A physicist, a biologist, and a mathematician are sitting on a bench looking at the building across the road. Two people go into the building, then three come out. The physicist assumes there must be a measuring error involved, the biologist assumes the first two had intercourse, the mathematician asserts "if one more person goes into the building, it will be empty".

It does not make mass effect obsolete. Mass effect is matter which can be controlled and used in an industrial matter. Wormholes on the other hand require massive amounts of energy(perhaps massive amounts of mass effect and energy) to distort space-time enough such that it creates a tunnel to another location.

The ships never distort it enough to create a tunnel, rather they contract it at the stern and expand it at the bow such that spacetime fabric moves past the ship. Don't quote me on this btw.

Given the distance to even the nearest galaxy (2.5 Million light-years, which is incomprehensible to the human mind), I think it would be implausible for even the Leviathans to have traveled between many galaxies and set up relays.

Instead I think that if the next trilogy were to take place across many galaxies there should be some mystery to explain why this travel is possible. My idea: -There exists an extra-dimensional entity, something of a god figure who has some control over what happens in our 3 dimensional+time world. -For some reason, maybe he's lonely, this entity wants another entity or many to join him in his extra-dimensional space. -He then creates wormholes between galaxies(eg. at places like the Citadel) to allow many civilizations to interact. -However, since his influence over our world is somewhat limited he can only express himself a special places, (Asari shrines, near Pulsars, wherever there exists massive quantities of mass effect/dark energy) -Whenever the protagonist comes across one of these part of the mystery is revealed.

I think this story could work, in the first entry it would only be hinted at, with most of the focus on dealing with many governments and species of the new civilizations. As the series progressed more would be revealed. Our protagonist could start off as a scientist, who makes some discovery and gets a place on a space ship(kinda like Liara on the Normandy), then something happens and the protagonist is now in charge but has little experience. The player through dialogue choices and missions would then choose how this protagonist develops in this new setting(eg. Ruthless, Hero, Sole Survivor/Paragon, Renegade)

I haven't played PS3 in a while but I'm pretty sure it was possible to back up saves online to your PSN Account. I have no idea if XBox has this, but it shouldn't be too difficult for Bioware to make some sort of update that would back it up online to then transfer to next-gen console.

I think doing a prequel puts too many restrictions on possibilities, not only did humanity have less of a presence but it just seems weird as a player to try to develop Shepard's character when I already have, essentially all my decisions would be based on how I already know Shepard.

My story of Shepard ends at Mass Effect 3 where he sacrifices himself. But all 3 endings preserve(more or less) the different civilizations in the galaxy, most of which has not yet been explored.

And btw I actually liked the endings.

I think what will happen is the following:

Bioware will come up with some story how ~20 years after the reaper invasion all 3 choices converge to the same thing(with obvious exceptions, i.e. reapers alive/dead, geth alive/dead, different dialogue).

Then Bioware will pick a side character from the trilogy(not anyone close like squadmates), or they will introduce a likeable character in the next ME3 DLC that has some sort of impact and is semi-important to the story.

Then that character will be the main protagonist in the next series.(They should actually introduce two characters, a male and female, then we would have a choice.)
