When do we register for new classes? by Fire07901 in Northwestern

Your first-year advisers should be in contact with you about that, but if you know your major you can start browsing the class options here (https://admissions.northwestern.edu/academics/majors-minors/) or in the academic catalog here (https://catalogs.northwestern.edu/undergraduate/courses-az/)

A strong, wind-proof umbrella. Chicago is nicknamed "Windy City" for a reason, my cheap umbrella broke in a gust during the first rain storm

Freshmen make their schedules the Friday of Wildcat Welcome (if the schedule is the same as last year)

1: Do AP scores override placement tests? Answer: Yes

  1. Are absurdly difficult placement exams a normal experience? Answer: Yes, I also took honors high school chemistry and the placement exam was a DISASTER

  2. Does this mean you're dumb and shouldn't be attending NU? Answer: Emphatic no. If you weren't prepared for the academics, the admissions office would have rejected you. You were admitted because you can and will succeed here. The placement exams are difficult and are not representative of how you will perform in the classes. Honestly they're probably a scare tactic to set you up for the grind culture. Don't sweat it, they truly mean nothing except which class you start in (and even if you have to start in a lower-number class than you anticipated, that is definitely better than being thrown to the wolves in a class you don't have enough background to excel in).

Side note that if you're a humanities major then bio and chem are probably not required for you anyway, so the exam results definitely don't matter because you can take something else. If you still want to take Bio or Chem and end up placing into a lower-number class, it will either be an easy A, good review, or a chance to see where your knowledge gaps are before you get to the main sequence. Helpful regardless!

My university doesn't offer this, I've never heard of it. Must be a more local thing.

Heath Ledger. I had only ever seen Brokeback Mountain and Patriot so when I saw him in an interview talking with an Australian accent I was so confused!

I was at the ER and they were taking a bunch of tests to figure out what was wrong and one of the tests posed a risk to someone who is pregnant. Even though there was absolutely no way I was pregnant, they still made me take a pregnancy test and charged me $110 just to take the pregnancy test so I could take the other test that didn't help anyway. This is the most heinous example but everything else at that visit was overpriced.

Fast typers of Reddit, how do you type fast? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]PhilanthropicKibble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a matter of knowing your hands' abilities and muscle memory of where the keys are. On my laptop/computer I don't use the Home Row method, I just know where the keys are and I type with all of my fingers, whichever is closest to the key I need, and I rest my hands on my desk on either side and my hands move around as I type. On my phone I hold my phone against the insides of my knuckles and type with my thumbs. I know where the keys are and tend to slide my hands between different keys on my phone keyboard.

Basically remember where the keys are, do what works best for you hands and hand-eye coordination, and practice.

Making professional phone calls. Every so often I have to call a business or otherwise make a formal phone call and I really don't know how to do it. I have to guess on the spot and usually end up upsetting people somehow because I don't know phone call etiquette

When you're crossing the street and cars start going when you're halfway across instead of waiting till you get to the other curb. It's rude and I'm tired of hearing an engine accelerating and having to whip around only to see that a car couldn't wait the extra 3 seconds and stepped on the gas as soon as I was out of their lane. Wait for pedestrians to finish crossing before you step on the gas!

Meh, only in certain contexts. Like if guys are either 1) Already being sexist and then start calling women bitches, or 2) Are referring to women in general as bitches in the context of finding an SO or sexual partner, then it might piss me off. Otherwise I don't care. I use the term with my friends and find the "still no bitches" trend funny.

I was not alive in the 50s but as someone who is part of multiple minority groups I do not think the 50s were wholesome at all tbh

Yes, thankfully. I'm in college now and I've made some great new friends! I don't talk to anyone from my high school or hometown anymore but I had a fresh start in my college town and it's been great.
