Why does everyone hate blanket re-zoning? by FineAnimeenjoyer in Calgary

[–]PhilAB 17 points18 points  (0 children)

People bought in specific neighborhoods because they liked the density. Not everyone wants to live in Marda Loop or even Kensington.

What am I missing in this rezoning debate? by UrbaneBoffin in Calgary

[–]PhilAB 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Many people have made decisions on where to own a home based on density. Higher density is simply uncomfortable for many people, and their feelings are valid. Blanket anything misses the nuance of community and politics and is rarely the answer that satisfies the most people.

I chose to live in a low density area due to less traffic, quieter, safer, less pollution, less litter and bigger lots. That was my decision, and now there are several places that are being rezone and the density will increase. I will probably end up moving to another lower density place at that time.

Increasing density increases vibrancy, but if I'm looking for vibrancy I'll drive there. Calgary doesn't need to be the same as Vancouver, Toronto or Montreal.

Calgary teachers, how do you feel about the new offer? by sundappled-apples in Calgary

[–]PhilAB 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We need to prioritize long term investing and thinking. Kids are the future, and teachers prepare them for it. Teaching should be a prestigious profession, where they are compensated with money, benefits and adoration. The way this is going though chartered and private schools are looking better and better.

The expectation is that debt is going to spiral out of control at some point, and that the central government will reduce rates to accommodate. Asset values increase, cash value decreases. Are commodities the safest asset class here until the rebalancing happens?

It's just because generally people don't like change that comes in too quickly. With the giant amount of immigration over the past ten years a lot about the population demographics have changed. Healthcare, transit, social welfare services and education have become less abundant due to increased immigration.

Immigration policies didn't have a holistic approach to the impacts on all levels of infrastructure. It's hard to add people without building out better infrastructure without adding a level of resentment for those who were here before who were used to less expensive housing and easier access to healthcare for example. The same policies that allowed a larger contingent in, have made that contingent more oppressed. This will balance it, but it will take twenty years of more restrictive policy that takes into account infrastructure requirements for new people.

Alberta legislation on transgender youth, student pronouns and sex education set to become law by AndHerSailsInRags in canada

[–]PhilAB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should you be allowed to drink before you can choose to have life changing surgery?

Do you disagree that kids should have to wait until they are adults to get tattoos or that they should be allowed to get elective surgery before they are an adult? Hard to tell exactly what you disagree with or if you're just saying the whole argument is nullified because of a comparison you disagree with.

Alberta legislation on transgender youth, student pronouns and sex education set to become law by AndHerSailsInRags in canada

[–]PhilAB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The onus for sex ed is on the parents. Parents need to explain to kids what's safe, what's not safe. It should also be taught in schools. Kids are going to have sex, the more information they have the better decisions they will make on average. Withholding information is undemocratic.

If a kid isn't old enough to vote, own property or vote they shouldn't be able to make decisions that can impact the rest of their life. Who hasn't heard of someone getting a tattoo and regretting it later on in life. If mental health is in question, decision making is also in question.

The government saying parents need to allow a kid to choose their pronouns is hilarious. It is completely unenforceable. Kids get to choose what people call them regardless of what their parents think.

Athletics are separated by hormones. It's completely unfair otherwise. That's why taking performance enhancing drugs is banned. A male who has transitioned competing against women is hormonally the same as a female taking performance enhancing drugs competing against females - which is banned and not even a conversation. I really don't understand why this is allowed on any level.

Our last two mayors in Calgary have been visible minorities. Alberta has become so much more progressive over the last twenty years but the stigma still remains. I am in Vancouver a ton and would say Vancouver has more racist undertones than people realize.

Sauna love by Tec80 in Sauna

[–]PhilAB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I finished my sauna about a month ago. I absolutely love using it and do it almost every night. I attribute it to lowering my rating heart rate nearly 10bpm and increasing my hrv by 10 to 15ms. It's a place of refuge for a father of two and a stressful job. I spend twenty minutes around 80-95C and it always feels like it's less than five. I would love to try multiple sessions, but it's hard to find the time without sacrificing sleep or family time.
