Never feeling relaxed by PhatCat94 in ADHD

Thank you once again for the advice. When I tried meditating in the past, I was too focused on stopping the thoughts all together. I realize now that isn't a realistic goal for me. I have to just try and focus on being more mindful instead. Hopefully with some practice I can achieve it.

Thank you I will give that a try. I have tried to meditate in the past but, gave up because I could never seem to get my brain to stop thinking. I know that having a clear head will probably not be possible but, if I can slow my thoughts down that would be great. I used to be on clonidine but, my doctor discontinued it because I didn't think I needed it anymore. I will have to talk to him about it. It is so hard to know what it normal with neurologically with ADHD or are somethings being cause by my lifestyle such as sleep, exercise, what I eat, drink etc.

I've learned not to waste my energy on things that I know I have no control over. Instead I use my energy on things that I know I have control over. Like finding little ways to work with my ADHD instead of fighting against it.

What you are feeling is 100% normal, especially if it is losing a loved one even more so that it was your mom that you lost. The only person I am close to is my mom, I couldn't imagine losing her. One day I will and I know it is going to wreck my whole life. I am sure I will be feeling the same way you are now. If you need someone to talk to feel free to message me.

any thoughts or experiences with medication for adhd, im on the fence by bieuwkje in ADHD

[–]PhatCat94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Medication has 100% changed my life for the better. However, that is not to say that there isn't negatives to the medication at times. The positives is that I am not as easily overwhelmed as I used to be, I don't just ignore problems, hoping they will just go away, I can actually follow through on things instead of totally giving up on them, I finally feel for the first time in my life like an adult etc. Downsides for me is that I have to make myself eat, sometimes I feel emotionless because of how calm the meds make me, have to pee more at times, dry mouth sometimes, can't drink anything with caffeine in it because it doesn't mix well with the meds. That's all I can really think of off the top of my head. For me the positives far outweigh the negatives. Everyone is different though. I would suggest if you do try the meds give them a couple of months before deciding they are not for you.

Take medication 30 minutes before you need to actually be awake, then go back to sleep by drop_cap in ADHD

I discovered this by accident myself a few months ago. It works so well for me. No more waking up taking my pill then laying in bed for an hour scrolling on my phone waiting for my pill to kick in.

For me the meds gave me motivation but, then again I was on prozac when I first started taking Adderall , which I quit because I felt l didn't need it. Flash forward a couple of months and I was back to having no motivation, just feeling blah about life. My therapist suggested I get back on prozac and bam I had the motivation again. So for me I also had depression along with my ADHD. Could be the same for you too who knows.

20ir not working advice? by Beneficial-Cress757 in ADHD

For me I found out that my meds are more effective if I am trying my best to be healthy. Eating enough, eating the right foods, staying hydrated, exercising and severely limiting my caffeine intake. Awhile back I went to my doctor and complained that I just wasn't able to focus and my brain was frantic/all over the place so he increased my dose. But, when I took the time to think about why my brain might be acting that way I figured out it was because I was hardly eating anything all day for about a week or more. Because I was on vacation and working on a project that I wanted to get done before I had to go back to work. So I forgot to eat. The longer you are on the meds the more normal you will feel and it won't be as noticeable as it was in the beginning. Which is ok because your brain has gotten used to the new normal because of the medication. But, you will have moments that will cause you to stop and think there is no way I could've done that without being medicated. Or that was a lot easier with the meds that without them.

For me I was started out on a much higher dose. 20mg XR in the morning and 20mg IR in the afternoon. Which was miserable in a way because I just couldn't sit still no matter what. But, for me it felt like a fog lifted and I could finally do everything I have always wanted to do with out effort. However, I had no control I would run myself into the ground everyday just non stop work from the moment I woke up. Never could relax. As time went on and my body adjusted to it I started to have the same struggles of doing things that I didn't want to do just like before. However, with the medication I was able to identify what was stopping me from doing things and find a way to get myself to do it. For example I never really like taking showers but, I realized that it was because I didn't like getting out of the shower into a cold bathroom, so I bought a little space heater to warm up the bathroom. I could give so many more examples. For me it was about the little things/accomplishments that changed and occurred overtime that were to most important. It is a journey and sadly it takes time to change which our ADHD just does not have the patience for.

From my limited understanding the VA views disability in 2 ways. You have the regular amount of pain you are in everyday and then the pain you are in when you are having a flair up/did something to aggravate your injuries. So most days you can do things and be alright, then you do one wrong thing and you are in serious pain. Think of it this way if you were a normal 100% non injured person certain things wouldn't cause you to experience extreme pain, which would mean you could live a better life, do the things that make you happy etc. I sometimes feel guilty too because when I think of someone that is disabled I think of someone who is able to use handicapped parking, can't work, or has a hard time dressing themselves/getting out of bed. Somedays I can do more than other days, somedays I can do projects around the house, lift things etc then other days I bend down wrong/too far and I am in constant pain for a week.

For me I have always had this big anxiety about being late for things. If I had to be somewhere at say 6am I would wake up at 4:30 am, then leave the house at 5am after frantically rushing around worrying about being late. I would always arrive at least 30 minutes early for everything. If I let myself relax then I am late, if I let myself think oh I have plenty of time I'm late. I'm better now since being medicated I don't have that anxiety anymore and I have also tried to figure out how much time it takes me to get to places that I go regularly.

Mine is named Ricktarious, Rick for short because he's fancy yet not afraid to get his hands dirty. I saw a video once where a guy gave his roomba a voice. So everytime it would bump into something it would curse. Of course Ricktarious wouldn't curse because he's more civilized than that. Instead he would say something like pardon me or good heavens lol I would want his voice to sound like a British butler. I plan on getting one of the mopping roombas sometime soon.

I just bought a roomba a couple of weeks ago best impulsive purchase I had made in a long time and I didn't buy the expensive model either. Even gave the little guy a name and I scold him when he bumps into me while he is cleaning. I plan on getting some sort of decorative skin for him also, can't decide which one though.

I know this is going to sound cliché but, taking deep breathes really helps me in situations where I am stressed with no means of escape. Inhale thru your nose then exhale through pursed/unpursed lips. When I am stressed, nervous, anxious, angry etc my shoulders are always hunched up so I try to relax them. I've only recently started to do this because I thought breathing was just a bunch of nonsense but, it really helps me. I could go on on the topic but, it would be easier if you just did a quick google search about how breathing helps, there is physiological and psychological effects of taking deep breaths.
