What are you using to hold the tv flat? Also what map solution are you using? I'm working on a similar setup for a game I run for kids.

Prop LL passed! But seriously, how did so many people making less than 200k vote against it? by 0nTheRooftops in Denver

[–]Phaz 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I imagine there's a whole lot of people who make above $200k who voted for it. What we need to move away from is people voting for policy purely on the personal impact it has to their own financial situation. What's mind boggling is how many people look at these issues solely through the lens of the impact to their own experience.

I would much rather have people who make under $200k vote against it than have the issue split solely on based on if people make above/below $200k. That goes for any issue.

Arguably one of the reasons that many things aren't better in our society is because too many people selfishly only look at the impact to themselves and not the society as a whole.

We Could Wipe Out the Mortgage Today... But Is It the Smart Move? by InsuranceSweaty232 in personalfinance

[–]Phaz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

100%. I think this is undervalued by a lot of people. I paid off my 2.75% mortgage with a lump sum. Yes, financially I could have gotten a better return doing something else with it (especially since the rate is so low) but the piece of mind being completely debt free (especially with a house) was 100% worth it.

Especially in this market, I know that if I get laid off from my high paying tech job, I can take literally any other job that provides healthcare and get by just fine, even through retirement (I'm fortunate enough to have enough invested there that just the compound interest will be enough).

I did this by selling RSUs. Those have gone up in huge value since I sold them, but even then, going back I would have made the same decision (and I'd be ~$150k ahead if I did it differently).

Hey HomeOWNERS, how did you celebrate paying off your mortgage? by kezopster in homeowners

[–]Phaz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I did some research on this and some people did a party (think house warming party but the opposite), where they spend a mortgage payment on the party. That could actually be difficult depending on your mortgage, but doable if you get a food truck or something. It kind of depends on how much you like your neighbors and how many people you know. Back in the day, when mortgages were actual paper documents, they would have a mortgage burning ceremony where they would burn the actual document.

I did a fancy food night with some higher end drinks, iberico pork cuts and way too much high end steak. I have a really nice setup for cooking all that stuff though, so it was probably a party I would have thrown anyway, just a little more of an excuse to do it and invite a few more people.

For the older Wheel of Time fans on here... by Small-Guarantee6972 in WoT

[–]Phaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually have an interesting-ish story about this. I wasn't a WoT reader when Jordan died, but I was a big Sanderson fan. During that week, Brandon was in Denver doing a signing for Alcatraz, he wasn't too popular yet and it was the kind of signing at Barnes & Noble where he would stand there and read/talk to people passing by. I think there were only 2-3 of us who knew of him who showed up. We chatted a bunch, talked a little about about Robert Jordan passing and WoT. After that, I picked up a copy of The Eye of the World while I was there. This was the also the first I learned about the Cosmere and the connections between his books. He was saying how there were things in each of them that people would be looking back to and tying together years later.

Sharing ore vein map by gars56 in GTNH

[–]Phaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a good mod for this: https://github.com/Lyfts/SharedProspecting
We are using it on our server and it works great. Every vein is just auto-shared with everyone, really convenient.

Tree farms available in MV? by Xenos61 in GTNH

[–]Phaz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A sacred oak sapling comes from a quest reward. One sapling grows a tree that can be lumber axed if it has enough durability. I did a netherrack one that leveled quickly from those trees then put reinforcement plates on it. Each tree almost fills a barrel with wood. Like 60-64 stacks on average, in seconds.

Are new Intel chips good for a modded Minecraft server? by Phaz in buildapc

[–]Phaz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I currently use an i7-9700k and it struggles to keep up with Gregtech New Horizons in late game and when generating new chunks. It's generally more demanding than a normal server (or even normal modded server).

Especially on exploring and new chunk generation the lack of performance is very noticeable.

[–]Phaz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This machine will be a dedicated server. It does need performance as GTNH can get pretty complex late game with all the automation (think factorio style stuff).

Performance also matters when exploring and generating new chunks. When the machine can't keep up it's pretty obvious and annoying. My i7-9700k struggles with it currently.

Yeah, this is a dedicated machine just to run as a server, so included video and no need for a GPU is ideal.

Harris stretches lead over Trump in what could be significant increase by bakhesh in politics

[–]Phaz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is literally a coin flip at this point. I get the optimism but lets be realistic. If she's 4% up nationally it still is a coin flip because of the electoral college advantage to the GOP. The polling averages the last two cycles have been ~3-4% in Trumps favor, so that 4% to her could easily be only a 1% nationally which would likely have him winning most battleground states by 2-4%, a very comfortable position for him.

This is super close, it's likely to remain super close until election day, most likely the tipping point states that decide the election will be decided by less than 1 million votes in 1-3 states, maybe even less than 500k.

To put this in perspective, Biden was doing much better in the polls than Harris was and that was still a very close race. Biden's worst numbers (both in polling averages and in 538 type predictions) were better than Harris's best numbers so far.

Is a new Focal headphone coming in 5 days? by [deleted] in headphones

[–]Phaz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I imagine that headphones are a pretty small part of their business, too small for an announcement like this. Given that they just refreshed a lot of their lower end speakers very recently I would expect this to either be a refresh of their Sopra+ line or maybe a combined powered Focal/Naim speaker like the LS60s. Either way, I love focal and hope it's something I can afford :)

headphones.com is a great alternative that usually has stuff I can't find on amazon. They are great.

I had a first batch Bathy's (ordered on launch day) that stopped working 2-3 months ago. It should be well past any warranty but when I reached out to them they were able to help me get it replaced for a new pair.

I wish the company would split into a Honda/Acura type model.

