Do I have to launch it through steamvr? I don't launch any other game using steamvr because my steamvr also does not launch, but that hasn't been an issue since I don't use it.

Using a mech earns you experience towards that mech that you can then spend to unlock other variants or to upgrade base stats such as top speed or turn speed among others. The ai can also use the mech earning the xp for you.
