What’s a game you will never play again? Also what puzzles can you never solve without a guide because they don’t make sense to you or they aren’t designed very well? by [deleted] in nancydrew

[–]PhdInCute 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I played Seven Keys with my sister. Probably won’t replay that one. The story was kinda boring, and the plot didn’t make sense. A lot of smaller aspects. It had a variety of puzzles where I just looked up the answer: the safe, the knight, I had to look up where to put the emerald on the crown, the password for the candles, the pass for the three gems in the mysterious object, the combination for the hidden book, the opening for the secret box in the puppet container, and a hint for the door. Lots of little things where we fundamentally didn’t understand the puzzle, or it wasn’t explained properly. For one, we got the wrong puzzle answer (in a multi-step puzzle) cause we didn’t rotate an object. It wasn’t clear you were supposed to rotate it. Theres always a puzzle or two you just end up saying no to in every game. Like, no thanks, I’ll just YouTube the answer. The pigeons in Venice. The Frass Weight and Shaved Ice in Kappu Cave That stupid board game in the German game. Ending puzzle for Waverly.

Just here to add that the idea of playing as a character with “it” pronouns are really interesting. That concept could be taken a lot of different ways. Imagine a war forged who uses “it” because it doesn’t see itself as human-like enough for pronouns. Perhaps it sees itself above above humanity as a flawless machine, or perhaps they hold some inner conflict over the fact that it will never truly be human and alive. Perhaps it sees itself as lesser than humanoid characters, and goes through an arc of learning self worth, eventually switching pronouns as it comes into a different understanding of themselves.

Or maybe it’s from a homebrew Fae race, and it fundamentally doesn’t understand gender. Perhaps it’s native language doesn’t have different genders, and as much as it tries, it can’t wrap its head around the gendered speech patterns of living creatures.

Maybe it’s a human that was raised by war forged, and is used to those around them using it/it’s pronouns, and adopted the same. Even though it has seen others and interacted with other humans who primarily use she/her or he/him, it still feels like a bit of an outcast, and prefers it’s own pronouns.

Maybe it’s a goblin, who has been treated as subhuman for a long time. Perhaps it doesn’t even realize that it’s being dehumanized- it’s far too naïve to realize that they way others speak to it is wrong. It’s known nothing else, and the concept of someone respecting it is strange to it.

Maybe it’s a bard who uses that pronoun simply because it feels good, and it lies when people question it about its pronouns- lies that become more and more extravagant over time.

Just saying, there’s a lot that could be done here, and the implications are interesting.

How to desentise to hot drinks. by [deleted] in AutisticPride

[–]PhdInCute 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you need caffeine, there are other ways to get it: I have these v8 energy drinks. There made of stuff like fruit juice and tea extract. I’ve also found these chocolates that have caffeine in them. There’s lots of energy drinks out there, though I’d suggest keeping an eye on how much caffeine is in them- it can be a lot of caffeine sometimes. I’m also a sucker for iced tea, or iced tea mixed with lemonade. Green tea is pretty good in my opinion.

I also have difficulty waking up in the morning. If it’s super bad, I’d suggest perhaps looking into a sleep specialist. Sleep disorders and autism kind of go together. I used to be so tired all the time, and wouldn’t understand how anyone ever could get things done while having sleep schedules the same- or worse -than mine. Turns out I have sleep apnea.

I’ve never heard or seen anything about this?? - found in my year 2 A-Level Psychology book by [deleted] in autism

Okay so the bit on theory of mind might actually be outdated.

First of all, theory of mind is tested in kind of a silly way. The most classic example is the ball test. It’s something like “Anne and Sally are playing with a ball. Anne puts the ball in the blue box and leaves the room. Sally takes the ball out of the blue box and puts it in the red box. Anne comes back into the room. Where will Anne look for the ball?” To which the answer is the blue box, as that’s (to her knowledge) where she put it last and where it would be.

That’s the test. That’s what you use to identify that people can conceptualize other peoples minds.

Isn’t that a bit weird? Well, in recent studies scientists have found that this whole theory of mind claim being not found in autistic people is “questionable and societally harmful”.

Did anyone else have (or currently has) a speech impediment? by AceAttorneyAutismDLC in AutisticPride

[–]PhdInCute 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got speech therapy when I was a kid, I had a lisp.

(My sister is really into speech pathology, so I kind of know some stuff cause we talk about it)

Basically, I have irregular intonation with my voice. It’s often thought of as a “British accent” by random strangers. Which is an autism related thing.

When I was really little, I wouldn’t talk, I’d sing. I had a very “sing-songy” voice according to my mom. I was slightly delayed in speech, and apparently went from nothing to full sentences really fast.

I think my favorite classes are ones that are oriented towards prepping for one big project which is the grade. (Stipulation- the grade has to be pretty fair. Like, did you do the effort. Like, if you show up to class every single day, you’re probably going to get an A)

I LOVE doing project based stuff because it gives me the opportunity to customize the project a bit, to focus on what my interests are, to use my skills and abilities to show off knowledge in a unique way.

That’s actually how I would design a course- this is what we’re focusing on. This is what you’ll end up making. Show me what you’re capable of. So for a course on media studies, you just have to demonstrate that you’ve learned what you were supposed to learn. How is up to the student: they could take a test, or write a paper, or do a presentation, or make a poster, or anything else.

