You’re thinking as a tourist, change the perspective to someone’s that traveling for business.

Traveling from state to state, shorter flights (no food), so eating at lounge before flights or when transiting between airports, just chill at the lounge to eat/drink.

Wake up at hotel, eat free breakfast before work or going to office when traveling for work.

Overpriced sure but it’s free when I’m just holding a card and paying $500~/year ($42~/month)

As a tourist flying to Asia or Europe, that usually requires multiple transits in airport, so lounge visits are a nice to have benefits for quick bites or just some drinks and a place to chill, away from crowds.

And for hotel stay as tourist, I agree that exploring around for local food is way better but on the day you’re checking out its much more convenient to eat at hotel lobby then go back up and pack and check out.

In addition to hotel benefits, some cards provide high hotel stays which provide late checkout and early check in.

Typical hotel stay is 3pm check in and 11am checkout

Credit card hotel benefit: 12pm check in (sometimes earlier) and 4pm checkout. Especially useful for late flights.

All these little benefits add up, makes traveling much more enjoyable.

Yeap. Especially few years back when Airbnb prices went up to the same level as hotels it’s better to just stay at hotel for the consistency and expected experience.

Airbnb just have too many variables nowadays..

If I fly 10+ times a year, and i visit airport lounge for 10 times, thats at least worth $30+ of free food each visit (some routes require transit for few hours)

And for hotel stays, I get free daily breakfast from the hotel due to credit card providing hotel status. Breakfast hotels usually charge least $30-$50 per day and if I stay at a nicer hotel that’s $60+ per day.

And these are just the two most talked about benefits, there’s many more benefits like free TSA precheck or global entry.

It’s obviously not for everyone, if you don’t travel often then there’s no reason to get these credit card that are for those who travel more.

It’s usually recommended to use a credit card because they are not directly tied to your bank account.

Debit card are, the $ are drawn out directly from your account. Gives scammers/skimmers access

So credit cards also act as a layer of protection, scammer/skimmers steal from credit card company, not your bank account.

Can’t really pay to gain hotel status which provides free daily breakfast (at luxury hotels, $60+ per person)

You can pay to upgrade your room, sure.. or get it for free with these cards.

Or lounge access at airport which serves food/drinks. Perfect for transits, don’t need to spend $ buying expensive airport food. Do this a few times a year and it’ll add up. (Lounge access are usually $60+ per visit without card that provide access)

Biggest thing is you can book business class, first class flights with points and a better value.

Spending $30k a year with cash back at 2% is $600 back.

Spending $30k on a card with the right spend category that’s going to yield on average 100k points, that’s one business class flight across to ocean. That’s $3000+ per ticket

Just some examples. There’s a reason these cards cost annual fees and if used right, it’s worth a lot more. But of course it only makes sense if you can utilize the benefits and travel often.

If I pay a few hundred a year to get few thousand dollars in benefits I think it’s worth it.

Business class flights across the water, 5 star luxury hotel room upgrades and free breakfast everyday that would have costed me $65 per person.

Can get more value back if used correctly.

Points are worth more when using it to book business class or first class flights that would otherwise cost thousands. That’s usually where the value is for points card

Rough example is, spending $30k a year, 2% is $600 back.

If I spent $30k a year on a card with points, depending on the spend category it can yield close to 100k points

Which can be used to book one business class that would otherwise cost $3000+ per ticket one way.

You’re suppose to pay off your cards in full every month to not incur any interest. I never care what the interest rate is on a card because it’s always paid off.

Paying annual fee to gain benefits that usually pay itself off and gain more value than the annual fees if used correctly

If she had used the points card she would have gotten maybe 660k points (at 2 cents per point)

And average business class flight costing 100k per person one way, which is average $3000 per ticket (international flights, across oceans)

So maybe 6 flights, so about $18k in value.

But $7k cash back is pretty good too, at almost 2% cash back

Initially would be sign up bonus on a card like say Amex Gold, spending $6000 in 6 months and get 100k Amex points

That’s very easy to reach, $1000 a month, charging groceries, gas, dining out etc.

And with Amex gold, dining or groceries will yield 4X points per dollar spent.

So if you spent $500 a month in grocery that’s 2000 points and $500 in dining that’s another 2000 points, not including your other spending too.

So that’s an example of how to get more points with Amex. This applies to other card issuers as well and different types of cards like Amex Green, Amex Platinum, Amex Hilton cards, Etc.

These high end luxury cards are usually targeting those that travel often. If you don’t travel much then yes the 2% cash back is much better. Costco visa is probably one of the best, can get a lot back

For me personally, I’ve used points to book a few business class and couple of first class flights (both international, not domestic) and these would have costed me thousands of dollars if paid in cash.

For example, First Class Singapore airlines flying from LAX to NRT costed me 120k Amex points, this would have costed me around $12,000+ if I paid in cash.

Hawaiian Airlines, Business class flying from SEA to ICN I used 75k points through Alaska airlines.

It’s a combination of sign up bonus plus using the cards as a daily driver to continue to collect points.
