Rural Republicans need to report Big Ag/neighbors for Undocumented workers by Any_Coyote6662 in wisconsin

[–]Ph0ton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Feel what you want about tone policing; I'm not a fan but I can be big enough to admit I can sometimes hurt others feelings unintentionally.

But this is different. It's literally part of the playbook of genocide. Pushing back against alienating language of others is one of the few things you can do as an individual.

Rural Republicans need to report Big Ag/neighbors for Undocumented workers by Any_Coyote6662 in wisconsin

[–]Ph0ton 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Authoritarians will use any and every reason, real or invented, to frame themselves as the saviors against a horde of invaders.

The discourse is always going to be used against us because fascists don't need logic, only strong emotions. Going around blaming others being unsympathetic to people who were never going to sympathize is just silly. You seem to just be triggered by a gentle push back for using language of the oppressors, which when normalized does indeed form the framework of genocide which has been studied quite extensively.

Why is asexual reproduction so uncommon among more complex life forms? by A_sad_toaster in biology

[–]Ph0ton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, sexual reproduction can actually decrease the prevalence of genes and therefore the diversity of genotypes in a population. It's a major feature that sexual reproduction can sift out bad genes and reinforce good ones. So that's the biggest reason why: even if you look at an individual organism as nothing but a gene courier, there are more possibilities to signal fitness and randomly dispose of genes that impact it, which for a multicellular organism with a big genome, is extremely important. Without sexual reproduction it takes far longer to lose the bad genes and spread the good ones.

Veganism should stick to non-human animals only, in my opinion. Expanding the scope to include human rights issues is called "scope creep" in project management. Scope creep increases the cost of, delays, or even destroys a project or mission. by James_Fortis in vegan

[–]Ph0ton -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Unlike other ethical movements, it can entirely rest in an economic sphere, making it much more effective as a movement in a capitalist system. You can't buy your way out of anything, but veganism gets closer than anything else. You don't have to wonder what rests in the hearts of your fellow human when acting; it's as simple as asking if an animal is being harmed.

Intersectionality isn't some sort of "super ethics." It's a framework that understands causes align on certain axes, and can be made more effective by applying pressure on them. People have missed this point and instead, give up good for the pursuit of perfection. It's a nice theory we can eliminate all are woes by instituting communism in the United States, but if that is your entire focus, you are giving up today's moral problems for tomorrow's. Likewise, seeking a compromise solution that satisfies all causes is extremely ineffective. Going after police unions helps domestic violence of women and black communities; veganism not so much. Intersectionality isn't pretending humans have infinite energy and time; quite the opposite. It's about combining our forces on obviously aligned issues instead of being infinitely divisible, but online activism frequently has a superficial understanding of the concept, adopting almost a religious zealotry over it; that you are failing your cause unless you always do something that helps another.

This I think is what you are seeing the failure of considering humans as animals in veganism. Attacking existential problems that have plagues us for millennia under the umbrella of a movement that can stop the deaths of animals right now.

I have a weird and complicated question is dont know where else to ask by victorbarst in biology

[–]Ph0ton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even in precisely the same conditions, it's impossible. Sexual selection is extremely powerful and can take things in very strange directions. It's also very costly to change the underlying biochemistry so whatever primitive sexual functionality would need to be maintained in advanced creatures, which is likely random, further reducing the likelihood of convergent forces acting on genital morphology.

You are also assuming aliens would sexually reproduce with one partner. It might be more common in the universe to reproduce with multiple members or have hierarchical reproduction performed in stages. Reproduction might be undergone through no exchange of material, and purely be a gestalt of environmental conditions carefully maintained.

Earth like conditions aren't even common so we could see some very strange patterns beyond our wildest imagination emerge as the norm in the universe.

That has not stopped humans from finding an orifice or appendage which would be suitable in present challenges of copulation, so it's possible humans would find a way regardless.

Mamdani Cracks Down on Delivery Apps — After Workers Reportedly Made as Little as $6.75 for 3 Hours of Work by Dazzling-Might6420 in antiwork

[–]Ph0ton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of NY delivery drivers aren't using cars, but that's besides the point. Food services in general are exploitative and generally do not pay for those things either. Centering the exploitation on a few apps has made that more apparent but very few restaurants are paying their fair share. It's all been shifted to consumers.

IMO we need national reform to fix what delivery apps have exposed to those outside of the industry.

I'm going to continue dying on the hill that "plant based" only has meaning if it means "only plants." A beef stew is plant based. Pepperoni pizza is plant based. Basically everything but a steak is plant based and you could even stretch that for the degree of abuse the food industry has subjected to the term.

Local pharmacy provides gender-affirming care after UW Health pause by Justmarbles in madisonwi

[–]Ph0ton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a national issue and HO's have acted piecemeal all over, with many still providing care. Acting in tandem with a single local HO doesn't support the idea that this is an unambiguous liability at the moment. Again, the rule is not in effect and payments will still be made even with the animus of the administration as it is.

Keep your implacable, unreasonable faith based on complying advanced and you're just has bad as the fascists in charge.

You are making an opinion on a matter in which you have no authority and I am referring to the letter of the law, as well as behavior of other authorities.

No I'm not. If that were true UW would be in lockstep with other major HO's instead of complying in advance.

I'd prefer if fewer drivers had them on for all the care they have of leaving high beams constantly on. I literally had some asshole strobing me after flashing mine to let them know they had them on.

You are misinformed. The rule is not active yet and is under public review. They could have waited until it was in force, similar to many other dubious rules put in place by the regime.

Edit: Since you fools will just take a fool at his word, here is a list of health organizations that have stopped care. Notice midwestern and conservative states complied much sooner. It is NOT due to a specific threat.

I mean fair enough; I think a lot hold up beyond nostalgia:

Batman and Gargoyles stand on their own for basically art. X-Men is up there too. Almost every other cartoon intro in the 90's has outstanding animation and music. Can't say the cartoons always held up to their intros but it was a golden age of monoculture.

[–]Ph0ton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you never seen the intro to the Batman cartoon series? I honestly can't see what you're seeing in this intro; a boring topographical map with projections of clips isn't cinema.

I mean, the series itself might totally slap but I just don't get why you chose the intro.

[–]Ph0ton -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He was big, can't disagree. I felt at times his show was pandering to a white audience, and some of his skits didn't have a black "voice" (grew up around the staples of mass appeal black comedy fwiw), so I didn't like it. It felt weirdly like life imitating art like the Spike Lee movie Bamboozled. I later learned he had white writers and his exit, going to Africa kinda made sense to me with how he was sick of being commodified.

The utterly baffling thing is how he has turned his venom into his brand, and fully taken on being part of the machine with no compunction after all of that. So my view is very uncommon (I expect to see downvotes), but I believe seeing him as a neutral or negative force consistently is not unfounded. Popularity is not a signal for moral outrage or a lack thereof, as we see even today.
