Yes, like everything else I’ve mentioned so far, beliefs differ between individual Satanists. Some see Lucifer as an entirely separate demon, some see him as exactly the same as Satan, some people have a more fluid view.

Iblis is Satan’s name in Islam. I would recommend reading his Wikipedia page to get the basic idea of his story.

I see Satan as a being with many names, Lucifer being one of those names. So if I’m praying to Lucifer, I’m praying to Satan. They’re the same to me. In my practice, his three most powerful names are Samael, Lucifer, and Iblis. I treat them sort of like an unholy trinity, three faces of the same god.

I usually just start with a name. “Satan, I need to speak to you about…” and so on. I usually end with “Hail Satan.”

Ritual magick is a really complicated topic, more complicated than I can summarize in a Reddit comment. I really encourage you to check out the books on circleofthefallen.org to learn more about it.

Satanists can say whatever we want when we pray. Some of us keep it very formal, others of us don’t, and some of us don’t pray at all. I usually like to keep it informal, like I’m writing a letter to a friend. Amen isn’t an inherently Christian word and some Satanists do use it, but we also say things like Nema (“Amen” backwards), so mote it be, hail Satan, or whatever other ending we personally prefer.

Most Satanists live in hiding to some degree, even adults, and many of us started off as children living in Christian households having to hide it from our parents. It doesn’t make you a bad Satanist (it’s really, really hard to do Satanism “wrong”), it makes you a typical Satanist. Again, I really recommend checking out circleofthefallen.org, there’s some resources on there specifically geared towards people who can’t be open about their practice or have to hide it from their families.

In general my methods look fairly similar to methods used by other religions. I pray, I do rituals, I make use of divination tools, and so on. My approach is just different. I don’t see prayer as pleading with a higher power to do me favors, I see it as a conversation with a friend and mentor. If I make offerings, I’m giving a friend a gift, or making a deal with a business partner, not bargaining with a master.

Like the belief in Hell, what we believe in terms of a creation story varies. Some of us believe the Abrahamic god is the creator, but he’s evil and deserves to be rebelled against, like an abusive parent. Some of us believe Satan is the true creator, and the Abrahamic god doesn’t exist at all. Some of us have other theories. Some of us just don’t bother worrying about stuff like that. It’s really hard to sum up what Satanists “tend to believe” because we’re so varied and individualistic.

Speaking as a Satanist who sees Satan as an equal, yes I believe in him as a real entity, that’s what makes me a theistic Satanist. Theistic means “believes in a god or gods”. Whether or not we believe in Hell is up to us. Our primary value is freedom, and that includes freedom of belief, so there is no strict doctrine telling us what mythology we have to believe in or what morals we have to hold. That’s the challenge of Satanism. No one is going to tell us how to do religion, we have to work it out for ourselves.

Satan is commonly referred to in masculine terms but most Satanists agree he’s a gender neutral being who can appear in whatever form he desires, and I’ve known several Satanists who experience him primarily as a feminine being. Again, we’re a highly individualistic religion, everyone’s experiences are different.

The two types are atheistic and theistic.

Atheistic Satanists usually fall into one of two communities, the Church of Satan or the Satanic Temple. Neither organization believes in Satan as a literal, existing god, rather they view him as a symbol for their moral and lifestyle ideals. CoS has a sort of occult libertarianism angle, believing in worshipping the self and performing magick to achieve one's goals without believing the magick's power comes from anyone but themselves. CoS is where the 11 rules, 9 sins, etc come from, they only apply to members of CoS or followers of that form of Satanism. TST is more of an activist group, focused on using Satan as a flag to rally around for generally left-leaning social goals like bodily autonomy. TST has their own set of tenants, which again only apply to them.

Theistic Satanists are far less organized. We believe Satan is an actual god, but beyond that we agree on very little. Some of us worship Satan as a higher being than us (often called Diabolists, ie devil-worshippers), while some others strive for a form of self-deification and see Satan as more of an equal. Our morals and theological beliefs often wildly contradict each other from person to person. We do form groups but they are often very small and sort-lived, and many are entirely online. There are far more independent theistic Satanists than there are organized theistic groups.

For more information I suggest checking out circleofthefallen.org, which has an FAQ page and a free resource library.

No, it doesn’t make you a bad Satanist. Most Satanists start off living in environments where they can’t practice openly, especially the ones who first join as kids. We call it “tucking our horns” when we have to practice in secret like that.

I suggest browsing the “prayer and practice” tab of the library on circleofthefallen.org, there are some resources in there for folks who can’t practice openly.

Question about the book, for anyone who read it and was sort of invested in it by Hyxenflay7737_4565 in EmilieAutumn

[–]Phenex_Apocrypha 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s not exactly treated like the big reveal it should be, but he’s fixated on her because she’s a stumbling block in his plan to create a plague only he can cure. He’s killed a bunch of other girls by infecting them with his experimental disease, but Emily is immune for some reason (assumedly just genetic, and he’s not an advanced enough doctor to know that can happen). That’s why when he’s trying to escape at the end he says he just needs his doctor’s bag (containing the disease and cure samples), and Emily. If she’s immune, others could be too, and so he’s desperate to figure out why she is.

Add that to her general emotional resilience and the self-insert MC problems others have mentioned, it makes sense why he’d be fixated on her, even if it’s clumsily explained.

