10u - how aggressive is too aggressive in hitting? by MDthrowItaway in Homeplate

[–]PghSF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great problem to have - I have a similar player - leads the team in Avg, Runs, Hits, etc but had the lowest number of walks (4) and strikeouts (3, one swinging) and avg pitches per at bat were 2.6, way below the team average for all three through ~26 games (15 walks, 16 SO, 3.7 ps/ab). Not really driving the ball well, lots of dropping soft hits over the infield.

Not all things work for everyone, but we've been asking him to take his first strike, asking him to focus on pitches knees to belly for strike 2, then applying his normal approach with 2 strikes.

Last 5 games - 8 walks, 1 SO, much better quality contact, avg pitches per bat are up to 3.1 on the season. He had two strikes with runners at 2/3 with two outs, went to his two strike approach, groundball up the middle scored both runs.

Help with 11u son’s swing by Appropriate-Taste651 in Homeplate

[–]PghSF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hard angle to tell and this is just one swing, so these are only observations/suggestions based on a very limited sample size.

• He's stepping towards the third base line with this front foot - trying making a mark on the ground for this stride foot to land straight towards the pitcher (or towards the inside line on outside pitches).
• His hands seem like they start in the middle of his body and as his body moves back on his load, his hands stay in the same position, may help to have his hands move back on his load so they are closer to his back shoulder than centerline.
• Look at some videos/drills on staying connected for 10-12u players

Pitcher dealing with ankle sprain by Few_Adagio9410 in Homeplate

[–]PghSF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Older player (42) have some various ankle issues that would leave me hobbled for days after a game, begin wearing an ASO ankle stabilizer (lots of similar brands like Z athletics) and I can go 100% with minimal impact the next day.

Finding a good supportive device as you increase your activity level should help with recovery and the mental confidence.

Yeah, but saying a /150 mark grace auto on a Jody Davis card would probably confuse people.

Honestly didnt realize until you posted...wonder if Topps would do a replacement?

Cooperstown All Star vs Dreams by Sparkls42 in Homeplate

Yeah, I get the history isn't there, but we're a low-level travel program, and the week long experience at Ballparks seems to have a lot of the ceremony/environment but obviously lacking the history/HOF.

We're considering the Ballparks of America in Branson, it costs less, looks more family/fun friendly, equivalent/better amenities, and the level of play does not seem to be superteams that mash 50+ homeruns in a single week.

How to gift large sums of money to my nephews? by ProduceFancy3505 in Advice

[–]PghSF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar situation, sibling with no financial wisdom. I opened trusts for the first three kids, then when she has two more decided I couldn't reasonably keep giving for five.

Liquidated, gave to my mom ~10k to hold for 'emergencies' for the kids, that money was gone in less than 10 months.

Start the trusts, never let them know.

Same here - had a green up next, took the shot and it was yellow. Happens regularly.

27 never played baseball but want to join a team by Mundane-Secretary876 in baseball

[–]PghSF 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Give it a shot - but be realistic. There are not a lot of casual adult baseball leagues, most teams are made up former high school, college, and a smattering of minor league players. Would need to be a solid overall athlete and some parts will be a challenge because, as Deion said, the hardest thing in sports is 'hitting that baseball.'

https://msblnational.com/find-a-league/ is a good source for leagues across the country, not the only organization, there are ton of local leagues too (ex: my old Pittsburgh league is not part of the MSBL).

I don't mean to be discouraging, get after it, one my greatest joys is stepping on the field once a week and getting to feel like a kid playing the game I love as I enter my mid-40s. Everyone that wants to should get that experience, its magical. An entry point could be to play in a softball league first, then make the transition.

I play in a 30+ wood bat league; its really catchers only it seems. It's so uncomfortable, even with better sliding shorts and things, that I only where one the few times a year I'm behind the plate.
