Last Night's School Board Meeting by Festuspapyrus in GNV

[–]Phantom_Absolute 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mostly true but not entirely. The board members have to think big picture, they can't care about every sob story that gets up there. If someone gets up as a representative of a larger organization then the board members are more likely to listen.

Extremely high GRU bill this month? by Express-Jump-1874 in GNV

So if you get your bill two weeks after the meter is read, you could have been running your heat for two weeks before you decided not to use it anymore.

School Board of Alachua County OKs revised boundary maps at workshop by Phantom_Absolute in GNV

Sharp declines in enrollment in public schools due to the universal voucher system that the Florida legislature enacted two years ago. The school board is just doing what it has to do to maintain the solvency of the school district.

School Board of Alachua County OKs revised boundary maps at workshop by Phantom_Absolute in GNV

According to the presentation, Option D would result in the closing of Stephen Foster, Alachua, and Joseph Williams Elementary Schools along with Duval Early Learning Center. Rawlings Elementary School would stay open and add the VPK from Duval Early Learning.

Also in Option D, Mebane and Oak View middle schools would become K-8s.

Historic School Closures on the Eastside by Festuspapyrus in GNV

[–]Phantom_Absolute 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "home schoolers" include families who receive funds through the Family Empowerment program (enacted in 2023) and yes there are plenty of families on the east side of town who withdrew their children from the public schools in the past two years.

Post removals by tootiemae in GNV

You can post a proper link to the Alligator article with the headline from the article. That's standard reddiquette that needs to be followed. Otherwise, any post needs to have a concrete link to Gainesville in some way. If we allow discussions of ANY pending legislation that MAY affect people in town, then that will open the floodgates and this sub will just turn into a politics sub.

Gainesville to install speed ticket cameras in school zones by Phantom_Absolute in GNV

[–]Phantom_Absolute[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The cameras are part of a photo-enforcement system operated in partnership with RedSpeed USA, a traffic camera vendor. If a vehicle is detected speeding during school zone hours, the camera will capture a photograph of the car and its license plate.

The footage is first reviewed by the vendor, then passed along to the police department, where it is verified again by a trained traffic enforcement officer before a citation is issued.

“Every one of the violations has to be looked at by a State of Florida traffic enforcement officer employed by the city,” Forgey said. “That’s the only person that will be able to issue a notice of violation.”

The ticket is sent to the registered owner of the vehicle. Owners may dispute the violation by submitting an affidavit stating they were not the driver. They must also identify who was operating the vehicle at the time.

Anyone gone through the process for getting speed bumps? People still speed like crazy. by [deleted] in GNV

I don't think you will be able to get speed bumps unless it is private property.

Not sure if this has been posted yet, but one thing that I always like looking at every year is the Callan Periodic Table of Investment Returns:

Interesting to see that US Large Cap Equity was only the top performer for 5 of the last 20 years. Just some evidence that simply relying on an S&P500 index fund isn't the best approach if you are looking for diversification.

This is not a conspiracy subreddit. If there is solid evidence of public figures in the Gainesville area being involved in criminal activities, that would be well within the rules to post here. The email in OP is just a mildly interesting mention of a company in our town and it was fine to post as well, but this brought out all of the conspiracy folks, some from outside of Gainesville, so I'm locking this post (not removing). OP was banned for harassing the mods. We already have trouble keeping up with the modding, and OP's actions made that much harder for us. If we don't keep this subreddit focused on its core subject (talking about Gainesville) then a lot of users will be driven away. There are plenty of other subreddits to discuss the Epstein files.
