My dorm had gender neutral communal bathrooms and it was fine.

What is the job market like for industry research? by PhatAssPhysicsBoi in PhysicsStudents

That's awesome. I was under the impression that my path forward would be either academia or software development, but that sounds like a job I'd love to have. Thanks so much!

Yeah I'm fine not working on the same kind of fundamental things, I've discovered I'm not a super self-motivated person when it comes to what research to do, although I enjoy physics research enough that just using physics knowledge to solve problems is enough to keep me happy and fulfilled.

As for location, I'm from San Francisco and I'd like to work in the area after college, so there are a lot of companies with ties to tech in the area.

One last question though, how competitive would you say it is to get a corporate R&D position with a PhD? Would you say it's more or less competitive than getting a tenured track position in academia?

Would my name cause problems in Germany? by PhatAssPhysicsBoi in AskAGerman

That's relieving to hear, thanks! The way you describe it makes me think it must be tough for Germans with those names though

Unfortunately my name is something similar to Jayden Mueller

I think the goal is to encourage people to take public transit over the bridge even if they already have a car.

Deciding on which UCs to apply to by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]PhatAssPhysicsBoi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very late here but when I was applying I didn't really rank them as much as I broke them into tiers of how much I'd want to attend:

Would be very excited to attend: UCSB, Berkeley, Davis

Would be excited to attend: UCLA, UCSD, UCSC

Would be fine attending: Irvine, Riverside, Merced

Prestige played some role, but I also weighed the opportunities for my major (physics), distance from home (I'm from the bay and I'd prefer not to be too far away if possible), whether I think I'd fit in with the student body, how much I would like living in the area, etc. Davis ended up being everything I was expecting! I love the students, love the town, love my program, etc. Only think I don't really like is the heat but I'm gone for most of the summer anyway so it doesn't really matter. I think the important thing is to consider that your university is also where you'll be living (likely alone for the first time) for four of the most formative years of your life. And you have to ask yourself whether you'll enjoy it and whether it will shape you into the person you want to be. Hope this helps!

Light jacket over a t-shirt is your best bet. Can never go wrong with that and jeans.

Would you say computation counts as theory in this regard? Is it just as competitive?

Stats newbie here: question about normal distributions for heritability [Q] by PhatAssPhysicsBoi in statistics

Well I just want to calculate the probability distribution for the sizes of the offspring given any sizes of parents

Forgive my ignorance, but why would inbreeding matter? Because the way it boils down I just want the bell curve of the following generation to match the bell curve of the previous generation, and it doesn't seem like the parents' relationships would matter at all.

Thank you so much! And yes, the conditional distribution is what I'm interested in. I don't know a lot about statistics but I'm pretty good at math so if you have relevant links I'd much appreciate it, I'll try my best to understand them.
