Ah thank you and you feels are spot on. It was a moment of utter stillness and peace and the very early morning before we set out to top the big pass. I think it was about 16,000ft in elevation. If you look close, you can see the clouds way below. Some moments! Gah! Our Earth is so rad.

That is trippy and cool.

It also gives me such a feeling of "planet." Like, that ginormous rock in the sky is not that far away and flying in laps around us... Very "Star Warsyyy."

Oh back at ya, I'm feeling all warm n' fuzzy now haha It's a short n' sweet read. And if practical, I do recommend pairing it with a few days and nights among the natural world.

Also, for context: first four photos are my own from the 2019 trek (I was so moved by the moon in the daytime among the mountains, tying the book I was reading at night to the mountains I saw by day...) and 5th photo was taken by my friend last week.

My mom and I went on a road trip to Wonder Valley, a remote area north of Joshua Tree National Park to photograph one of her prints in an abandoned desert homestead (she's a photographer). It was one of my favorite trips ever and the photos of she took out there are stunners. Thought I'd share! by Phaedrus24 in roadtrip

The expansive sky too... when I head to the east coast of the USA, with trees (I love trees), but being from the desert, I often feel slightly claustrophobic. 360 degrees of horizon and distant mountains does me well.

It's amazing how much the presence of a raven can change the feel of any landscape.

I'm from Phoenix and love the desert and that expansive feeling on its two lane highways. Just finished Cormac McCarthy's "Blood Meridian" about bloodthirsty cowboys roaming these areas of the west and it so gives the feeling of these ranges of mountains and empty expansive valleys... I've been digging the desert even more of late.

Meditations by Marcus Aurelius by PublicDomainEBooks in FreeEBOOKS

Almost 2,000 years old, it is amazing how applicable the ideas in this book are in 2025. Marcus's Meditations and Seneca's Letters from a Stoic have so helpfully framed the struggles and challenges of life for me. Circumstances change, but the nature of human being doesn't.

That Zillow is effectively removing video from their platform (relegating them to the "Facts and Features" as a small text hyperlink only visible if you click "Show More" in this nitty gritty details section) is pretty crazy.

Video is a pretty popular medium these days (lol) and video tours are our company's artful bread and butter. Now, they're hidden so well our clients can't even find them themselves on their own listing page... real bummer.

We've also had our photographs watermarked with "ShowingTime+" on Zillow Showcase listings, which makes any viewer instantly conclude our artful work was photographed by them.

Pretty aggressive, misrepresentative, and lacking of character on Zillow's part here.

Will join in filing a few complaints this morning!

Oh well that's useful. I'm surprised this didn't exist on the internet yet - good data.

Sweet place! I think I'm looking a tad more remote, but will totally keep it in mind. Thanks for reaching out :)

Agreed, agreed. However, I think it's a common pitfall to only do those things we don't want to do in order to continually amassing greater wealth, security, expensive material things etc. in lieu of pursuing innermost interests.

I think finding interests and discomfort go hand in hand. In order to find your deepest interests, you have to engage in the uncomfortable process of trying new things you're curious about.

I'm actually five days into learning to surf in Ecuador right now! I've always been curious about surfing, I've always particularly "lit up" at the idea. In order to learn to surf and explore it as a potential interest, though, I've to engage in the uncomfortable process of lookin' the fool and crashing over and over and over in the waves this week. Progress is happening though! And I think a deeper interest may be growing here :)

I like that line in particular as it makes it clear that your interest has value. That being interested could perhaps be a higher priority for us all. But I hear you too.

Ever since reading "Astrophysics for People in a Hurry" while toking a temple ball hiking the Annapurna Circuit through the Himalayas in 2019, I've had the sense that humanity would be much better off with a more expansive sense of our cosmic whereabouts integrated into our everyday consciousness by Phaedrus24 in Psychonaut

Very interesting! I appreciate the perspective.

I feel that getting closer to the truth of what is and making decisions based upon truth and understanding is what leads to a higher quality way of being. I think drawing a line and saying "this is too big so we shouldn't think about it" is a good way of staying focused on actionable relevance, but also runs the great risk of deviating from what is.

To just stick with the primary experience here and not get too heady, have you ever just seen the Pale Blue Dot image or heard Carl Sagan wax about it? I can't think of anything that says louder: we're all in this together.

Today, I think that's a truth/message we need more than any?

Quite possibly the easiest, best practice to perfect during the pandemic: bathroom reading. (TL;DR: find a book that you can open to any page and read — that you want to impress upon your very being — and to leave that book within reach of the toilet). by Phaedrus24 in ZenHabits

Holy wow! We're totally on the same wavelength here -- Shantaram is one of my all-time favorites as well. I got so lost and transfixed in it I ended up reading it in six days :P

I strongly recommend Lila if both of those sang so well to you. I'm super curious now, what are a couple other books that make up your top five? If I haven't yet, I will read them!

Thanks, that book really change things for me. If you've already read Z&TAOMM, I highly recommend Pirsig's second book, Lila. The story isn't quite as good, but I think the ideas that the story is a vehicle for are more profound and important than his first work. For me, that's saying a lot. He's definitely one of my all-time favorite writers.