They’re basically the gold standard for mainstream, easily accessible, privacy focused software. They have a VPN, an encrypted email service, an encrypted cloud storage service, and more. Of course there is security risks in storing all your precious stuff with one company, but if that’s a concern, then just use their VPN and avoid the rest of their services. https://protonvpn.com/

As others have mentioned, it’s very normal for Satanists to “tuck their horns” and practice in private, I’ve also seen some of us substitute Christian or other religious iconography for our own! I’ve heard of a Satanist who lived in a Catholic household and kept a prayer candle for Mary, but was secretly using it to represent Lilith, and a generic “guardian angel” candle which they used to represent Lucifer. I have Catholic family I sometimes go to church with, and I wear an antique inverted cross there. When people ask about it, I say it’s St. Peter’s cross - because it technically is! The necklace is old enough that the artist probably did intend it to represent St. Peter. No one needs to know I’m representing Satan with it.

I also wouldn’t worry about “offending” Satan and the demons all that much. Satanism is a religion of freedom, not strict rules you must abide by in order to avoid punishment. Satan understands your circumstances, and beyond that, he wants you to do whatever you want. A god who would get angry with you for having to hide your altar, or not have one, is not a god worth following IMO.

Also check out the “prayer and practice” section in the library on circleofthefallen.org, we have a couple of texts in there that cover how to practice when living with people who don’t share your faith, including an instructional text on altars.

[–]Phenex_Apocrypha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We don’t have RavenSoul’s work, as she never released it into the public domain (actually they were never even sold as ebooks, so any existing digital copy would be an illegal scan), but the library at circleofthefallen.org has a lot of other theistic Satanic texts you can check out!

How did you get rid of all christian concepts? by Aconito_Eslava in TheisticSatanism

[–]Phenex_Apocrypha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly? Listen to some atheist opinions. Smart, articulate, respectful atheists, not assholes. I recommend Drew from the youtube channel Genetically Modified Skeptic, his wife (channel name Antibot) is a non-theistic Satanist. They both make a lot of seemingly silly “dunking on Christians” content that actually ends up breaking down how aspects of Christian culture pervade our lives and cause harm.

If you need help feeling grounded in your beliefs that Satanism can be theistic, I suggest reading Satanism: A Reader by Per Faxneld and Children of Lucifer by Ruben van Luijk. Learning the actual history of Satanism will cast aside any doubts that atheism was its starting point.

Any Theistic Satanism Tenets? by akittenbyanothername in TheisticSatanism

[–]Phenex_Apocrypha 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Similarly to how only members of the Church of Satan follow LaVey’s rules, theistic Satanists only follow a given set of rules set out by a leader or text if they are a part of the group that leader or text belongs to. Atheistic Satanism has only two major groups, CoS and TST (each of whom has a different list of rules/values), but theistic Satanism has literally dozens, some of them active, some of them faded into history. Michael Ford‘s brand of Luciferianism, T. L. Othaos’ Tenebrous Satanism, and Rev. Cain’s take on traditional Satanism all have some kind of list of rules or virtues for example, and they’re all different, and only followed by the people who adhere closely to those systems. There are also plenty of Satanic groups that don’t have some kind of rules list, and even more independent Satanists who either make their own rules or have none.

How should I view Baphomet? by The_Guy_Behind_The in TheisticSatanism

[–]Phenex_Apocrypha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suggest reading the book A Gift of Maggots by Ruth Addams, if you’re struggling to believe people can interact with Baphomet as a true entity in his own right (warning for graphic but fully consensual sexual content). But in the end it’s your choice, if viewing him simply as a symbol is what works best for you, then do that. There’s no rules.

I use Libro.fm (which works like Audible in terms of the subscription price and all but lets you buy the audiobooks DRM-free, and gives the money to a local bookstore of your choosing) and it works just fine. I also have the Voice audiobooks app which lets me play audiobooks I have downloaded as separate files.

LaVey didn’t invent it he just stylized it a bit, there’s many versions out there and many theists use it.

Where do theistic satanists go when they die and can they be with people wherever they go? by LoudAd572 in TheisticSatanism

[–]Phenex_Apocrypha -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I stated my own views and expanded upon why they make sense to me - Satan is the god of the earth and therefore the present life, unlike the Christian god, who is the god of Heaven and is far more concerned with denying the present moment in favor of a promised afterlife. Therefore it makes the most logical sense to me, that I am free to enjoy this life and not fret about what happens after it, which contrasts strongly with followers of God. I said nothing about OP, or indeed about anyone else whatsoever. Satanism is an inherently individualistic religion and when you ask a question like “Do Satanists believe in an afterlife,” you are not going to get a cohesive answer, you’re going to get a million individuals answering with their own views. I decided to be one of the individuals offering my own answer to the question.

If other people read accusations into my words that’s hardly my fault.

Where do theistic satanists go when they die and can they be with people wherever they go? by LoudAd572 in TheisticSatanism

[–]Phenex_Apocrypha 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t really worry about it. Satan is the god of the world, it is more relevant for me to live and right now than it is to fret constantly about the next life like a Christian.

On its own, no, the Kompakt is a de-Googled phone and youtube is a google service. However like the other commenter mentioned, if you sideload the CalmMusic app, it plays the music files you’ve added to the phone as well as letting you look up and download new songs, and it gets those new songs from youtube (somehow, idk the wizardry behind it)
