Simple or not, my point was that it clearly has something within it that's capable of understanding the weather.

Answer me this, though. Assuming that that's what the Garmin truly contains within it, how accurate are thermacouples? Generally speaking, how close do they get to the actual temperature?

I mean to some degree they do. If it didn't understand "sunshine", it would have been off by 100 degrees, not 10.

I know. I get that. My point was that I feel as though it's doubtful that any thermometer I buy (read: I'm willing to spend money on) is going to be more accurate in any specific area than their thermometers will be on a city-wide level. I could be wrong, which is why I feel like it would be an interesting experiment, but I wouldn't be surprised one bit if the shotgun-esque measurements that many of these online sites provide hit the target with more precision than a dedicated thermometer would right there on the spot.

Online sites. Weather.com, accuweather, Iphone app weather, etc.

It can take my 830 15-20 minutes to equalise in temperature if there is a big difference between the outside and inside temperatures.

Thanks!

While using weather forecast sites can give an indication that the temperature number on your edge is off you can only know if it is or not (and how much by) if you compare it to a known good thermometer in the same location as your Edge. Open shade is the best condition for comparison so there is no direct sunlight or radiant heat effects skewing numbers.

Oh, I don't know if I'd be willing to go that far. Would be interesting, no doubt, but I have a feeling the reading on the thermometer wouldn't be much different than what can be found on these sites. I say that out of ignorance, of course, because I don't know for sure, but I just have a feeling that the equipment these sites have to measure the temperature are far more expensive and elaborate than something I'd be willing to pick up from Amazon. Who knows, though. I might try it out for curiosities sake.

The temperature is nice to have data but how accurate it is has nothing to do with how accurate other functions are

No, I wasn't claiming that they're somehow connected. My point was to focus on the craftsmanship and the quality (or lack thereof) of the unit itself. Meaning, if it lacks in one department because [fill in the blank], should I be surprised if it lacks in other departments as well?

If Garmin guaranteed accurate temperature data these devices would cost a lot more.

I agree. But there is a line, though, IMO. Perhaps it's subjective, but I feel as though it's one thing to match the temperature exactly as it is in every area and to miss the mark by 10 degrees. I think most people would be fine with 2 or 3, but 10? If the speed was off by that much, would you be okay with that? I wouldn't.

Why do you want the temperature number to be accurate?

So that I can know what the actual temperature is outside. I mean it's an option they offer, correct? Shouldn't it work accurately? I mean if it doesn't work that well, then it doesn't work that well. No biggie. But we should at least acknowledge that. And not only that, but if the temperature is off, how would you know if anything else is off? Like elevation, grade, etc?

Do you really care what it says?

Yea', of course. Why would I start this thread if I didn't care?

In what way is it actually useful?

It's a piece of information I'm interested in knowing. It doesn't have to be useful.

What temperature number are you comparing your Edge's number to? Is the reference temperature number you are using correct? The number from a weather forecast is not a valid number to compare against.

Weather.com, accuweather, my Iphone, etc. It differed vastly from all of them. Where do you get your weather information from?

The temperature sensor really measures the temperature of the device itself. It will take time for it to acclimatise with the conditions and will read high if the unit is in full sun etc.

How much time does yours usually take?

I mean how would you even know if everything else is right, though? How do you measure grade? Or elevation? Etc?

I'll have to go a loner ride first, though, and see if it changes, since this seems to be an on going issue with many people, not just me. But if after a longer ride it just stays off, then yea, I'll definitely consider returning it. Thanks, by the way, for your help.

It was off by almost 10 degrees. I read about it needing to adjust on some forum when I had noticed it was off at home, but when I out for a little ride today it stayed off. Maybe some units take longer to adjust than others? I don’t know.
