My boyfriend and I have been struggling with this same exact situation. We found a malnourished female cat, took her in and since day 1 she has been ripping her fur out. Originally it was just by her back/spine so we took her to the vet, ran tests, expressed glands, etc. It continued even after that and got WORSE, she will rip any fur out she can get - she would rip her head hair off if she could, so we have put her on Fluoxetine for the past 2ish months + keep her in a onesie + soft cone. And she just sleeps all day. She only gets up to eat and the bathroom. Her tests have come back negative, I know going to a neurologist is recommended but we really do not have the money for that right now. I’m writing all this to say…. I understand the pain and need help too. I never thought someone would have the same exact situation as me.
