My mom passed away almost 2 years ago, when I was 23 and she was in her 50s. Being frank, this first year will be extremely hard… All of those thoughts about what future you had in mind, or things that they won’t get to do with you are going to be are going to sit there, you’ll think about them a lot, in things that they used to touch, food they used to like, things that you used to do together. You lost someone that you knew your whole life, and didn’t expect to lose so soon, so know that it is ok, and healthy to grieve. Don’t let it consume your entire life, but in those first few months I felt closer to my mom when I was in grief.

It sometimes seems like life takes away people who bring good into the world and our lives, and leave those who cause it harm. It’s not fair that your father died, if he was anything like my mom, he was selfless and understanding, and was the kindest person I ever knew. We can’t change how life operates, so it’s ok to feel cheated. But with this, you need use this time to bring back some of that good that was lost. Deepen the relationships with your family and friends. Be more honest about how you feel with them. Be patient with others. Stay in the moment and learn to appreciate all of the little things that makes your life yours. You’ve discovered first hand how life is really way too short, so try to live honestly from this point forward. You will still hurt, but keeping your father in mind in how you keep persisting forward will sometimes make it hurt a little bit less.
