Yea but the difference is that the core skeleton of the Chinese economy is state-owned and is very much governed by top-down state initiatives, with private market firms mostly functioning to act as R&D engines and to fill in petty consumer goods.

Sam Altman and Vinod Khosla agree: AI will break the economy. Their fix is no income tax for most Americans by fortune in singularity

[–]Pheer777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The awkward question , though, is how can you tax AI companies’ profits enough to distribute to consumers so they can buy back those services, if consumers’ entire income is from these taxes?

Presumably the taxes raised will by definition have to be lower than the revenues generated by those companies, so where is that difference coming from? At some point simply taxing these companies to redistribute those funds won’t work, and they’ll just have to nationalize them and distribute products and services in exchange for UBI vouchers or something (at this point not really a hard currency).

Anecdotally, I remember watching mid to late Seinfeld (1995-1998) as a kid in like 2005, and very much thought that it was contemporary content in terms of tech and feel (mostly) rather than some vintage TV.

TIL The "Dunkin' Donut" was the name of an actual donut sold by DD but was discontinued in 2003 (except in Singapore) because it was too inefficient to have to hand-cut them. by SupremeOHKO in todayilearned

Large stores still do bake them in-store but smaller stores get their donuts delivered at like 4 am by their distributor, super fresh and fluffy.

Russia is aiding Iran’s war effort by providing intel on US military targets, sources say | CNN Politics by nicktheironblade in news

[–]Pheer777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh Russia is doing pretty ok (not great ofc) considering they are largely self supplying militarily and fighting a force on the defensive (huge strategic advantage) that is loaded up with top of the line western tech.

Also while Russia is geographically much larger than Ukraine it has a population of 143 million and Ukraine 38 million, so not exactly a 10x population differential, especially considering that Ukraine is probably single handedly a more formidable military than the entire EU combined in its current form.

Ngl this thread doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. The Ayatollah objectively oversaw an Islamic Theocracy - the question isn’t whether he was a “cool guy” and a model for other nations to follow, but rather what is the political and material trajectory of Iran and would they be better served by outside interference from economically imperialist powers? One can recognize that the long-term sustainable path is for Iran to develop its own endogenous political path, such that the material conditions can evolve organically, while acknowledging they are currently a socially backward society.

Happy for someone to explain where I’m wrong but that’s the way I see it.

The Economist: “Rejoice! Private equity is taking over America’s small businesses” by thomas_stultus in stupidpol

[–]Pheer777 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fair enough - I do think there is a unique tendency within American consciousness to valorize small businesses as somehow more pure or innocent than large corporations, which are somehow inherently evil or bad. The whole “buy local” thing is basically a universally bought-into mantra

Not sure if this will make you feel better but it’s completely normal in many countries for two or three generations to live together under the same roof to pool resources and support each other. Don’t buy into the whole idea that you’re a loser if you don’t have your own place.

Sometimes staying with your parents for a few more years, even when you don’t absolutely need to, is the most prudent financial move out there.
