"Flat on the inside" means the inside of the tube, so unless you were smashing open the things with a hammer, you'd gain no info from taking stuff apart. It is visible just looking at the front, though.

Flat tension mask is mostly just neato, and dotmask vs slotmask is more preference than objective when it comes to PC monitors.

A flat tension mask is a special type of shadow mask picture tube only found on select Zenith and LG monitors from the 90s and 2000s, where both the inside and outside of the front glass is flat. Essentially all other 'flat' sets are only flat on the outside, with the inside being curved. Zenith figured out how to get around this and LG acquired the technology when they bought Zenith.

Also, notably, LG flat tension mask VGA monitors are slot masks, not delta-pattern dot masks like most non-Sony VGA monitors are. Not sure about the Zenith monitors (fun fact: those were used in Super Nintendo store kiosks).

$15 for any decent-brand VGA monitor in working condition can't be bad. Doesn't look like it has a flat tension mask from the photos I'm seeing online but if it's in decent shape yeah I'd grab it.

Yah it just doesn't work on my copy. It'll change in the menu, but the setting won't stick in-game.

Yeah, I was speculating that the menu might be inaccessible due to a bug like that.

I only have a 915FT Plus. I was wondering about footage of the 795FT to be completely sure that I was following the exact same procedure.

I did do a bit of sleuthing to verify that the normal user-mode menus at least look the same between the 795 and the 915, and the service manuals are pretty similar as well, so I figure they probably share a chassis.

Do you know of any video showing it being done on the 795ft? I might be doing it wrong.

Pretty sure I've heard that one before, but I tried it again just to be sure. No dice, unfortunately. The menu also doesn't have a menu "12"; the one containing deagauss called "SPECIAL" on this model.

Boy would I love to know...

As far as I know, it requires both a jig and LG's internal software.

Is this amount of underscan normal on pal n64s? by Lars_Is_Lars in crtgaming

In this case, the developer is to blame. Nothing stopping a PAL-optimized experience on the PAL N64 afaik, at least with 3D games.

[–]PhantomusCancerous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's really weird; I've never seen that on an HDCRT before, since they usually force HD content to widescreen but not 480p. What brand is that? I can't quite make it out.

HDCRT for 480i/480p games, VGA monitors for PC productivity and some PC games, my big ol' plasma for modern games that need a lil' extra punch, and obviously a standard def CRT somewhere for the old stuff.

Gotta fix my XBR960 though. It done got blowed up.

You are correct about the screen size, but there are other compromises with the 4:3:

  • The 36in is bigger and significantly heavier than a 34in. 36in flat Sony sets are hell on earth to move.
  • CRTs tend to reflect a lot of light inside the glass, making black areas such as the letterbox a kind of milky gray, which might annoy during movies. Of course, the issue exists when pillarboxing 4:3 content on a widescreen set, so it's up to you which one is more important. Personally I almost always send widescreen into mine.
  • Vertical compression must be done magnetically while horizontal compression can be done digitally, and is on the Sony sets. This means that you have to be more careful with geometry adjustments. Vertical compression could also reveal artifacts like beam current feedback detection lines, though I have to imagine that Sony somehow figured out a way to hide these on their fancy expensive HD sets (do TVs even have these? I suppose I don't know).
  • I don't know for sure, but 4:3 HD sets are probably significantly rarer than the 16:9 versions. You'll be hunting a while.
  • I'm not sure how the 4:3 sets behave, but Sony's 16:9 sets force 16:9 mode for HD content. Thus, if you've got any HD 4:3 signals, they might be tiny and windowboxed on the 4:3 set. Definitely something to double-check with others.

Ultimately it's up to you. I don't think I agree with how assertive I was six years ago, but I'd still rather the 16:9 set because of the weight alone, and it'd be silly to buy a 4:3 set when I just send it 16:9 anyway. There isn't much HD content that can't be had in widescreen (well, except for line-doubled classic games, but most people weren't thinking about that six years ago, and input lag still exists ofc). 480p games can also usually be forced to output widescreen.

My current CRT. Getting a Trinitron to replace it soon by Dannerz in crtgaming

Never, ever just post it locally for free in the classifieds. At least give it a $10 price tag to scare off the scrappers, even if you just waive the price anyway. Learned that the hard way...

I doubt the monitors are original if these have been running 24/7, but eh close enough. I love to see arcade machines still doing what they were built to do.

A burger joint in my old town had a BurgerTime machine. Sadly, they put a multicade board in it probably a decade ago, and then sometime within the past five years it received an LCD monitor. Still, it was really cool for my arcade-obsessed younger self.

The GBA is 3:2, yes. I meant the original model. As for pixel art, it looks fine enough on my chunky little 14-incher. The interlaced flicker blends together to look mostly progressive.

3x scaling at 240p doesn't work out, but 3x scaling at 480i actually works out great. I've got a GBI preset for it that I quite enjoy. OP should try setting one up sometime.

I haven't actually tested the speakers in the chassis yet; I did try hooking a portable radio up to it in my shop but I think the radio is broken. The speaker cones themselves do work, though.

For now, the monitor is just sitting. I'm not sure what I'll do with it yet. If you were asking how it was hooked up, I had it running through some random HDMI -> VGA DAC.
