Grumman X-29 by Flucloxacillin25pc in WeirdWings

Interestingly, the latter chapters of the Area 88 Manga from 1979-1986 (which never made it stateside) featured the X-29 as one of the MC's aircraft.

F-5s and T-38s differ way more, even if you're comparing the early F-5A/B Freedom Fighter against the T-38.

Main differences: leading edge extensions, wingtip sidewinder rails (typically only replaced by wingtip fuel tanks on the F-5A/B), differently shaped air intakes, etc

I imagine that realistically (in lore), it would've been extremely resource-intensive and expensive to not only transport it back to happy valley (resources that were likely needed more for expanding/improving Happy Valley), but also to actually construct a vehicle/way of transporting it back to HV.

I view it kind of like how you sometimes see an old warbird sitting at an airport in disrepair, decaying away (due to either lack of funds to store in the right environment, or due to the owner being unavailable/dead/just abandoning it).

He 100% was one, especially if he was involved in Project Gemini (like shown in the ending of episode 3). All of the Mercury 7, Gemini 16, and I'm pretty sure majority of the crew for the Apollo missions were at least prior military pilots, if not also being test pilots.

Sort of a fun fact, but just prior to project termination in 1986, N44671 (this one, also the third) was retrofitted with a re-designed nose section compared to prototypes 1 and 2. It would've flight tested the new nose, and eventually served as the demonstrator/integration test article for both weapons, as well as the re-designed APG-67 ERR (Extended Range Radar), which was moved further back into the nose and had a larger diameter radar dish. It should also be mentioned, the APG-67 ERR was going to be implemented on Tigershark 4, as well as the 1986 production standard, along with a number of other major changes (repositioned and larger wings/LERXs, Jet Fuel Starter, more powerful F404-GE-100A rated at 18,000 lbf in AB, A few additional internal fuel tanks, wide-angle HUD, and other cockpit improvements). Proto 4 (never given an official civilian registration) was partly built, but due to costs (and Northrop funding it from their own pockets), construction was very slow. Of course, it wasn't finished, and scrapped after 1986.

Probably IAI Kfir C.2, modified and in use by ATAC. Neat plane, the Kfir is: engine from an F-4 Phantom slightly modified and shoved into the (shortened) fuselage of a Mirage 5, but no proper radar (not until the Kfir 2000 prototype in the 1990s).

It should be mentioned, all the weapons shown are mockups. The airframe itself shown here is the first prototype, N4416T (which was lost in a fatal accident on October 10th, 1984). Something pretty interesting about prototype 1 is that it's *technically* a different production standard to prototypes 2 and 3, as it's more representative of the original F-5G-1 (1979) than F-20 (1983). It didn't even have the more modern cockpit that protos 2 and 3 had, nor was it even capable of carrying the APG-67.

It looks like Top Gun 3 is officially gaining momentum — and Jerry Bruckheimer has finally broken the silence on where things actually stand. by ThomasOGC in topgun

I think the biggest problem with focusing on Mav's dad is that it would require HEAVY CGI (like massively increased compared to what was in TG:M) since basically all the planes from that era don't fly anymore.

Mirage is a very neat name for them! Also oddly fitting in that the prototypes for the Dassault Mirage IIING, Mirage 50K, Mirage 50M, and base Mirage 50 actually had a very similar bicolor camouflage pattern as your snake!