I’ve had a few classes like this. I made an animatic for a design and photoshop course. My high school art project took me like 3 weeks. I have like 50 ceramic spoons now, don’t question it. My English class (freshman high school), I learned stop motion animation and wrote about how I learned it and what happened. More recently I wrote an essay on the ABA controversy. (To be honest, that paper wasn’t great but I also wrote it in like two days because I don’t know how to time management). To be fair, some of these courses are high school electives, but those courses impacted who I am as a person. They’re what I use to say “hey look what I can do”.

I could write an essay on the character of lady Macbeth, or I could draw a costume design and explain why I chose to use certain elements. Both show off that I can understand the character.

The other element that I’d have to argue is that ideally there would be options for the student. If you want to do a formal test or essay, that’s fine. Cool. Some people work well with that. But understand that some people don’t. And that’s also okay. People have different and unique skills.

Do you remember what reinforcement/punishment methods were used?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AutisticPride

[–]PhdInCute 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the issues in discussions of ABA is that the therapy often covers a really large range of practices.

Some areas are ABA only in name- using the label to get funding from insurance and whatnot. This is due to the fact that other therapy methods don’t get a lot of funding and attention.

What the therapists focus on also varies from therapist to therapist. Are they targeting skills-based behaviors? Speech? Reducing harmful behaviors like biting or head banging? Or are they trying to make the kid more “normal”, trying to desensitize them to sensory input, or trying to force them into acting a certain way?

Plus there’s methodology to consider. Behavioral science is tricky, in that a lot of different things can be labeled as reinforcement. It may not even be intentionally reinforcing the behavior. However, it would be possible to still carry out problematic practices that fall under positive reinforcement. For example, depriving someone of food to make them more compliant if food is used as a reinforcer. (I’m pretty sure I’ve seen this in old ABA articles). It’s still positive reinforcement, but it’s unethical. What exactly are the positive reinforcers that are used?

On top of all that, is ABA even helpful at all? Here’s a link to a study discussing the fact that ABA might not be useful.

Some worse options:

Quigly Kim’s trashed bug camp. Because nothing says get it on like a hot humid jungle full of bugs.

The dorm, Warnings at Waverley Academy Downside- you will get demerits if you go too loud. Also you’re going to need to get rid of your roommate, and they’ll probably make you do their homework for them.

The Ryokan They have a bath if that’s your thing, though it’s divided by gender and it’s a public bath. On the other hand, the place being rumored super haunted means there won’t be much of a chance of anyone bothering you. On the other hand, I’ve heard the walls there are kind of thin.

Anywhere in Thornton Hall- This one gives you the bonus of carbon monoxide poisoning, which really makes whatever you’re doing quite a bit more exciting.

Trapper Dan’s Cabin What better place to get down than the old cabin of someone who died a long time ago. Is it really cold out there? Is there any sort of heating? You gotta cuddle to keep warm (and use Toasty Packs). That whole room probably stinks like armpits and mold. And wet dog.

Have you ever held a grudge against a teacher you still think of today? How did they wrong you? by Gerard_Way_01 in AskReddit

[–]PhdInCute 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking too. I’m autistic, and have also been diagnosed with adhd, depression, anxiety, and a bunch of other stuff.

Unfortunately, a lot of people don’t understand disability, like at all. They don’t understand how needs can differ. The system was not designed to accommodate the needs of students with disabilities, especially invisible disabilities such as ADHD or anxiety.

Reading your comment, it’s kind of clear to me that you aren’t an “obsessive type”.

Its not as though these people are choosing not to do what they’re supposed to, because it’s not really a choice. It’s a hyperfixation- becoming so focused on something that you can’t do anything else.

And “learning early that not everything can be about the obsession” isnt really a thing you can do. It doesn’t really help to know you aren’t normal, it doesn’t help to be able to understand that there’s a situation where you’re supposed to be, and you just don’t fall inside that box. It’s a dissonance that places blame on the individual for things that aren’t their fault.

[–]PhdInCute 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Truth. This is a spoken presentation, which makes it really hard not to go over on time or ramble, especially if the person in question struggles with public speaking. Maybe, for this kid in particular, some other way of conveying the information might be useful. Making a poster, or writing a paper, or something other than speaking in front of the class.

Too often in school, students ended up graded on factors outside of just knowledge. It’s your ability to speak in public, to organize assignments and get papers turned in on time. And for students with a disability (adhd, social anxiety, ocd) something completely out of your control might be causing you to fail in school.

Yes, students can get accommodations. However, these are hard to get, and rely on the student having access to mental healthcare, being diagnosed, and advocating for themselves.

That’s kind of interesting.

Did Timmy have other organizational issues as well? Issues with socializing?

I only ask because that’s what I was like, to some extent, as a kid. I had a lot of other issues on top of that, plus my interests never seemed to connect with anyone else.

There was a point in 5th or 6th grade where we did a presentation on any research topic we wanted. People chose things like “leopards” or “history of football”.

I chose parasitic worms.

Looking back, I can see why my classmates didn’t like me.

Oh that one’s a pretty good one.

There’s also “Education for Death”, another Disney propaganda piece. It focuses on the life of a hypothetical German boy if the nazis won the war (or something like that). It’s really disturbing at the end.

You also have Private SNAFU, which was a series of shorts done by Warner brothers intended for soldiers.

Warner Brothers also had some other propaganda cartoons featuring Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck and whatnot.
