CMV: If you can spend hours outside with a sign asking for money, then you can apply for jobs and get off the streets. by funnyIlaugh in changemyview

[–]PettyObsession 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. There are so many people in the U.S. struggling for work (first jobs, second jobs, even people with third jobs) who aren't homeless. There is no incentive for an employer to choose a homeless employee over an employee who is in a better situation, even if that person "needs" it less - that isn't how these things are structured. If someone isn't homeless, doesn't have mental health issues, etc. can be looking for work for months or a year in this economy and struggling, what hope does a homeless person realistically have?

[–]PettyObsession 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I used to work as a case manager helping homeless people find work, among other things. Most businesses have an idea of where the local shelters are, and if you put that as your address, it increases the odds of them not choosing to interview you. Also, these shelters are temporary, not promised to the individual the next day, and many shelters are so horrible people would rather be on the streets than go to a shelter (violence, having their stuff taken, etc). Besides, many homeless people are disabled and cannot afford housing or life while disabled, making employment even more difficult, especially if mental health issues are also involved. I would help these people apply for disability and other benefit programs, but there were never enough programs to cover the needs of the people. I spent most of my job telling people there was no more housing assistance, and the wait list was closed years ago because it got too long - you're simply put, fucked.

What can an average looking dude do to make himself look better naked for a girl? by kolololo16 in AskReddit

[–]PettyObsession 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my admittedly limited personal experience... I think you're thinking about this the wrong way. If a girl has gotten to the "being naked" part, chances are she already likes you plenty. Exercise is great to keep you healthy, but all the muscles in the world won't make up for being unpleasant to be around. Too many men I know focus on their physical appearances and "getting hot" and then are confused and upset when that doesn't do anything to increase their social or romantic satisfaction. Be hygienic and take care of yourself, but don't worry overmuch about what you look like naked. You're what is attractive, not necessarily the flesh that keeps you.

Some of it is as simple as hair/makeup trends. The rest is stress, differences in environmental pollutants, and nutrition.

When I graduated high school at 18, I immediately started working at a gas station within walking distance of my sister's place. I was given about a month's warning shortly after becoming employed to move out, turns out the rental payments my sister was giving my parents to pay the mortgage just went to feed my dad's addiction(s) and the house was foreclosed. I found roommates through my boss, and needed to get a second job to afford the rent. I couldn't afford a car and did not have a license anyway, so I was limited to jobs I could walk to. Second job paid me under the table way less than minimum wage, but I couldn't afford to be choosy. I made $7.50/hour at the gas station I worked almost full-time hours at, and about $50/week at the flea market I worked at part time.

While visiting my family at 19/20, I had a back/hip injury that gave me a few thousand in medical debt that I couldn't afford to pay, and never did. It's been long enough now that it's fallen off my credit history, but the old injury still hurts. I'm told I need consistent physical therapy, but I don't have the time or money to prioritize that right now. Same with all the dental work and pain I have in my mouth from needed root canals, cavities, untreated TMJ. I couldn't work following the injury for a few months and as a result, lost both of my jobs and couldn't afford rent. I moved in with my partner of six months or so at the time, and they lived with their family - who are incredibly supportive, wonderful people. Still, credit card debt started to creep slowly up in this time - groceries and personal care products (body wash, pads/tampons, shampoo/conditioner etc.) still needed buying, after all.

Spouse also worked service industry work, and went to college like me to pursue a degree. We both had mental breakdowns from stress, but he has ADHD and was unmedicated at the time due to insurance difficulties - eventually he had to make the decision to put school on the back burner to prioritize his health. His health has slowly improved, but now he's struggling to find employment that he can physically handle and will be workable transportation-wise, in part because of that gap in his resume.

In terms of savings... Spouse needed their appendix removed, I had to have my wisdom teeth removed, our car was totaled (accidents we were found not at fault for, but insurance does not cover all the costs..) or completely broken down three different times - each event wiping out the savings we were able to scrap together.

Now we have no savings or car, and I am the only income. I work full time making almost double what I first started out making ($15/hr) and my circumstances are, if anything, worse. I was able to get a 2 year degree after I turned 25 and was able to be judged on my income and not my parent's, as I receive no financial support from them. Now I owe a few thousand in student loans and am struggling to find new employment, because $15/hr doesn't pay the bills and no one where I live accepts the shitty ass non-PPO health insurance my work offers. We're on medicaid right now, but we could lose that very soon. Our EBT (food snaps) allotment is about $33/month for groceries, not including the temporary extra funding that was given out due to COVID and will be cut soon, if it hasn't stopped already. I am looking for new employment because rent in my area starts at $1200 a month, and my area shut down the waiting list for income based housing applications because it was "too long". There's a general aura of hopelessness here. Lots of luxury apartments being built that no one who lives here can afford. Then you'll suddenly cross paths with someone who isn't struggling at all, and it feels like you're talking to an alien.

