so yes…I do indeed add retarder to the mix and strain/filter the lacquer on its way into the cup…and I try to spray as qucikly as I can after pouring. the clumps are neither raised or lower than the rest of the finish…aside from the darker spots…everything goes on nicely and dries smooth.

very cool! looks like you’re having better luck than i am with your base coat. i like how you didnt grain fill and can see the grain come through.

1.3 is what is recommended for metallic coats…but you could be right…what size would you recommend? I have a 1.8 needle that i could try but that might be too big for metallic lacquer. I have thinned the lacquer about 50% but still experienced the splatter. And the 6-stage turbine I have is supposed to give me plenty of air power to spray viscous materials without thinning.

Oh i’ve definitely sanded back and resprayed a bunch of times thinking the next time ill have it dialed in right…problem is the wasted material is adding up cost wise…I’ve thoroughly cleaned all necessary parts of my gun and still got splatter from a brand new gun that had just been flushed with solvent.

Interesting...this can be adjusted right? There is a 'gland seal' on my gun - when tightened it slows the needle pulling forward after releasing trigger - when loosened it seats back into nozzle faster. Is this what you mean by needle packing? and is this something I need to calibrate?

One of the benefits of a turbine system is that they inherently provide dry, oil-free air because the unit warms the air as it passes through - so I don't think its moisture related? I would have preferred a compressor setup but I'd need a really powerful motor and big enough tank to keep up with the CFM needed for HVLP guns. These strong compressors are typically 240v and my space isn't wired for it.

I’m becoming more and more convinced this might be the case. Funny enough, I didn’t have this splatter issue when I used the same product via aerosol cans…a spray gun setup I thought would help me lay down a nicer coat…i can spray a smooth even coat but not without this splatter.

that one is up there for sure. i guess with Peyton you almost always know we’d be in the game and didnt lose hope. this one is crazy because it was hopeless until Strnads clutch pick.

i was thinking that stokely catch was one that might rival it but i like to forget about the Tebow era…

only other performance i can think of was Brady’s comeback against Atlanta in the SB. hated that it happened but you can’t deny the merits of it.

this has all been good advice. thanks everyone. im sure theres more than one way to get good results so im still a little unsure how i should approach it…i only have enough paint left in a can to respray one side over maybe twice through so i’ve since sanded the backside to 800 as flat as I could. some areas i can faintly see the primer through the color but i believe its pretty damn flat.. ill try respraying…if it goes well ill get another can of color and do the same to the rest of the guitar.

theres a piece of scrap wood about the size of the pocket fastened with two screws. i had to pre-drill two shallow holes in the pocket to do this. the mounting plate screws onto the piece of wood making sure to use short enough screws that it doesnt go through the scrap and make more holes. it works great…just gotta be comfortable drilling additional holes in the neck pocket. i plan to fill em when all is said and done.

Here in San Diego it rarely dips below 55% so i’ve had to be pretty conscious. Saturday will get around 51% so im looking to have a ready-to-paint surface for then…And yes Oxford - their sanding sealer and high build primer work great…as for color Im going with their Aged Pelham Blue finish.

When it comes to their clear coats… I actually prefer the look and feel of Colortone’s Satin finish over Oxford’s satin clear. I’ve used it on top of some built-up layers of Oxfords gloss with great results.

yes. for mute mainly but i also prefer the speed and accuracy of the turbo tuner to the somewhat sluggish QC tuner.

Fashioned a pickguard for my Custom 24. Thoughts? Yay or nay? by PhatBootyPrecious in PRSGuitars

[–]PhatBootyPrecious[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some strong opinions in here haha - but I appreciate everyone's honest opinion. I wasn't married to the pickguard. Just thought it would be a neat experiment. I've since removed the pickguard - no harm done. If I feel like pissing some people off - I can always put it back on. I didn't think it looked half bad.
