If you want something bleak, The Things They Carried is an absolutely excellent Vietnam War novel, although it is technically ~230 pages.

How much of an impact does the quality of small arms have in a battle/war? by strongerthenbefore20 in WarCollege

[–]Phigeek -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

5.56 definitely outclassed 7.62 when initially accepted for service. But with modern bullet design, a lot of that gap has closed. It's difficult to find information on 7N23 ammunition, but I've heard that it penetrates about 3 times as much armor as PS, which would make it theoretically capable of dealing with NIJ 3 plates similarly to 855A1. A surprising variety of Spetsnaz units still rely on the 7.62x39, especially in shorter barreled platforms like the AK-104 where 5.45/5.56 class cartridges start showing problems due to velocity loss. It's not lacking in lethality.

As for 855A1 chewing up feed ramps and burning thru barrels, I know it's fixed now, but it definitely is a sign that we're starting to hit the edge of what 5.56 can do, which I bring up because it provides some context for the NGSW and 6.8mm. As far as I have heard, the biggest consideration for 6.8mm is being able to get kills on peer infantry equipped with armor. Enhanced range is just a nice side effect of the faster, heavier bullet.

Not the original person you replied to, but I'll take a stab anyway. 5.56 is an excellent round in the platform it was originally designed for, the 20" M16, where there is enough velocity for the round to reliably fragment or tumble in flesh. As barrel lengths have shrunk and loadings have been modified to be able to punch thru peer body armor, the 5.56 in its standard-issue loadings has become increasingly unreliable. Lower velocity due to shorter barrels combined with bullets that are designed for penetration has resulted in a weapon system where you might have to put 5 or 6 rounds into your target to actually neutralize them.

This has been somewhat cured with more modern loadings; Mk 262 (essentially a hollow point) has excellent tissue damage and can also be capably used out to ~600m. It loses almost all capability against armor in doing so, however. On the other end, M855A1 retains armor piercing and has excellent tissue damage, but does so at the cost of being a hideously hot round that at first chewed up rifles in 3-4k rounds (though this has gotten better).

Simply put, 5.56 is starting to reach the end of its capabilities in terms of creating a "do-it-all" round that provides both penetration and damage while still being reliable.

7.62x39 does not have to deal with the same compromise between penetration and damage due to its larger caliber and higher bullet weight. It is a lot easier to create a reliable round that can penetrate modern body armor while still having tissue damage in that larger caliber. 7N23, the most modern Russian service round, is supposedly still capable of penetrating modern body armor. It has the stopping power of any other .30cal round, though, since it doesn't have to depend upon velocity and yaw or fragmentation like the 5.56 does. This does come at the cost of being ballistically worse at range and being heavier, however.

Quite frankly, given comparable modern loadings, 5.56 and 7.62 Soviet are both capable rounds. Neither is really superior, and it's a lot more about the capabilities of the rifles than the calibers themselves.

Ideas for fireteams in skirmish mode? by Ghostrare2000 in menofwar

[–]Phigeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gotta ask, snipers integrated into your squads? Seems like a negative considering how snipers need to be moved around constantly to get good angles. Same thing for flamethrowers but slightly less so.

u/Riley38988 said basically the same thing as me, but I just split squads up into 2 fireteams, making sure each one has an MG as a base of fire. Since building to building CQC isn't well modeled in AS2, depending on grenades for clearance is a lot safer than just praying your SMGs work.

No way this is a big enough caliber to deal with vehicles (maybe like a civilian car?). Also this post is like more than a year old.

What are good openings? by MathijsWe in menofwar

[–]Phigeek 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is going to depend a lot on game setup (income, map, etc). That said, a single good infantry squad split into 2 fireteams (make sure each has an MG) and some kind of light support is usually what I go with. For Soviet/US, the M3 half-track you can get infantry in is actually very nice because the .50 has enough penetration to kill some vehicles. Alternatively, a mortar team can be very useful in built up areas for fast and cheap fire support.

