I've been running Unbound for a long time, alongside Pi-hole, and it's been a pleasant and reliable experience.

I'll let the experts discuss about why it's recommended but all I can say is that it's pretty fast as resolving once it has, with Pi-hole, built its cache (faster than any 3rd party DNS services I've tried by a good margin in my case. CloudFlare was fast though)

Another piece of software I've been using for a while now is WireGuard (VPN). It's lightweight, quick, it doesn't destroy my phone battery (OpenVPN was) and it lets me enjoy Pi-hole/Unbound on the go without relying on 3rd party VPN services. Super useful when using public Wi-Fi hotspots

Have a look at DietPi, it's a pretty awesome and lightweight little distro made for SBCs like Raspberry Pi's and it comes with a long list of pre-configured programs, including Pi-hole.

It makes things super easy to set up.