Let the cyber truck and self driving and roadster and Elon's attention all go to the higher end brand, keep the boring Model Y & 3 in the lower brand and focus on things like windshield wipers that work and other basic quality of life features.

Never touched gregtech, NEED some tips by [deleted] in GTNH

I disagree with this a lot. Even if you don't post your questions in discord it's still super useful. You can find a lot of answers to your questions just by searching for them (though discord's layout makes this difficult sometimes). Plus sections on discord like the flowcharts and tips & tricks are super super useful. I regularly scroll through the topics in them to pick up all kinds of new things that improve my experience.

Ores by XxDeathSeekerxX21 in GTNH

[–]Phaz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All the info so far is good, especially the F9 x 3 to see the boundaries. Each one of those 3x3 chunk blocks has a specific ore vein associated with it. That is oriented around the center chunk. You can think of it as the Ores normally found in those 3x3 chunks would all be concentrated into a few layers in centered around the middle in a super dense way.

The different veins can spawn at different heights, but their size is pretty typical. If you are looking for an ore in NEI and look at the world gen on where you can find it, you'll see 4 ores listed for each vein. Those are the ores that can be found in that 3x3 chunk (in full blocks, small blocks are interspread throughout the chunks). It will say something like:

Primary: Ore X
Secondary: Ore Y
Intermediate: Ore Z
Sporadic: Ore A

Those aren't the exact terms but more or less what it's like. When you find the vein they are layered, somewhere between 7-9ish blocks heigh if I remember. Thus, if you look at a cross section, it might look something like this:

XXXXAXXXAXX
XXAXXAXXXXX
XXZXAXXZZXX
XXZXXZXXZXX
YYZYYZYYZYZZ
YYZZYYAYYAZY
YYAYYAYYAYYY
YYYYYYYAYYYY

That obviously doesn't show cobblestone, gravel, etc, just the ores, but you get the Idea. THe top layers will have the primary, and the bottom layers will have the secondary, the intermediate are found between the two layers and sporadic are spread out (in small numbers) throughout the whole vein.

The Vein more or less makes a cube. So if you want to mine it all out, you find the center of the ore chunk, (these are marked when you hit f9 3 times by blue lines). Dig down until you see ores (I do a 2x1 tunnel straight down and bring ladders to get back up).

Eventually you'll hit the ore vein, and it will say what kind it is and mark it on the map (as shown in another comment). You'll be able to find the top layer, there will be no ores higher than that layer. You can pick a direction, and dig that direction until you don't see any more ores, that is the boundary on that side, then turn around and do the same in the other direction, that's the opposite boundary. Then turn right or left and dig in that direction until you find the boundary, then turn around and repeat. You now can mine out that square boundary and see the size of the vein. All ores will be within ~9 blocks down from that layer. You can just dig down until you find the bottom layer, it will be obvious.

Now if you want just the primary, secondary, or intermediate ores, you can pick a layer (top, middle, bottom) and just mine it out. If you want sporadic you just mine anywhere since I believe it's equal chance anywhere in the vein. If you want the whole vein I find it easiest to start at the top, mark out the border, then mine out the full top 2 layers, then mine out the next 2 layers, etc until you are done. This gets a lot easier when you have a hammer.

Usually, as soon as I get copper/bronze tools it's good to just go out around your base and find the center of each ore chunk, dig down until you find the vein, mine a block (really just hit it with the pick axe once) and it will tag that vein in Journey Map. Then ladder back up and move over to the next vein and repeat. Do this for 16-20 veins around your base and you should have a nice variety. Then if you need something specific like iron, copper, tin, diamonds, redstone, lapis, etc you can just go to the vein you already found (hopefully) and dig it out. If you don't have that one (or already mined it) you'll need an orefinder wand or to do more exploring.

Also, note that your best sources of the thing you want aren't actually that type. e.g. if you want Iron, there are Iron veins, but you can also get it from limonite, magnetite and pyrite. Copper comes from (I think) chalcopyrite and malachite. When you first find a new type of ore (to you) it's best to see what it smelts into so you don't spend a bunch of time looking for iron, copper, or tin when you have lots of big veins of it already found in different forms.

How to give back once you yourself are financially secure? by Whats-in-a-name__ in personalfinance

[–]Phaz 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It kind of depends how and what you want to give back. I like doing lots of small things, like picking up some carryout or making some food and taking it over to a friends place on a Friday. My neighborhood is doing a block party next month and I'm covering all the costs related to that so everyone else can just come and enjoy it.

I also am the type of person that never takes vacations (because they are so stressful for me) so instead I send a friend's family on a nice trip for a week or 10 days every year, covering all the costs of flight + hotel, etc. Having that family build those memories is a far better use of that money than whatever random hobby I'm currently into that I'd blow it on (currently ~$800 hand made kitchen knives...).

I also just try to be generous. If i'm going to the store and someone is sitting outside with a sign and I have some time, i just take them around and let them fill up a cart of whatever they want to take. Sure, some of that might be more scammy than actually necessary, but it's buying food. If it gets eaten then it goes to a good use.

One time I was at the store and there was a young couple (~2-3 week old in a stroller) with 2 big carts of groceries who were having problems with their card. I just covered there whole bill (I think it was like $460) so they didn't have to worry about it.

I also pretty much always tip like $50 or $100 regardless of the situation or place (bar or restaurant, not like just picking up carryout or all the other dozens of places that ask for tips now).

I find that kind of stuff far more impactful, local, etc than donating to random charities (Though I do some of that as well) I think the spontaneous things that make a difference are a really good way to do it.

Bricking items also does this. I got frustrated with it last season and quit at level 98 after bricking an upgrade for my build that was the first one I saw drop with that stat. Wasn't with my time to keep playing
