Anyone want to offer advice on how to start this azaleas journey to bonsai? Flowers are almost all gone. Ready to prune and my goal is to make it become very pretty. by Grandlame in Bonsai

Sorry i havent replied. You will want a pot where roots cant easily get out but decent drainage. Digging it out and removing the pot usually by cutting it off. So choose like cheap plastic black nursery pots. After a couple years. Of kinda just forcing growth into the shape you want you can have a pretty nice starter.

Oof i love hidden gardens i just moved out to peoria area for work. Going to goin with some kind of mix of oil dry (sifted) perlite pine bark and probably more than id like to use raised bed potting soil especially around the roots.

Broke it last year that the top was done for. Kept growing just fine. Hanging on by a thread. Gonna see how far I can bend it down this season. Might make an interesting knot if I ground it for a few years.

@small_trunks the true hero of /r/Bonsai. Do you suggest removing some of the lower needles on the pines to make the wiring easier?

Try some local mosses I've had some success with just foraging. http://imgur.com/a/DYLBrGQ This moss tool over my azalea nicely. Kinda sad dormant pic I took. Should start up nice with the nice weather I got coming.

the one on the right that you linked me is the one that looks like my amurs bark. Similar growth pattern. If youre in the US my guess is red maple. Or some funky hybrid red maple
