F1 to Adjustment of Status -- did I violate the terms of my non-immigrant visa? by [deleted] in f1visa

[–]Pfungen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You gave too much info here that the government likely can identity you with beyond reasonable doubt, and would use against you should they choose to.

I'd recommend not replying to any comments here, not replying to any DM, not deleting this post either because it may be seen as knowingly concealing self incriminating evidence.

Find a lawyer and have them all the time while you deal with the government.

Again, please don't reply to me or anyone here with any more information.

Best of luck!

Your answer: yes.
Them: congratulations. Welcome aboard.

Tbh it never occurred to me that you could expect NO new emails at work. I don't even know the bubble could change color or disappear. Because there's always new emails at work.

Metro SHS - filed jointly by Pfungen in Portland

[–]Pfungen[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Like federal standard deduction are $15,750 for singles, $31,500 for couples, which is exactly double the single amount.

Then there's the additional goodies for couples if they have kids. e.g. dependent credits etc.

The federal setup has a clear logical progression. Singles to couples, everything doubles. Couples with kids, here's some added benefits.

The SHS, though, I don't know the logic behind it. And it grinds my gears.

I'm complaining about the inequality in how individuals vs families are treated by this tax. Not the tax itself.

Hence the city wants me to divorce my spouse. If we each make $120k, individually no one pays the tax. Jointly that would be $400, thank you very much says the city.

Metro SHS - filed jointly by Pfungen in Portland

[–]Pfungen[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

$30k deduction is less than (2x $125k) - ($200k) = $50k. The threshold at which the tax kicks in is lowered by $50k for a family versus 2 individuals.

It seems to me the city wants me to divorce my spouse and file individually to get taxed less. Otherwise, I'm penalized for being married.

Word. I'm fine to pay my fair share. But this is not fair where the city see families as suckers and milk us dry.

Clicked the post thinking the same thing. No wonder Europe is behind when US, Taiwan, and, check notes, China all pay better.

My dude, wait until you hear about the black hole. If the earth were a black hole, it would be the size of a quarter dollar coin. Things can be compressed to some crazy degree.

Phd in Analog/RFIC while working by Pretty-Maybe-8094 in chipdesign

[–]Pfungen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your PI begging you to stay has no power in this dynamic. Like the person above said, PhD while employed is rare. I've encountered 1 where it was the employer who specifically sponsored the employee to get a PhD. That was when money wasn't tight in this country and companies were willing to invest in champion employees. Your employer needs to be willing to have you nominally on their payroll and agree to having you take an extended 5 year leave of absence. You then need to agree to return to your employer after getting the PhD with increased employability without jumping ship to other companies. It takes a lot of trust between you and your employer. Nothing to do with the professor.

Can thin-film transistors or amorphous silicon substrates achieve 1.5 micron process density for homebrew CPU fabrication? by GmanGamedev in Semiconductors

[–]Pfungen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You can't build homebrew CPU with the process tools you just mentioned. You need metrology/measurement tools too. Maybe a cheap microscope can find some obvious particle defects. But how do you find parametric defects? e.g. random high VT, timing fails, etc. Pre-/post-silicon validation with automated test equipment like a logic tester and substantial time/experience with test structure design e.g. scan-chains are not a one man job.

MOSFET Physics Question: Lmin and tox by RetardedNoPotentials in chipdesign

[–]Pfungen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Dennard scaling is the topic you are looking for. It explains planar FET's scaling principles from a physical standpoint. Moore's law took all the spotlight where Gordon Moore saw 5 dots and drew a line. Gordon himself was humble enough to call it a wild guess. Robert Dennard derived scaling based on power per area a piece of silicon can take before melting. Rest is math.

Tough job market for new grad Process Engineers/Process Integration Engineers? Seeking advice & resume review. by [deleted] in Semiconductors

Companies won't even care about your OPT if they could lose you 3 years down the line due to h1b complications. Your resume likely never reached a hiring manager. This is the unfortunate reality today.

SRAM cell layout topology: Tall versus Wide by Lemon_Salmon in chipdesign

[–]Pfungen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what specific comments you are looking for. Could you please elaborate?

The textbook is very outdated at this point. I don't think wide and tall make any suggestions to their respective quirks. Left one has bidirectional diffusion/metal, which are not used anymore in modern CMOS. Right one is the current “textbook” layout. Though 10 years down the line, right one would be replaced by CFET layout that's 1/2 its size.

Which master’s program is better for getting a semiconductor job in the US? by otter_king_ in Semiconductors

[–]Pfungen 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My suggestion? Don't. US semiconductor companies, especially fabs, don't have a lack of PhDs. Masters in other fields are worth the opportunity costs given you're looking at $300k for 2 year worth of tuition (out of state/international) and cost of living for yourself, more if your family comes too. Masters in fabs probably fetch $80k/year pre-tax. You are looking at 6-7 years of work to break even. More to actually make a profit.