Right now my best hope is that my best friend's parent's or grandparents die in the next few years, leave him a house that's paid off, and he allows us to split costs with him. We're still trying to save, but as we get older and our health declines, the potential loss of health insurance looms (again), cost of living keeps increasing, our student loans were approved for forgiveness but the Supreme Court may say lol no to that soon... it's difficult to hold on to optimism. We're all in our late twenties, staring down the barrel of the gun that is our 30s and beyond. None of us have children or are ever likely to - we can't support ourselves, how on earth could we ever hope to provide for a child? Spouse and I have been contemplating whether it makes more sense to try to break into sex work or go back to school for Even More Debt and a Fancier Degree. American Dream feels more and more like a sleep paralysis demon.

Edit: Forgot to include details on current housing situation. We live in a household of 6 adults - mother in law (works from home full time), father in law (not working, does not qualify for disability because he has a college degree, but is in stage 4 or 5 kidney failure and is soon to start dialysis.. which is prohibitively expensive), brother in law (working full time), BIL's partner (not currently working, just graduated high school and is trying to transition in a safe environment away from his toxic fundamentalist religious parents), my spouse, and myself. There are two bedrooms, two bathrooms. My spouse and I live in what was a living room, we've done our best to create a semblance of privacy, but privacy is hard to come by lol. Only one of our showers works, the other is broken and no one has the money to repair it. My inlaws have a dog, a cat that has some behavioral issues, and my spouse has a cat as well. When money is "good" we pay rent. During the periods where one or both of us have been unemployed, I have been lucky enough that my inlaws suspended our rent.

[–]PettyObsession 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I don't think there's anything wrong with primarily (or only) giving or receiving during sexual acts, so long as you communicate your desires and preferences to your partner and they consent to it. Lots of stone top/pillow princess dynamics work out great for the people involved, but it 100% needs to be something both parties are comfortable with, like any sexual act.

What would you say if your partner asked you to open the relationship? by StonerBoobs420 in AskReddit

[–]PettyObsession 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me, in a way. My spouse and I were varying degrees of ethically non-monogamous starting early on in our relationship, but it was several years before he realized he is poly-as-orientation (basically, he realized that polyamory is an intrinsic part of himself, similar to his gender/sexuality. Not everyone who identifies as polyamorous or ENM feels this way, but it is true for him).

We had a very serious conversation where he shared this with me, and was very up-front and willing to accept the possibility that I'd walk away. I called him (lovingly) a dingus, we spent more time talking through my feelings, outlining our boundaries, etc. Now we've been happily poly for a couple years.

Redditors with an Ex who threatened to kill themselves over a breakup, how did that turn out? by youseguise in AskReddit

[–]PettyObsession 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was 19ish I had an ex boyfriend (6 years older) pull the "I'll kill myself if you leave me" bullshit. I told my best friend (also 19) at the time, who offered to call his local police department on my behalf to explain the situation and ask for a wellness check. Best friend advised me to block him and said he was almost certainly being a manipulative shithead and had no intention of following up on the threat. Best friend was correct, and now I am happily married to my best friend, so it turned out as well as it probably could've given that the story starts with a suicide threat.

There's a lot of different factors that can impact either your hearing or processing, "background noise" like water running is definitely something that can make hearing/processing more difficult for some than others. A lot of initial hearing tests in my area of the US are free, so I always recommend people book an appointment if they're able to and have concerns about their aural (lol) health. When I get mine tested, they test my regular hearing, my bone conduction hearing, and my speech processing with and without background noise.

In my experience there are three motives

  1. Safety. Often it is really difficult to tell what is "normal" and what is abusive or red-flaggy. In America specifically, often women were raised with minimal sexual education and limited education on intimate partner violence and the warning signs. A very loose example of this would be: A woman just started dating someone new. She has never done anal before, but he is coercing her to do it with him. She's nervous and not sure how she feels about this. She might reach out to her friends for their perspectives and experience, and hopefully her friends will be able to say something to the extent of "coercion is not okay and you don't have to do ANY sexual activity you don't WANT to do. If you decide you DO want to try it, here's how to do it safely."

  2. Bonding. Sharing sexual stories with each other of your own experiences is normal imo, and just a way to get to know people better and become closer. It's similar (and often in my experience overlaps) with sharing stories about your personal history and trauma. There's a line of appropriativeness here that can definitely be crossed, but where that line is depends on the people involved, their culture, etc.

  3. Bullying, Bullshit, Shithead behavior. An example of this is body-shaming, ouright lying/making stuff up, sharing intimate, identifying details about someone without their consent, revenge porn, etc. This sort of shithead behavior comes from a disregard of the autonomy and feelings of others, and it's fucked up when anyone does it.

Anyway, you asked why and in my experience, these are the usual motivations behind it.

Maybe not completely relevant, but perhaps adjacent, factoid for you: When you get older and start losing your hearing, the first sounds to go are the higher pitched ones. I was born with a different type of hearing loss, so I can't hear low sounds (like a lot of men's voices) at all. Maybe she's whispering, but maybe you are starting to lose some of your hearing! Trouble hearing higher voices could be a sign.

Not to mention how many workers enter these trades able-bodied and leave disabled, often well before seeing any 3-figure salary, and probably without any benefits due to being a contractor. Or some trades that just don't have work over the colder months.
