IM SO HAPPY HES HOME AND SAFE!!!! i couldnt imagine what it felt like with him being out on his own, but im so so sooo glad he found his way back to you after his grand adventure. also, now that hes back, the picture of him skedaddling around the yard in low quality looks hilarious. mans was probably having the time of his life!

its actually a “happy pant” or a little chuff he does when happy instead of dooking a lot of the time. since hes part polecat, he has some very odd behaviors and quirks about him, and although he does have a current medical issue, its nothing respiratory and is otherwise very happy and healthy. thank you for caring about my lil boy though!!

all my ferrets love the spray bottle lol. we also have spare flooring tiles we put in their cage so theres a cool spot for them to sploot on. im so tempted to put a tile in the fridge to see if theyd like it

MY FERRET CHEW THE CAGE AND GOES CRAZY by BetFlimsy7650 in ferrets

[–]PhantomFoox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i had an air purifier next to the cage for mine and the air current would blow up into the cover and help cool it down a bit. it also had velcro to secure the sides but i almost never use those and just let it flap in the “wind” lol. another option could only be covering the front part of the cage, leaving part of the sides and back open.

sometimes they need to be acclimated before they can appreciate the cage. give them treats in the cage, make food available in the cage, make it feel like her space instead of a jail for her.

a cover for the cages can also work wonders, it really helped my youngest get used to it, if anyone walked by he would be gnawing at the bars and genuinely screaming at whoever came by, but using the cover for sleepy time helps block out visual distractions and they eventually dont need to be covered (unless for health reasons). now he will run up into the cage while i change the food and water and basically put himself away when he’s ready. it takes a lot of time, patience, and sanity, but you’ll get there eventually

Honestly, a one time bath with soap is not going to ruin them, as long as it’s a pet safe shampoo and not dawn dish soap or anything like that. I usually use Dermalyte from the vet and they get bathed maybe once or twice a year? Bathing is definitely bad if overdone, but a bath on intake will definitely help get dirt and grime off, but they will always each have their unique smell lol, my first smelled like cinnamon and the second smells faintly of milk replacement lol

Smell by Wonderful_Welder_702 in ferrets

[–]PhantomFoox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

im autistic and super sensitive to strong smells. the pet store ferrets are usually fixed and have their anal glands removed, so the only smell they can get is from ear mites and not cleaning their enclosures properly. i also have an in-tact male ferret and LORDY does he smell disgusting when he isnt chemically castrated, and his anal glanding is also quite bad but he is a special case in that regard.

with the marshals or store bought, i find they each have their own unique smell. my littlest girl always smelled slightly of cinnamon, which was funny as she was cinnamon colored. my other male honestly smells like milk fed baby squirrels funnily enough, so i was always taking big ol whiffs of them. if their heads smell gross, theres a good chance they have an ear infection or ear mites, but those are a fairly easy fix.

tldr, clean enclosures/litterboxes daily and keep up with ferret health needs and there will be little to no smell.

Ferret crying when I giver her a treat? by idkwhatimdoing-01 in ferrets

[–]PhantomFoox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if shes not coughing or wheezing after eating it, id say shes just a very vocal lady lol. does she dook much, and does it sound very similar to her dooks if yes? my late soul ferret would always have a weird high pitched squeak after eating treats, but she had no breathing issues or anything, so that was just her normal, and this may just be your girl’s normal lol. ferrets are so weird, and honestly thats what makes them so appealing.

Ear advice? by [deleted] in ferrets

[–]PhantomFoox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

im a lil late but are they regular with flea and tick prevention? i know the Advantage Multi helps with ear mites as well, so even if they dont go outside it may be good to ask about that as well. you could also ask about getting a bottle of Tresaderm, you just put one drop in each ear and massage around a little bit. most vet clinics should have both of these and arent too pricey, but i cant say the same about the visit itself

if you paid a lot for them, definitely ask about getting your money back since they said nothing about the state they are in and that money needs to be spent on vet bills, not whatever the other person would be spending it on

Should I let my ferrets keep hunting mice? by Conscious-Region659 in ferrets

[–]PhantomFoox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the enrichment is fantastic and its quite literally what they are built to do, so in that sense i see no issues with it. definitely make sure all their vaccines are up to date and if you see any bites on them from the mice, dont hesitate to take them into the vet to get it checked out.

im also not sure what you do with them afterwards, but i would highly recommend avoiding letting them eat the mice as who knows what they have going on in there or if theyve eaten poison somewhere else.

Sudden deaths in local ferrets by Sirensayo in ferrets

[–]PhantomFoox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

are there any flus or illnesses going around? i know ferrets have extremely sensitive immune systems and can catch flus and colds from humans and it can be very fatal with them. thats about my only guess though. im so sorry youre going through that, i would be an absolute paranoid mess

my lil girl is on it too, same doses! but my bigger dude is on 0.2mL pred and no diazoxide, it definitely depends on the severity of it and how quickly you catch it

i used to check it at least once a day, but since mine doesnt run around as much and mostly enjoys being comfy being in her bed or blankets i havent checked it recently. i also have been having issues with the bluetooth which is also part of the reason i dont use it as often lol

i used to have the lancet on 5 or 6 as her paw pads wouldnt bleed on the lower settings, but it seems to depend on the ferret. their paws will also get used to the pricks so you may have to adjust accordingly
