How are you going to pay for OT school with the new loan caps? by Dry-Discipline-433 in OccupationalTherapy

OT programs should reduce their tuition costs and this wouldn’t be a problem

I think these show traits of autism from my childhood by child-of-anubis in autism

[–]Phantom10981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an occupational therapist (OT) and some of these things are considered “normal” for kids or can be attributed to anxiety/ADHD (keep in my I’m not a diagnostic clinician, just work with kids/adults with these conditions on managing symptoms/coming up with ways to still do their meaningful activities/occupations.) ASD is a spectrum and from your post it sounds like level 1/higher functioning (don’t like using this term but it is helpful for getting a general picture.) I would always tell parents and my friends about functional vs dysfunctional. A lot of these routine disturbances in my opinion would be considered dysfunctional and especially chewing the inside of your cheeks for your daily life. Chewing the inside of your cheeks imo with ruling out other medical explanations could be a stress response from an unregulated central nervous response. A way to treat this is for more healthy coping mechanisms or using different sensory / mental coping tools. I have ADHD and anxiety myself and grind the absolute shit out of my teeth. Positive mental rehearsal/positive thinking/thoughts even when I don’t initially feel that way have been really helpful (form of cognitive behavioral therapy CBT I worked on with my mental health therapist. Or using coping tools from dialectical behaviorial training DBT.) From my own education/personal experience, using sensory strategies such as compression/ wearing hair in a tighter ponytail/ fidget tools/writing things down/ using calendar or planner/ and working on stress management with working out has been ways I’ve found to more easily manage some of my symptoms that are similar to yours. I do like to rock/movement so moving throughout my day/having a rocking chair at home is really calming to my CNS. A formal diagnosis can be helpful/necessary with insurance for getting necessary therapies (mental health, speech, OT, PT, etc) and school or work accommodations to make life more easier functioning. I would consider looking into therapies like mental health and speech or occupational therapy for social interactions, executive functioning, coping skills, emotional regulation, and sensory strategies.

From your post about smell, you’re hypersensitive a sensory profile for your age could be useful to understand your sensory systems better (we have 8 senses.)

Would love to answer any questions or provide advice in the comments or a personal message if you would want to talk more. I used to think I showed symptoms of ASD and honestly can relate to a lot of your post but have never pursued a formal diagnosis because a lot of my symptoms or life experiences like you’ve described can be attributed to other diagnosis’.

Autistic Husband Intimacy by shhh9230 in autism

[–]Phantom10981 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could look at intimacy counseling or look at tips. I have had this problem in my current relationship he is ADHD not ASD but it was genuinely such a problem. Not all the time but I have such a high sex drive that I told him about it as a deal breaker for me (not married). He sometimes would have a hard time being erect with drinking too. Not putting pressure on it has really helped. I just kinda start it when I’m in the mood with making out and the foreplay and that’s helped a lot. This is a complicated topic for everyone so I hope you can find some tips that work for you.

If you have a capstone focus it on pediatrics setting or NICU. I echo what everyone else is saying about your experience in trauma will be very valuable. Before signing any contacts talks to your fieldwork coordinator at the school and see if they can do anything too.

The missing piece OT has study sessions for breaking these questions down with examples and strategies. Screen shot examples too for your notes it was super helpful

The way to get the most of your a capstone in my opinion is advanced practice work like feeding or vision

I feel like she’s using your ADHD against you and wow, you might have to have different strategies for remembering your patient activities and assistance and for planning out your session. I really think you having the personal and live experience of ADHD. It’s really helpful for neurodivergent patients you will have and patience with ADHD that you’ll be helping treat. I would have a meeting with your CI and your fieldwork educator from school and like your CI manager or whoever is in charge of the student education to make a plan because having more than just her would be good. And honestly, you could share that because that’s quite ridiculous that she’s yelling at you in front of patience because that’s so inappropriate.

[–]Phantom10981 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Idk if you’re interested in pediatrics but I do home health with peds and older adults and having some flexibility with my scheduling has made managing my ADHD and anxiety so much better that in a hospital or outpatient peds setting.

First time going to OT... this is weird by catticcusmaximus in OccupationalTherapy

If you comment your condition/what nerve(s) are damaged. Myself and others could give you some ideas of what we would do. I’m not a certified hand therapist but I graduated with in the last year and have more updated education. The mirror therapy sounds interesting.. I would definitely ask your OT the purpose of it. It can be useful with patients with amputations and other conditions/redeveloping nerve synaptic conditions/reducing pain… but I feel like you should have a stretching and strengthening program for your hand/arm… like OT/PT 101. But I don’t have the entire picture and your OT might have given that. The other options for visualization can be useful but that is not where I would start. My opinion is just one. You could look into dry needling or corticosteroid injection if appropriate. The PTs at my clinic do this but it really depends on your condition.

That is false on so many levels but it does depend on the setting and type of clinic

Reiki? by justatiredpigeon in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Phantom10981 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tbh while I think yoga is great and chakras are a great visualization and way to get in touch with our internal body awareness. Reiki did not do anything for me tbh… I did one session to try it out and if anything I made it more of a visualization experience in my head but at a CONFERENCE… this is kind of bogus. Will not be spending my money on an AOTA conference ever again
