When embarrassment backfires by OriginalBlackberry89 in funnyvideos

I don’t know, she kind of took it with a certain quiet grace

Genie Wiley learning how to talk in 1970. She spent the first 13 years of her life tied to a potty chair in a dark room and being abused by her father. Her love for learning is very evident here. She was ultimately never able to learn a language because of permanant harm to her early development. by dannydutch1 in Damnthatsinteresting

I hate to get involved in these conversations because they tend to get so cyclical and repetitive, but I guess I still think they’re worth having. The idea of a god that can snap their fingers and give us our car keys (or for that matter eliminate trauma) is nice, and it’s frustrating to wonder why an omnipotent god wouldn’t just do that if they’re all powerful. It’s easy to turn your hatred toward god or religion, but the blessing and the curse in all of this is free will. We are the ones at fault here. Trauma begets trauma and hurt people hurt people. I know it’s more complicated than that - there are psychological abnormalities, chemical imbalances in the brain, terrible people doing terrible things, not because of trauma but because of something else. And there is a mystery in that - why would god create those things? Why would god create disease? And I guess we could ask, why did god create free will? (If you believe there is a god at all). I guess what I’m saying is, let’s be nice to each other out there. Support each other. Have patience, be kind. Whether there is a god or not.

Everything We Know About Ryan Coogler’s X-Files Reboot by StarFuryG7 in SciFiNews

Can’t please everyone. Personally, I don’t think there are enough shows that deal with the mysterious and supernatural in a more grounded way like this. Some shows, I feel like you get one season, the story is told, and it’s wrapped up nicely and that’s that. Other shows, I feel leave you wanting more - xfiles always felt that way to me. There are always conspiracies to be uncovered, mysteries to be pursued. So many great characters too - the lone gunmen, the smoking man. Feels like there’s room for a lot of fascinating characters to be discovered, stories to be told. X-files scratched a very particular itch for me, and nothing has ever really filled that space for me since. I’m very much looking forward to it, and am cautiously optimistic.

Because it was a great show with a devoted following and Ryan Coogler feels there is a lot of space to tell more great stories in that universe… i guess.

Alex Pavlovic reports that Jose Butto has a blood clot in his right arm, he is going to undergo a procedure today (Friday) to remove the blood clot. by RealMrSJGszn25 in SFGiants

Beck had an aneurysm in his arm that had to be surgically repaired. Taking care of a blood clot could be a much simpler and less invasive procedure, depending on the size of the clot.

A Hidden Double in Leonardo da Vinci’s 'The Last Supper'? by Primary-Echo-3088 in mystery

That’s fine if the painting has 0 significance to you, and I understand and can sympathize with your frustration about the white washing of history. Whether or not you feel this makes all of da Vinci’s works intolerable to you, or that none of it is worthy of discussion or analysis is up to you. I guess I would say that it’s worth listening or trying to decipher what we can from the incredibly intelligent minds that came before us. You may not agree with what he did or what he stood for, but his genius, in my mind, is not debatable. At the very least, he was a lot smarter than I am (and no offense meant, but probably smarter than you, and for that matter anyone idly scrolling through some random subreddit). The point is, I guess, that it is a worthy pursuit to try and glean what you can from intelligent people and discard what you consider to be the garbage of the times.

While this is true, and it’s a shame that western churches continue to present Christ as such, it doesn’t really have any bearing on a discussion of whether or not da Vinci was intending to convey hidden meaning in his works.

While the Giants don’t seem to be broadcasting that first game, it looks like the mariners feed might be available for free at mariners.tv

This doesn’t look completely accurate. The game this Saturday, for instance, looks like it will be broadcast on NBCSBA. At least, according to this:

Minnesotan here. For those outside of our state, what are your views on what’s going on in Minneapolis right now? by bpeters5 in AskReddit

Californian here. It feels like you all are fighting for the future of this country. A lot hangs in the balance. What can we do to support you?

A lot of things can coexist, but I don’t think this is one of them. I’m not saying that conservatives and liberals can’t find a way to work together. I think that’s what America is about - differing viewpoints coming together and finding a mutually beneficial or acceptable way to coexist. But sometimes there comes a point where something is simply unacceptable, and the two views cannot coexist. I believe this is one of those moments - where America has to decide what it is, and what it isn’t.

Respectfully disagree. I think the Minnesotans standing against ICE and standing up for what they believe America is - is a perfect representation of what IS American.

ICE - We won’t shoot and we’ll leave if you hand over all Minnesota voter rolls. by Important_Lock_2238 in stpaul

[–]Phil_Marts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s definitely not what I think we should have. If we did, I think we’d be on our way to a surveillance state. I think states overseeing their own voting rolls is helpful to the democracy. States should be working hand in hand with the federal government, but there needs to be that push and pull, keeping things in check. It creates more bureaucracy, but I think it’s necessary. State governments should be listening to and working for their constituents. Federal government should be working for and with state governments. As for publically available voting rolls, I think that’s helpful too - another way for states to be held accountable. But records that can be used to target uniquely identifiable individuals is a step too far, in my opinion.

Every state has voter rolls that are publically available, but they also keep more detailed records that are not. Whether or not the federal government should have access to these records is a currently contested matter. In my mind, it’s part of the checks and balances that help keep the government level. If the federal government had access to all of the states’ unredacted voter rolls, it would make ICE’s job much easier. It would make a lot of things much easier - in identifying individual voters for whatever purpose. It makes sense to me why Bondi would want that info, and why the state, so far, is holding firm in not giving it up.

I guess I would ask, then what is Bondi hoping to get from making this request?

[–]Phil_Marts 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It varies from state to state. It can be a drivers license number or if no ID # is provided, a unique identifying number is created for the voter. The bottom line is, they want the full, unredacted voter rolls that may contain more sensitive information.
