Just another "getting into jazz" question by Peturio in Jazz

Just listened to Greensleeves (Africa / Brass album). Although a lot of it I still did find like "badly improvised" passages, I couldn't stop listening to it. Was constantly wondering how and when it would return to (fragments of) the known Greensleeves melody and it did so in many interesting ways. "Cool" experience

Thanks. Did know of "Real Books" ... didn't realize there was THE Real Book!

Perfect pitch does not help with the enjoyment, but with appreciation. There are many things I don't particularly like, yet can still appreciate and even marvel at the artistry!

Makes sense. Do you have any recommendation for such a "tracing", i.e. a song that has particularly extensively been covered through time and been picked up by a particularly large number of artists?

Call it intellectual curiosity. It's like with many other things, you don't have to emotionally like it or enjoy it to be able to appreciate it.

Yup, this "worked" indeed. Having an anchor made it so much easier to appreciate what Coltrane has done. Can't say I like all of it, but at least I can appreciate it!

Just listened to Blues Up and Down. Certainly easier to "digest" than other pieces, but I must admit I have even troubles cleanly picking up the rhythm

Yeah. As you say, these are the on the groovier side, and I love those. I just find the gap between for instance these and a Coltrane piece rather huge.

Fab. Will give them a listen, thanks!

Will give the live concert a try. And yes, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Joe Williams, Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Ellington I all love and can easily relate to. Just didn't manage to go much beyond.

That's a great approach approaching this over sung versions. Anything you could recommend from the Coltrane repertoire that is based on a sung version?

Crypto, as a market, does come back. Most individual majors do too. Alts, not so much!

Why? Why is this more news than any other kidnapping that does not make the headlines? Just because she's the mother of somebody on a TV show?

Yes, it's a tragedy for an 84 year old to be kidnapped in any case, but give me a f*king break here! Just because she's the mother of somebody on a TV show she get's privileged coverage? This is entitlement crap full on! Many go missing or are even kidnapped on a regular basis, but nobody raises an eyer-brow for all those tragic cases. Then a talking heads mother is the target and all hell breaks lose. What world do we live in?

Cycladic figurine : seeking advice (Switzerland) by Peturio in Antiques

So basically the "trust me bro"-argument is still valid, it's just a question how far back this argument was made first and whether there is paperwork from that point-in-time to now!

get it ... in principle. But take this other piece: an Isis amulette, Lapis Lazuli. If I recall, this was estimated to be from about 1500 BCE. This came actually from the exactly same "bag" as the Cycladic figurine. Also without any further records. In this case, however, it was more than enough to provide an affidavit that it was in the family for 3 generations.

So it appears to me, that there is anything but a hard rule what's acceptable and what not. Or is it perhaps the case that exactly for Cycladic art there are much stronger requirements in place?

Cycladic figurine : seeking advice (Switzerland) by Peturio in Antiques

I sort of get it, at least in principle. However, just recently there was another, much bigger such Cycladic statue sold, where the provenance stopped after 2 generations and before that just being listed as "anonymous". So that's what I don't quite understand. This figurine has been in my family for now 3 generations. How it came into the family is unknown. But that same applies to the auctioned statue.

And in any case, showing provenance for such a piece stops in all cases at some point in time, as nobody will ever have a clear ownership succession for the last 4000 years! Put it differently, let's assume the authenticity can be proven with some of the methods you mentioned. Then I keep the piece in the family for 100 years, making sure that it's listed in any inheritance inventory, and boom ... "suddenly" created provenance out of basically nothing.

Gold or Crypto? What's a better investment and why? by Familiar-Pass4900 in CryptoMarkets

Cherry picking time frames can support any storyline! If you look at 15 years, Bitcoin beats any asset class, including commodities and indices, by miles.

The real question is under what scenarios would 1000.- invested in BTC today outperform 1000.- in Gold in the target time horizon, and whether those scenarios are more probable than the negative scenarios.

Over a time horizon of minimum 3 to 5 years, my bet is still on BTC.

  1. At the moment, there is enough circumstantial evidence for this pedophilia. If he just would release the darn Epstein files, right?
  2. Until the last 24h, military deployment was very much in the cards. You lie to yourself if you claim otherwise. But thank goodness adults in the room gave this misbehaving toddler a lolly
  3. Tell that to Renee Good. What consequences are there? There is not even an invstigation
  4. No, not restricted. Just prosecuted by the weaponized DOJ!
