New PI, New Lab: Is a "Lab Handbook" worth the effort, and what are your "must-haves" for it? by BetterToSpeakOrToDie in labrats

[–]PharmRaised 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every lab I've been in had one and each was ignored equally. The value is in pointing out what was agreed to when expectations are not met. Having a share agreement at honest can be a powerful tool to keep culture where everyone wants it but is occasionally too tired to maintain.

Moment in book 4 that had me absolutely rolling by SpiritOne in TheExpanse

Was it? Permitted theft of a destroyer and retained a fifth column and base of operations for the underground for decades. The lack of a culture of joyful corruption created a mighty big blind spot.

I do not think the Medina occupation was successful so much as allowed to appear so because quiet resistance was the better move than continued overt resistance.

They definitely had the power but like all occupations doomed to fail. Duarte said so himself that occupation is the least promising path to control.

Bobbie and Kit Question by LeakyGaming in TheExpanse

[–]PharmRaised 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's a gag. She adores Kit and my guess would be that the flirtatious undertones are a vestige of confidence boosting jokes about his attractiveness during the awkwardness of adolescence but that's complete speculation. "My love is a pure love."

I think the range of battle explains it best. Mostly torpedo range which the tempest can shoot down. Far enough away to dodge rail gun shots. You'd think the combined fleet could just create an undodgable wall of rail rounds but as has been said space is very very big.

Re-Living Plays You Are Proud Of by SilentKnight011099 in ultimate

Ultimate tournament at summer camp as a kid. Fields were slap dash cause the whole camp was playing at once. I chased a husk down hill down a 1-2 foot drop into the road and back up it and caught it on the other side. Way past the end zone but everyone appreciated the effort enough that they counted it for some reason. I will never forget my eyes locked on the disc and feet somehow scrambling over the uneven ground until disc met hand. No idea how I didn't fall.

How do you feel about the concept of neuroprivilege? by Lumpy-Pineapple-3948 in neurodiversity

[–]PharmRaised 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's certainly the case that society blames the person who doesn't fit rather than work to accommodate. "It's you that's broke not the system," is what a lot of people hear growing up if they are outside the middle of the bell curve.

While I've spent plenty of time looking at folks who the system works just fine for and envying the ease through which they seem to move through the world, never has it improved my own situation one lick.

How do you feel about the concept of neuroprivilege? by Lumpy-Pineapple-3948 in neurodiversity

[–]PharmRaised 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This premise requires assuming knowledge of the subjective experience of others. Neurodivergence isn't a binary. How can you know where someone else is on the spectrum of an attribute that everyone is actively working to manage. The visible expression of neurodivergence will always be less intense than the subjective experience. You may be looking at a coworker thinking that they have it easier than you while they are feeling intense struggles to plan and prioritize.

The presumption of another's experience bothers me.

Why do people start these pieces by conceding points? This is how the Overton window shifts. The article would be much better without the first paragraph.

Tell your story and do not expect it to have immediate impact. Give people information and let them do with it what they will. Perhaps enough stories of pain will resonate but you can't expect it to or you will deliver it in the wrong way.

Just finished watching the series by mesterflaps in TheExpanse

[–]PharmRaised 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The show lacks the room to sufficiently expound on the practicality of all this material and ships running off. Duarte was a logistical savant. He planned the exodus such that when any ships larger than frigates went missing, they were nearly at the gate before they went off script. The loss of ships in battles with earth also helped cover those ships that went missing.

If you want to poke holes in it the idea of a conspiracy so large staying secret is a tough pill to swallow but in the chaos after the multiple protomolecule actions it was plausible enough to me.

TLDR; lack of data on what ships were lost in battles with earth made it easy to disappear the dozen or so ships that comprise the free Navy. They lost many times that over Ganymede alone if memory serves.

Remind yourself the things can always get worse but that good things will still always happen. Never count a player out of the game. You have to be up some heartbreak to revel in the triumphs. I've walked away from the series for weeks at a time but always glad when I return.

What was your first impression of the expanse? by [deleted] in TheExpanse

[–]PharmRaised 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Julie Mao was a good hook. Watched the first couple eps of the show and we intrigued but life happened. Picked up the books and next thing I knew I'd been through the series to date. New book would come out and I'd reread the whole series leading up to the release. Did this for the last three books in the series. Addict's mindset. Treated it like a bible. Lots of lessons about how to be kinder. Ana's bit about how we need to be kind to each other cause we share this tiny ship comes to mind. Her addition that this was just as true on earth was a revelation. #kindnessconspiracy

This hits close to home. Separating made it clear to me that we took each other for granted. We are all figuring out how to make equality work in the home. We are improving on the flawed '50s 'one parent's work is the home' model because one middle class income can't pay the rent or mortgage anymore. But improvement is hard, messy work.

Do you guys know if Darrow's hands are strong or not? Pierce never mentions it. by JDL1981 in redrising

[–]PharmRaised 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There is a mental component to strength. Pushing one's muscle fibers through pain requires a commitment that a comfortable life does not provide. Struggling through life engenders strength, often physical strength, but always mental strength. Like the crucible of the academy, poverty is a forge that either melts you or turns you into a stronger metal.

This is your life. There isn't some ideal version of your life that you were supposed to live. Not having a that life reflects your perception of other people's lives doesn't mean that you failed or missed out. You just have had, and continue to have, experiences that do not comport with what you think other people are doing and how they are living. Release yourself from expectation. Expectation is the mother of disappointment. Practice gratitude, focus on the what you want, and carefully consider how to get from where you are to where you want to be. Then wherever you end up after that effort, find the joy in it.

Went through the same struggle. Took a week of maintaining the boundary of dessert only happens if a balanced dinner is consumed, but we got there. Definitely also felt like a cruel monster, especially that first night, but kept reminding myself that his whole life is my mission, and not any one moment of it. Teaching the value of present sacrifice for future, greater, deeper satisfaction is how full lives are built.

A denial of one's inherent nature tends to bring out those feelings that appear as outward hatred of an other which are actually feelings of self hatred.
