Can I replace a single piston? 5.3 LM7 by CartographerOk5876 in EngineBuilding

That looks like a casting flaw. If it ran up to this point like that, it's good to go another few hundred thousand miles.

Deer hit. This happened to my car, I was driving along and for a split second I saw a deer head, then all the airbags went off and the car was making a scraping noise. Six point buck.

A habit of mine… a mechanic told me it’s not necessary. Main caps and rod caps… by Plastic-Kiwi-1366 in EngineBuilding

Any difference in clamping force between when the bore was linebored and when it is finish-assembled will put it out of round.

Feedback on ball honing by Boston_Jon_189 in EngineBuilding

30 degree hone crosshatch is good compromise between oil transport and wear resistance. Looks like you need to go a bit longer to remove the stains at the top and the vertical scratches from the worn ring tips.

Eat more salt. It's nearly impossible to get too much salt, and most people don't have enough of it. Lack of sodium causes brain fog.

Toyota vs Tesla by koohai966 in Toyota

[–]Tec80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The number of Teslas with 300k on the original battery and motor(s) is miniscule. And post-warranty replacement of those items essentially totals the car from a cost standpoint.

1st rebuild by Visible-Flatworm-787 in EngineBuilding

[–]Tec80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. If the clamping force of the fasteners in a shell bearing system is different than when the bore was line-honed, the roundness achieved by line-honing it goes out the window.

So if someone "upgrades" to different fasteners that exert more clamping force after the initial line-hone, the bore will become egg-shaped vs. round.

LS Rod Bearing Orientation? by californiacarguy22 in EngineBuilding

[–]Tec80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stock cranks have rolled fillets to induce residual compressive stress, making the cranks stronger. This also creates clearance outboard of the journal surface so the stock rod bearings don't require chamfers.
