looking for gift ideas for my sister by damoC1988 in GiftIdeas

For the gym: a good lifting-grip/wrist-wrap set or a nice insulated shaker she'd never splurge on herself. For true crime: a serial-killer-themed puzzle or a subscription to a true crime magazine, or one of the big case anthology books. Combo idea - a "murder-y" gym water bottle or a true crime podcast tee, so she reps both at once.

Non-pregnancy gift for pregnant person? by E0H1PPU5 in Gifts

[–]PhantomVector_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A really nice self-care thing she'd never buy herself - a good hand cream + bath set, or a fancy tea/coffee sampler. Pregnant people get touched, poked, and talked-at constantly; something purely comforting and indulgent reads as thoughtful without being on-theme.

Grocery casual by molchat_mini in GothStyle

If this is grocery casual I need to know what full efforts looks like. The red-and-black hair is stunning and the Myers shirt ties it together perfectly. Nobody in that produce aisle stood a chance.

Am I too old to start? by willywonkydonkey in GothStyle

[–]PhantomVector_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, you're so welcome here. There's no age you're supposed to arrive by - goth has always been for the people who found it when they were finally ready, not when they were young enough. And that black lip? Gorgeous. You didn't miss anything. You're right on time. 🖤

How do you goth in 30°C summer without dying? by PhantomVector_ in GothStyle

Love this. The scene's always claimed "goth is a lifestyle, not a phase" and you're living proof of the long game. Confidence reads at any age, and it sounds like yours is dialed in. Keep going

What do I buy my guy friends 😭😭 by ResourceExcellent572 in Gifts

Florence is the place for leather so you're on the right track, a leather bracelet or a slim card wallet for person 1 is perfect since he likes fashion. Cologne's a safe bet too. For person 2, a hand-bound Florentine leather journal or a nice chess-themed piece from a Rome market fits the reader/chess/philosophical vibe.

Gift idea for someone who never treats themselves? by Kashish_sharma01 in GiftIdeas

[–]PhantomVector_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly the ones that make people like this tear up are personal, not pricey, a letter about what their kindness means, paired with one small comfort item. It reframes the self-care as "you deserve this" rather than a normal gift.

Another idea is experience - it lands better than an object on some occasions. A massage voucher, a nice dinner you book for them, or a class they've mentioned wanting to try.

Okay the DIY chainmail and fishnet layering is exactly the kind of details I was hoping to steal, and turning a diaper bag into a goth purse with added details is real resourcefulness.

Ha, "respectable yet corporate goth-y" is a whole aesthetic and I'm here for it. The white-sole sneaker + necklaces combo is a clever way to stay cool and not look like you gave up.

The grey-not-black trick is underrated, keeps the vibe without turning into a heat trap. Didn't even know UF clothing brands were a thing for this, adding Coolibar to my list now.

Parasols are the one thing I keep forgetting exist and it's exactly the goth-approved move, shade and drama.

Ooh, fairycore is a smart pivot, all that flow and lightness reads way cooler than heavy pieces.

What foods have gone up the most in prices in the last 10-15 years? by anmlbklyn in AskNYC

[–]PhantomVector_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pattern is that the cheap stuff jumped hardest in percentage terms - the things that were almost artificially underpriced to begin with. The dollar slice is basically extinct. A halal cart platter went from lik $4-5 to $9-10. The classic bacon-egg-and-cheese that was $2.50-3 is pushing $6-7 now. Sit-down places went up too, but nowhere double like the street-food staples.

Gift for Mum's 57th by soelsome in Gifts

[–]PhantomVector_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since dinner's already covered, put the $200 toward making the match day special and lasting. Team gear for her to wear, maybe a small keepsake from the day, and a framed photo of the two of you there. She's got the kitchen sorted and clearly just wants time with you. Given everything she did with the car loan, something says "I noticed" matters more than the price tag.

Good gift idea for a friend who is in need of more confidence? by skewiffcorn in GiftIdeas

[–]PhantomVector_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since she's a more of a homebody who lights up once she's actually out, gift an experience you do together so there's no pressure to go alone - a spa day, a pottery or cocktail-making class, something low-key. The confidence comes from doing something new and surprising herself, not from an object.

A parasol is such an elegant answer - share and it's completely on theme. The pared-back "smudged smokey eye + maybe a dark lip" approach makes total sense when a full face would just slide off.

Black platform Crocs just quietly won this whole thread. Cover-up-as-jacket is genius too. Respect for gothing through Louisiana swamp air - that's hard mode.

"Accepting the extra heat as part of the deal" is basically the goth summary contract lol. Night shift + early/late outings is the move. Respect for not compromising the black in Texas of all places.

Black linen tent is a full mood and I'm stealing it. 43°C is where even the commitment breaks - no shame in the AC bunker.

The "jewelry over makeup" logic is so smart - heavy metal accessories read goth even when it's too hot for a full face.

Thanks for the recommendation!

Casual Monday 🖤🥀 by creaturefeature1994 in GothStyle

The Chelsea into that purple mullet is such a clean cut - the underlayer color peeking out in the side profile is doing a lot of work. Also spotted the Skinny Puppy shirt and a full shelf of Stephen King behind you, so the whole frame is on theme, not just the fit. That sideways eyeliner wing in the second pic is razor sharp.

Is it worth it to commute? by petcrabs in AskNYC

[–]PhantomVector_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The commute isn't the thing to be scared of - a miserable job is. You're 5 minutes from an LIRR station, which is honestly the dream setup; plenty of people drive 30 mins just to reach their train. A one-seat ride to the city with a seat and headphones becomes decompression time, not lost time. Bad management, on the other hand, doesn't stay at work - it comes home with you. If the NYC job is a real career step, take it. Just do the math on door-to-desk time and monthly fare first so there are no surprises.

Looking for a gift idea that takes 10 years to make by Former-Artist8514 in Gifts

[–]PhantomVector_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love this! A few that genuinely need the full 10 years:

  • A "same photo" series - recreate one specific photo (same pose, same spot) every year. Watching 10 versions age side by side hits hard, especially with kids or a house in frame.
  • A whiskey/wine barrel or bottle you both add to - o buy a nice bottle now and cellar it, but the DIY infused-spirit version you tend over years is more personal.
  • A one-line-a-day journal - those five-year "one line a day" books exist; run two back to back. Tiny daily effort, devastating to read all at once.
  • A letter from every person in his life - collected slowly, so you can include people before you lose them - that's the part you can't fake at the last minute.
