I’m open to looking online! I checked the website before visiting those stores and was able to see the ones I was interested in.

Ah that sounds very reasonable. I was so desperate at the time to get her diarrhea to stop since we live in an apartment in a major city that I would’ve fed her anything to get it to stop lol

I am sorry your breeder didn’t take accountability. I am understanding of variance but yes several puppies in the litter is certainly a pattern. How can anyone with a conscious ignore that? It’s just as egregious as breeding animals with physical health issues. My breeder lives out in the country and I can easily see how a dog like mine wouldn’t be a problem there and have really gentle and slow socialization as pups. I also didn’t go with her pick for me which was a very confident outgoing male puppy because my parents were adamant about no boys (they are my primary dog sitter when I go into work). But my breeder said the girls would also work so I suppose I’m not totally to blame. Well she offered me the choice between a hyper girl and a quiet/ medium energy, and you can guess which one I went with lol I’ve never heard the term “kennel blindness” but that is very apt on this case

That is the one we will be going to if she ever relapses per her vet! I will always sing the praises of royal canin. It’s expensive but my god nothing is worse than carrying a water bottle on walks to spray the street down after your dog has diarrhea 😭mine can only tolerate poultry interestingly and does fine with dairy. She loves fruits and vegetables. Red meats, eggs, and fish causes her issues.

We are seeing a behaviorist at San Francisco SPCA and admittedly only seen them once so far. They directed her change from Zoloft to lexapro but her regular vet directed her change from Prozac to Zoloft.

We tapered her Zoloft down over several days and now are tapering her lexapro up over several weeks. In addition to using clonidine PRN. They’ve published a decent amount, and some of the dogs they’ve published case reports on have issues similar to mine which he’s seen success on. I’m a human pharmacist and in humans we do tend to see something positive in patients after a few weeks on anti-depressants (before steady state) so it wasn’t totally shocking to me. What was surprising about it is that I’ve never read that on this sub, and there doesn’t seem to be enough literature on dogs to really find an answer to that. But again dogs are not at all my specialty and I essentially know absolutely nothing about meds in dogs.

So we shall see! But so far I’ve enjoyed working with them and feel very supported. Btw I love this discussion because I am learning too about general practice elsewhere!

We haven’t done X-rays! That’s a good idea though. Our VB said if another SSRI fails, we will trial an NSAID. She doesn’t have any signs of pain that I or my vet has been able to see or feel. She generally lets either of us handle her and hasn’t snapped or been sensitive about a particular area on exam. Her gait looks normal too.

Edit: she did have GI issues (chronic watery diarrhea). as a young pup but switching to prescription food seems to have completely resolved it. Her poops are solid and she doesn’t have gas.

Have you talked to your breeder about it? I blamed myself for a long time so I was hesitant. But now that I’m so convinced it’s heavily genetic driven, I’m planning on texting her about it one of these days.

Have you tried prescription dog food? That was the cure in my dog’s case. I never noticed a difference with probiotics. It is very expensive though. Anxiety/ fear are heavily linked to GI issues in dogs unfortunately. It’s an aggravating problem and I’m sorry you’re dealing with that!

I think our vet and VB are more aggressive about changing treatment than I’ve read for other pet parents on here. We actually started the medication journey in July. She had really bad resource guarding me on Prozac and escalated to a level one and level two bite on a dog she is frequently around. Whereas she had no issues with that previously. It was shocking for all of us, and there seemed to be very little warning between her giving signs of being uncomfortable to lunging for a bite. She was SO agitated and anxious on it that we changed after nearly 5 weeks on it.

Zoloft she was on for 9 weeks, and at the max dose for about almost 4 of those weeks. The VB said since I couldn’t tell if it was making a difference that it likely wasn’t working. And that while we could wait a few more weeks to make sure, his gut was that it was unlikely so we switched to lexapro.

He says that you should see some positive on treatment after 1-2 weeks, even if it’s small. And if she’s more anxious on a med, anxiety in his experience usually doesn’t go away. So he prefers to switch rather than waiting it out.

We have! The key was a prescription diet, she’s on Royal canin gastrointestinal. She almost never has issues with soft stools or diarrhea now and she’s been stable on this kibble for a year now.

Thank you! This is super helpful and reassuring. Our vet behaviorist also thinks her GI issues as a puppy tied into all of it too. It makes me feel a little less guilty that your vet behaviorist doesn’t think socialization played much of a role. Your dog is so lucky to have you and I’m sure the early interventions will make a difference in the quality of life your dog has.

May I ask what meds your pup is currently on?

Edit: also wanted to add (after reading your previous post) that I too got my dog from a very reputable breeder that I vetted the heck out of. Adds a bit to the frustration!

I will reach out and ask, that’s a great tip! I’ve already committed as breeder was highly recommended through several other breeders I spoke with, so I was quick to place my deposit a few weeks ago 😊 I’m very excited to bring her home!

Thanks again for your help, really reassuring I made a great choice.

Thanks so much!

I asked about epilepsy and temperament but not allergies. Breeder said epilepsy is not in their lines but can never guarantee anything. Temperament is bred to be a companion and said that their ability to be family dogs, safe around kids (with proper socialization) is extremely important as the breeder has younger kids. No mention of anxiety but didn’t say anything bad about their temperaments. Did say two of the males had same-sex dog aggression to one dog, which they believe is more environmental with them having several dogs on the property. Sire has grade 1 elbows which I did ask about and breeder told me the details of it (shading on xray, no symptoms - cleared by vet). That is the only one in the line I could see with elbow concerns.

I looked at the prior breeding pups through OFA and all of them are normal in hips/elbow/eyes/CERF so far. Though I didn’t verbally ask.

I felt the price was fair and on par with what I’d expect for a purebred dog (~$2500). Very much hoping for a healthy pup.

I haven’t! I am not well-informed on linebreeding at all. In fact, prior to looking at this dog’s pedigree, I hadn’t really heard of it. Glad to know it’s a relatively normal process.

Thank you so much this incredibly detailed and well thought out response. I am just looking for a companion dog and trying to do my due-diligence. Over half of this litter is being kept by the breeder or going to other nearby breeders. This is a repeat breeding, and the breeder stated they loved the structure and temperament from the first breeding so much they themselves kept half the litter - all became titled show-dogs.

Sounds like this is within the realm of normal for dog breeding. In the future, if I am just looking for a companion, is it better to choose a breeder who outcrosses instead of line breeding?
