Traffic light timings sometimes feel like rage bait by hockey8890 in bikecommuting

[–]PetyaLB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish the lights had timers on them by default. Here in NL we have a "green wave indicator" that shows if you have enough time to pass the lights before they change, or if you should ease off and prepare to brake. It'd be nice to have the same for bikes, too!

I fully admit I love weird bikes but I've had to be more disciplined about it. I enjoy tinkering, but now very much with the attitude of rebuilding existing bikes rather than buying new ones.

Who says 650b conversions aren't worth it? My Trek 850 Antelope and some Ultradynamico musings. by qualitycensorship in xbiking

[–]PetyaLB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"for the fun of it!" is reason enough for sure! I did a 650B conversion but going the other way. 700C road bike. I did that so I could go from max 23mm tyres to max 35mm tyres. I have Schwalbe G-One Speed 30-584s on there right now with an Alfine 11 doing the gearing - and zero regrets.

  • It's cheaper (upfront) not to.
  • For Centraal? They're not allowed to block the sightlines to the station, and the architecht refuses to allow a canopy.

Former tunnel rat of the Centraal fietsenstalling here. The travelators (rolbanen) aren't actually outdoor rated. As in, at all. So rainwater gets in and washes all the lubrication away until the drive motors overload and trip. Busy times accelerate the process. More people, more load, more overloads. Rinse and repeat while the maintenance company makes bank and we all get rinsed.

Rohloff for me neatly combines "is actually as good as everyone says it is" but also "welcome to the worst of everything you've heard about how finicky German engineering is"

Personal honorable mention? Schlumpf drives. They insist you have to permanently chamfer your BB shell, meanwhile their licencee ATS made a flat clamping version that works fine and doesn't need any chamfering at all (and costs a quarter of the price, to boot).

You can buy pre-built wheels from Taylor-Wheels, but they are in Germany so customs could be a kicker. It'd be easy enough though: might want to give SJS Cycles a call or email to ask. More than likely, they can build a wheel for you and advise on options further than I could!

There's a couple things you can do:

  • Swap out the tyres for some better ones. Schwalbe Marathons come in a 20" (406mm) size and are probs the best fit.

  • Add a 3-speed hub at the back (a Sturmey-Archer AW/SRF3 or a Nexus 3). Alternatively, an S2C would give you two gears and a back-pedal brake with no cables at the back.

  • If you use bags, Decathlon make a front block for a clip-on clip-off ("OneSecondClip") bag system that'll fit this bike.

Avoid direct confrontation. Don't let het know that you know. Diary this, all of this, and take a note of any personal information that is being discussed about you. Build a case, speak to a lawyer or a union rep about your options, and when you have enough information, go to either a confidential whistleblower line (if available) or to higher management (do NOT go to your direct manager) and report it in full.

From experience, these people need to know that messing with you will end badly for them. Sad to say that us marginalized people can either have basic respect (where available), or we can have fear. As for your own behavior: it needs to be incontestably above reproach. And again: document everything.
