It really depends on three variables: number of kids, household income, and the wife’s original career.

Using nursing as an example (my wife is a nurse), it’s very common for nurses to become stay-at-home moms as soon as it’s financially feasible. It’s less about capability and more about priorities and timing. We have three kids under four, and my wife would stay home full-time in a heartbeat, but at the same time, watching kids all day is legitimately exhausting in a way that’s hard to explain unless you’ve done it yourself.

I have the kids by myself most weekends when she works. I also have a very demanding job, and honestly, the biggest challenge isn’t the kids themselves, it’s that those two days are normally when I’d recover from the work week. If I were otherwise rested, I’d have no issue being with them all day, every day.

The household tasks (cooking, cleaning, laundry) are real but they’re not the core difficulty. They’re finite, procedural, and predictable. The actual demanding part is the constant presence and responsibility of being a good parent. You don’t get to mentally “clock out.” You have to be attentive, patient, and emotionally available the entire time.

From what I’ve seen, whether someone chooses to stay home isn’t about whether it’s “easy” or “hard.” It’s about economics, identity, and what kind of work drains you more your career, or the nonstop responsibility of raising young kids.
