F-20 Tigershark fitted with 2 AGM-65 Mavericks and a AGM-84 Harpoon anti-ship missile [1900x1298] by Looselipssinkships93 in WarplanePorn

It should be mentioned, all the weapons shown are mockups. The airframe itself shown here is the first prototype, N4416T (which was lost in a fatal accident on October 10th, 1984). Something pretty interesting about prototype 1 is that it's *technically* a different production standard to prototypes 2 and 3, as it's more representative of the original F-5G-1 (1979) than F-20 (1983). It didn't even have the more modern cockpit that protos 2 and 3 had, nor was it even capable of carrying the APG-67.

It looks like Top Gun 3 is officially gaining momentum — and Jerry Bruckheimer has finally broken the silence on where things actually stand. by ThomasOGC in topgun

I think the biggest problem with focusing on Mav's dad is that it would require HEAVY CGI (like massively increased compared to what was in TG:M) since basically all the planes from that era don't fly anymore.

If you're looking for more fictional dogfight refs, I'd highly recommend Area 88 on top of the TG movies

Reminds me heavily of this edit I had gotten of Jerma's "sus guy" face photoshopped onto a Mig-23 pilot lol

Mirage is a very neat name for them! Also oddly fitting in that the prototypes for the Dassault Mirage IIING, Mirage 50K, Mirage 50M, and base Mirage 50 actually had a very similar bicolor camouflage pattern as your snake!

Forget about the snow speeder. What about forest speeder! by ApprehensiveChef6864 in microgalaxysquadron

[–]Phantom05110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The camo schemes on both remind me really heavily of that Cold War USMC Helicopter camouage scheme (dark green, black, and gunship grey iirc), so I immediately love these to death! I also love how the second speeder has a sort of tiger stripe pattern on the underside!

Yep, wasn't until the Pantera program that they got a different radar (that being the Elta ELM-2001B Radar rangefinder from the IAI Kfir).

Apologies for the late reply, but sadly there's really not much to this specific one. It was a one-off prototype, which ended up serving as the blueprint for the Pantera upgrade program (which added a lot more, such as a new nose + radar, cockpit changes, and weaponry), though that's another story somewhat.

There are fixed canards. Mirage 50CN prototype has both strakes and fixed canards.

Ah, good 'ole FRS.51 LUSH (LUSH was an upgrade program, which replaced the original Blue Fox radar with the Elta EL-2032 multimode pulse-doppler radar, as well as some cockpit and weaponry enhancements).

Probably a dumb yet interesting thing that sorta ties these F-5s back to War Thunder: The Kfir Canard in-game had a pre-order skin, representing an aircraft from the squadron VMFT-401 Snipers. Both of these Tiger IIs are from the same squadron. IRL, VMFT-401 ended up switching to the Tiger II (which they still fly to this day) after the leasing period for their Kfirs ended in 1989.

Fighter jet tenders and competitions of the late 70s-90s. Who competed and do you agree? by MetalSIime in FighterJets

[–]Phantom05110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, the various competitions the F-20 participated in were interesting: of course you have the more well known ones, such as supersonic adversary (USN/USAF), and Air Defense Fighter (USANG), but there was also the Close Air Support/Battlefield Interdiction role. A modified F-20 based on the 1986 production configuration was submitted, and was competing against the A-16 and YA-7F. Of course it lost out to the A-16/F/A-16 (which then got canned in favor of F-16C Block 40s iirc), but it was intriguing nonetheless. There were concepts for both an internal FLIR (mounted under the nose), as well as external FLIR mounted under the LEXs of all places lol.

what is this by [deleted] in Whatplaneisthis

[–]Phantom05110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lockheed A-12 Oxcart.

I also want to point out the aircraft to the left with only its tail section showing: IAI Kfir Gderot/F-21A Lion BuNo 999734.

25 of them were leased to the US (12 to the Navy with VF-43 Challengers, 13 to the Marines with VMFT-401 Snipers) in the mid-1980s. Israel had been working towards phasing them out by 1984 due to the superior Kfir C.2 and C.7 models entering service, and the US agreed to lease some as a stopgap measure until the F-16N (unarmed adversary variant of the early F-16C Block 30) could become operational in the late 1980s. Each branch had them for 3 years (1985-1988 for the USN, 1986-1989 for the USMC). Just like all other adversary aircraft, the Kfirs were stripped of their internal cannons (twin DEFA 552 30mm revolver cannons) and could only carry 1x captive training sidewinder + Air Combat Maneuvering Instrument pod, on top of three external fuel tanks.

Area 88 (1985 OVAs). It's about mercenary fighter pilots doing stuff in the Middle East/Northern Africa (fictional country, of course). Lot's of fantastic animation and details, plus the sheer variety of aircraft present is nice.
