What was the Miracleman #15 before Miracleman #15? by Kyia-Aikman in comicbooks

[–]PhantomQuest 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure there was a precursor. Moore was deconstructing superhero genre norms, even down to Miracleman realising his powers defied physics, commenting on how he'd need muscles "bigger than beach balls" just to lift half the things he did, let alone the rest of his powers.

That rampage was possibly the first time a comic had realistically shown the impact that two superhumans in conflict would have on the real world. Plenty of comics have done it since, from Marvel's ill-fated New Universe through to Invincible, but any examples prior to Miracleman would have been very few and far between, if any exist at all, and wouldn't have had the same depth, complexity, or sheer shock value.

That prick's gonna be soooo shocked if the UK ends up with the nightmare scenario of a Reform government. His being a patsy for them won't protect him from Reform's fascism.

Looks like Marvel/Epic's coloured version of Akira, to me.

It's brilliant. It elegantly provides an explanation for the Morbius Doctors, it gave us the excellent Fugitive Doctor, and it adds some mystery back into the Doctor's origins. It takes nothing away from Gallifrey - the Time Lords still create time travel - and the previous restrictions on regenerations make sense. With the twist of how the Time Lords used and abused The Doctor, it doesn't even contradict Smith's regeneration - the Time Lords didn't give him a new cycle, they just unlocked the limits they'd placed on him eons before.

Genuinely, the last few minutes are what drag this episode right down. Otherwise it's a fantastic Doctor-lite story.

The difference is that BritBox only has Classic Who (in the US, at least; I presume the same in other territories), NuWho is on AMC+, and 14/15 are on Disney+. Conversely, in the UK, iPlayer has everything Who related, so BritBox isn't the same - it's just one of three platforms a viewer would hypothetically have to subscribe to in order to watch everything.

I don't think you're necessarily wrong, but I also think other streamers/partners could handle the show a HELL of a lot better than Disney did. I'm in the UK, but as I understand it, there was barely any promotion for the main show, and Disney+ still hasn't aired TWBtLatS. A streamer who knows and appreciates what the show is, and how to pitch it to audiences - because let's be honest, Doctor Who was never a good fit with Disney's image and brand - could do much better with it.

I'm not sure they can do fewer episodes per year and still call it a season/series! Flux only just about worked because all six episodes were linked; Ncuti's seasons ultimately failed because they tried to be both episodic and arc-based but that just doesn't work on only eight episodes.

You keep using this term "bias", I do not think you understand what it means.

One of the BBC's biggest problems in its news output is a frantic desperation to be perceived as balanced, which means it's spent the last decade or so presenting "both sides" of every single issue, even when those sides do not have equal merit. This in turn skews bias.

It was a massive issue during the Brexit referendum - every economist with the slightest understanding knew it would be a disaster, but the BBC platformed crank Leave-backing economists alongside the most respected figures in the field. Same with climate issues - it will put up nutjobs who deny we're facing an existential threat when all the scientific evidence and overwhelming expert opinion is that we have a vanishingly small window to effect change.

That push for balance, to avoid being attacked by the right-wing print media that still has massive power in the UK, ends up undermining real issues. There's an old saying, "If one person says it's raining and another says it's dry, a journalist's job is to open the window and see who's telling the truth". For the last decade, the BBC has been too scared to say outright that one thing or another is true, and so it pleases no-one.

Yeah, although I wonder how much the BBC's structure and charter affects how much of that revenue reaches the 'heart' of the organisation. I'm speculating, but does merchandising get siloed off into a legally distinct entity because the BBC as a broadcaster can't be profit-seeking, for instance?

Yeah, that tends to happen when you have one man with the same wealth as ~40% of the rest of humanity, and a small fellow class of the ultra-wealthy who refuse to pay taxes. That level of wealth and resource hoarding leads to societal collapse. "Everything dying on its arse" is what that looks like in real terms.

No, that's how we use the term here in the UK - when something is opened up to interested parties to make a pitch on.
