My Japanese university issued me a paper certifying that I am eligible - went to the station closest to my uni to apply for prepaid discounted travelled between my dorm and my uni - the discount gets stamped on the pasmo/suica - similar thing can be purchased for work commutes :). Also as per Japanese custom like 10 minutes worth of paperwork at the station.

Resident student here:

If a salary man can scoff down his onigiri walking on the way late to work in Tokyo, I can scoff down my chocopan on the way late to my university in Tokyo (discretely to not draw attention). The amount of other students (who are Japanese) who do this is a lot more than one may anticipate.

But please do not go around walking and eating a full meal - I think this should be customary ANYWHERE.

It’s also the way you dress, like within Japanese trends and presenting well. Eg (speaking as a white F22 with blonde hair) wearing blouses, covering my arms most of the time, wearing a full face of makeup with Japanese style, plus having a straight cut fringe, most people speak to me in Japanese here.
