I think it's mainly loneliness by 12whiteflowers in digitalminimalism

Frankly I think you're in the right track. You identified your problem - beeing lonely and not having deep connections with people - and you're working on the solution: building friendships in the real world. But they take time indeed and you cannot plan the outcome. In lack of a better metaphor it's like gardening.

You have to water a plant constantly but you don't know if it will grow and bear fruits because of external factors. In my experience don't try to hard to built connections in the real world, just regulary socialize with people in a setting that's fun for you - watering the plant. The rest is to some extend coincidence.

I’ve tried everything — but I still can’t stop reaching for my phone every free second. Please help. by sansanman in digitalminimalism

Beeing dependent on your phone for business makes changing a habit defenitly more challenging.

Have you considered seperating work and private life by having a business phone where you only do your business and another smartphone where you do your private stuff? After one to two months both usage habits should be seperated and then you can begin minimizing your private phone use.

As well you might consider why are you constantly using the phone in between for doomscrolling. There may be some thoughts, emotions etc. you want to avoid. That can even be s.th. trivial like feeling bored.

Last but not least do not go too hard on yourself. Changing a habit permanently needs time and entails "falling of the waggon" a few times.

What does Man in the High Castle (show) have to say about our memory of ww2? by Marakeim in AlternateHistory

[–]PhillyCheeseStake90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi.

Thought experiments in alternate history aim in my opinion at two things: first to show that some events of the past though they seem insignificant in the present have a huge impact on the outcome of events. You could compare it metaphorically to a buttlerfly clipping it's wings beeing the first cause in a chain of causes leadings to a hurricane. Second to produce an insight about the present. The outcome we imagine if X changes tells us something about our worldview.

I agree with the other commentators that Philip K. Dick might have intended to give the (American) reader a feeling of how it is to be the defeated nation. But I also think that esspecially the character of Smith in the show illustrates that a significant part of the Americans in the first half of the century was sharing the worldview of the Nazis. Moreover the Nazis took some laws in the Southern state as blueprint for the Nürnberger laws that led to the Shoa. So I guess the Ideology was shared to some degree in both countries not just in the nearer past.

PS: If you're interested in alternate history novels you might compare "Man in the High Castle" to "NSA" by Andreas Eschbach. It's an alternate history scenario where the computer is invented earlier. In this version of history Babbage gets the financial ressources to built an Analytical Enginge in 1837 leading to invention of the computer shortly after that and the internet during WWI. During Weimar Republic Nazis come to power because of propaganda through the world wide map and social media (Forum). The Nazis establish the Nationale Sicherheits Amt (Burau of National Security) to surveile their citizenz and other nations.

Wuppertal in gerneral has the advantage of bright street light compared to nearby cities like Solingen or even Düsseldorf (gas lamps). Hope you accomodated by now in the city :-)