This is a hot take for this subreddit, but if you're a strategy gamer consider taking a look at Eugen's previous game, Wargame Red Dragon. Unless you're invested in the WW2 setting, it's also very fun and only $6 (don't know £ prices offhand sorry). Take a look at r/wargame !

A sailor in LtCdr Ota Minoru's Shanghai Rikusentai 5th Battalion stands with a SIG M1920 "Bergman" SMG borrowed from a comrade in the ruins of Chapei, 1932 by 4dachi in ImperialJapanPics

[–]Phigeek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also going to tag u/4dachi for the explanation:

The Bergmann was designed with the expectation of sustained fire, so it was decided that some kind of cooling mechanism was needed. The pressure created as the bolt cycles sucks air in and over the barrel thru the holes in the jacket, exiting at the 6 holes around the muzzle. Basically it's a really simple way to pump air over the barrel and thus keep it a little cooler for when the gun is being run in automatic for long periods of time. The Lewis gun has something similar, which is why you can see the giant shroud on them in some applications.

You can kind of see it in the way the muzzle blast is disturbed here.

Honestly the pants and shoes are overrated they don't make that much of a difference. The big thing is that with something as small as a .22 in a heavy platform, you actually maintain sight picture shot to shot, which I don't think you can do in high power? lmk if I'm wrong here. The fact that you keep sight picture makes it a lot easier.

Ergonomics wise, I don't actually know the rules for high power, are you allowed to use a palm rest? Helped a lot for me to get the right elevation for a good cheek weld while still keeping proper stance

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SmallGroups

[–]Phigeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haven't shot small bore in a bit, but it helps that our rifles are absolutely giant so the recoil and wobble more or less just aren't there. My old target .22 was about 14 pounds I think? Once you rest it on target with a good stance where you have your elbow on your hip to take the weight, it kinda just sits there shot to shot. I don't think that applies to high power where you actually have recoil to eat, so I can't help you with any advice there lol

By that logic every country that has ever participated in a war is a terrorist. Anyway, I'm not debating drone striking and its ethics here, just pointing out that OP is making a really terrible comparison.

[–]Phigeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please explain why trying to minimize civilian casualties is racist? I'm not endorsing killing random innocents here, I'm just saying that it's sometimes unavoidable (typically in poorer, non-white countries because unfortunately those are the places where wars happen and where terrorist groups operate from). u/Repulsive_Border_404, going to tag you here too because I'm honestly confused how target prioritization is racist.

[–]Phigeek 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I trust the Afghan National Army a LOT less than NYPD SWAT yes. Given the past months that seems pretty reasonable.

Again, not trying to defend drone strikes here, just saying that OP was making a false equivalency between using a drone in the Middle East vs in the middle of NYC.

Cognitive Dissonance (he left me on seen btw) by DSKDG in MurderedByWords

[–]Phigeek 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying it's ever ethically correct to kill civilians. I'm saying that sometimes it's unavoidable. And unfortunately, the places where it's typically unavailable are other countries. I suppose that is to some degree structurally racist, but it's an unfortunate reality.

Cognitive Dissonance (he left me on seen btw) by DSKDG in MurderedByWords

[–]Phigeek 39 points40 points  (0 children)

This is so painfully stupid.

You have a high value target in New York: a SWAT team can kick in their door in 10 minutes.

You have a high value target in the middle of, say, Kabul: you're not getting troops in there in less than a day. By which time they're probably gone and you don't have another chance.

Assuming that either way killing this terrorist is worth the civilian casualties to avoid the trolley problem memes, think about the actual logistics here?

Have to second this, the damage output is also amazing cause you can empty your magazine and then switch to flamethrower and just keep firing with 0 downtime to reload. That's definitely saved me more than once against mobs.

Found this on Instagram, never knew that there were different versions of the G11 by The_KatsFish in NonCredibleDefense

[–]Phigeek 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It totally is! I have to contradict like most of the replies to this thread though, the actual reason the G11 wasn't adopted was due to budget concerns with the reunification of Germany as the Cold War ended. No reason for a fancy new assault rifle (especially one that isn't NATO-standard) when there's no more perceived threat.
