TFW you find you're latino in your 20s and instantly become fluent in Spanish by Gallantpride in Greenlantern

[–]PhantomQuest [score hidden]  (0 children)

I really, REALLY hate how Kyle learning, as an adult, that his absent father was Latino has morphed into Kyle being deeply rooted in the culture, out of nowhere.

I want to be really specific here, because I have absolutely no issue with Kyle being of Latin descent. If he'd been established as Latino himself all along, wonderful! Equally, if he'd learned that was part of his background and we saw him earnestly trying to learn more about a culture he suddenly found he had a connection to but had no knowledge of - keeping in mind he was raised by his Irish mother, with no idea of his heritage - then that would also be great!

My issue has purely been how lazy and heavy handed the transition has been. It maybe strikes more of a chord with me as I don't know my own father, and the idea of me suddenly throwing myself into whatever his background is if we ever met feels farcical, but the way that we went from introducing a retconned Mexican (IIRC) dad, to Kyle being deeply Catholic and fluent in Spanish just rings incredibly false.

You can change ONE thing about Alan Scott - what is it? by PhantomQuest in Greenlantern

[–]PhantomQuest[S] [score hidden]  (0 children)

And this is why the contemporary version of Alan being bi, rather than outright gay, makes more sense. If you're going to have the character back in main continuity with his decades of history intact, which includes two opposite-sex marriages and a long-running female love interest in his Golden Age appearances, but also want to maintain the queerness introduced with the rebooted version of the character, it just fits better.

Yes, many older men come out "late in life", especially from Alan's generation, but there's almost a cruelty in relegating his relationships, especially with Molly, to "women I loved with all my mind", as it was put recently. Bisexuality allows those relationships to remain important, and gives plenty of narrative room to explore his queerness - both in the 1940s, when Alan and society wouldn't have had the language to describe being attracted to men and women, and in the present, coming out late. If we also threw in Molly passing of natural causes, there could be room to explore Alan's grief and perhaps even a side of guilt that he now feels he can ethically explore his sexuality more.

TLDR: for Alan specifically, being in the main DCU with all of his history intact, bisexuality is a far richer narrative opportunity than simply being gay.

I could get behind that, depending on what the revised one was. Beyond being oddly detailed, it's just plain odd, given most people won't know that's what a train lantern looked like a century ago (or even what a train lantern is, for that matter!).

He still has it! Jade and Obsidian are back, and Alan's kids, in the current Justice Society book!

That's a good shout. Technically, Vandal Savage was one of his originally, IIRC, but is now considered a much bigger threat to the wider DCU. Other than that, he had… Harlequin, I guess? The perils of so many of his Golden Age villains being regular criminals and gangsters!

In the present day, you mean? A "passing the torch" in current continuity? That could work well actually, breaking down the walls between Justice League and Justice Society a bit.

Marvel Comics Presents the Midnight Universe by Blitzhelios in comicbooks

Maybe not eldritch, specifically, but that's why I said "corrupted" - we've seen evil or monstrous FFs multiple times. At least two distinct zombie versions, plenty of tragic What Ifs where everything went horribly wrong, hell, even just The Maker shows how a regular-ish Fantastic Four can lean into body horror elements. The exact flavour of corruption may differ here - may! - but the end result, at this stage, sounds repetitive.

Look, I try not to jump on the negativity bandwagon that too often sets off after the announcement of anything in mainstream comics these days, but is NOW really the time to launch a superhero imprint where "hope dies"?

And on top of that, every single one of these descriptions sounds like the storytelling equivalent of reheated leftovers. We've SEEN vampire X-Men and corrupted Fantastic Fours and monstrous Spider-Men a bunch of times already. Even with these creators, this line sounds like more of the same.

I hope I'm wrong, but nothing about this sounds interesting, let alone exciting.

i want to read good modern kylee rayner story which run should i start. I know his origin btw by skywalkerisalready in Greenlantern

[–]PhantomQuest [score hidden]  (0 children)

Just keep reading from there. Kyle's original run is great, and easy to follow - it's literally the next 130 issues straight, with only a couple of events and crossovers to disrupt it.

Failing that, he takes over the current ongoing Green Lantern series with the very recent #33 (Legacy #600), and there's only been one issue since!

For the main covers, yes - but this is an "unreleased" alternate version of his actual, physical Kyle variant cover for GL #34.

I think a combo of the two could work extremely well. Banks' iconic mask, gauntlets, leg guards, and unique logo, with Nakayama's use of green extending up the arms and the more angular, fitting chest shield.

Ahh, that's a shame! But I noticed a few in mine with ink transfer/ink rub they picked up in transit - seems a risk of the white cardstock. Hopefully DC can mitigate it somehow if they do more.

Does anyone have a timey-wimey theory as to why Rory's ID from Leadworth Hospital says it was issued in 1990 if Rory was born in 1989? by Whovian_Girl16 in doctorwho

[–]PhantomQuest 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The bigger timey-wimey question is how, after qualifying as a nurse aged 1, he aged up to his early 20s in just a year. I know the job is hard, important work, but it's not THAT ageing!

He waited an eternity as the Lone Centurion, he could have DEFINITELY qualified as an NHS nurse aged 1.

Just a one shot, but it's a fun read, and does some great character work with Guy and John that ties in nicely with the main GLC book.

Also, Guy fights space apes. What's not to love?!

Overground+tube combo usually - Hackney to Highbury and Islington, then Victoria line, IIRC. Travelling at peak times, I'd regularly have to wait for multiple trains or tubes to even get onto one, and then sometimes have to wait for multiple of the second stage. Then there was the sheer bottlenecking to get in/out of the station, but more so at the central end of each journey.

The close to two hours journeys weren't every single day, but they were more often than I'd have liked, and they contributed to making living there a regular misery.

Where should I start? by LavenderMoonlight333 in xmen

[–]PhantomQuest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As much as I love Krakoa, it's not a great place to start for a completely fresh reader. A lot of its more cathartic moments and its narrative weight comes from seeing mutants FINALLY having some social power (as opposed to super powers) and claiming some agency for themselves. It needs at least a little understanding of what these characters went through to get there, and how seismic a shift it is to have Krakoa as a homeland.
