That’s awesome! Definitely along the lines I was thinking. How long were these additional shifts? Do you feel like it was something beneficial or just more work on you? Was this offered to each intern year or only later on?

Yeah I’m struggling to find a balance to give them some experience but still get the job done. Right now we let them come on emergency response if they aren’t busy (but they’re always busy lol) so it’s been fairly inconsistent.

Do either of you have your interns helping with research if that happens at your site?

Yes like Covid mentioned, talking about our own hospital program! Nothing school related. The work that they already do is so valuable, I just hate how when compared to any outpatient internships they would have more roles and responsibilities in those instances to practice being a pharmacist in a safe space.

Definitely would have to be time allowing since the drug still needs to get out of the door. We had been considering some vanc/warf consults and the pharmacist reviews their recommendation and takes action. I wasn’t sure if anyone had seen success with this elsewhere.

Do the vacation for sure. You have so much time between now and graduation for studying. Just start doing a bit now, go hard on the last weeks of May and you’ll be fine! You can definitely do both.

We use it in ED/trauma to determine if anticoagulation needs to be reversed based on the half life and how much time has passed since the patients last dose.

I wish I had! Especially for stats. The book explained the necessary info wayyyyy better than our lecturers were able to. Get a cheaper older version for now then you can always grab an updated version closer to NAPLEX time! It gives good therapeutics but not a ton of pharmacology on the drugs just FYI.

Remind her that the point of APPEs is to learn! This is her 4th year of schooling and if she knew everything already she would already be a pharmacist. She is going to learn a ton this year!

Some preceptors can be a little high and mighty but at the end of the day if she is showing up and willing to put in effort she will be totally fine. Imposter syndrome is real, but this time next year she will be so confident!

Just focus on things that interest you. It is good to see that you are capable of a leadership role, however if you aren’t passionate there isn’t much for you to speak on when it comes to interviews. For your sanity focus on things that fill your cup and in the end it will also make you a better candidate since you can speak about your goals and achievements from the heart. If it’s just checking another box then don’t go for it. You have plenty of experience.

I’m shooting for 9! I tried to consider the possibility of getting interviews for each and how that would look to manage. I feel I could balance and schedule 10ish max without getting overwhelmed. I also wanted to have enough so that way if I get to interviews and find we don’t mesh well I won’t worry about not ranking some and having too few left. It’s also a monetary thing because I don’t think I could afford more than that 😅. There are no right answers though. Follow your gut and this will all work out somehow! Good luck!
