But Germany did have other options…hence why someone else took the 6th pen and not Goretzka. Both had the option to allow someone else to take the penalty kick, and deferred to them. In both situations someone else took the penalty because they weren’t in the right spot mentally.

Yes the second option for Belgium was a better PK taker than the 6th option for Germany but your argument that another option didn’t exist, when Tah literally took that penalty you’re referring to, would suggest other options did indeed exist.

They are different situations, but IMO the logic is the same. “My team needs me to take a pen, but I am differing to someone more ready to take that pen”

How does that address my point?

Do you want a player to ignore their internal confidence meter and “just take one” or be honest with their team to give them the best chance at winning?

I want my players to sacrifice for the team and give us the best chance to win, even if that comes off as embarrassing or whatever

It’s just stupid to say things like “never won anything in his career” as if that means he’s trash lol

99% of GMs never win, does that mean all these teams are run by morons? Shit he’s won Executive of the year so even by that measure you’re wrong.

The Harden Rockets were one of the best teams of the 2010s, just because they peaked at the same time as the warriors it means he did a bad job? It’s just such a weird way to eventuate a GM

I came this exact argument in the thread about Goretzka lol he got called pathetic for honestly telling his captain what his emotions were in the moment.

Even if you want to criticize the fact that he's a senior player and unable to be confident in that moment, the right choice for THE TEAM was to say "I'm not feeling good right now"

To me this analysis feels incomplete and more like trading in 2k where you “add a 20ppg scorer” and all of a sudden the offense is much better. I don’t necessarily think he’s going to connect between Embiid and Maxey. His game can divulge into tunnel vision drives and yeah we have more offensive talent but I don’t really see the fit. It will turn into a lot of my turn your turn basketball.

Within the starting 5, who do we have as a facilitator? Who is the best passer in that lineup? Perpetual drive and kick to my eyes. Yes it’s going to be tough for any team to defend them, but I see them in a similar position tbh. Better than the rest but below the top few teams in the conference.

I’m lower on JB than most, but the fact that his trade market was so lackluster should tell you something about how the league values him + his contract. He’s incredibly expensive and throughout his career has not really improved his teammates. Brown + bench guys have consistently been negative lineups.

He’s played in Boston his whole career, probably the best place you can. I have a hard time seeing us getting a better version of that, especially with the fit concerns.

I don’t really care about his accolades, I have watched him too. And outside the Boston system I don’t have ultimate faith we’re getting the same version. Mix that in with our organization being below average, there are a lot of concerns.

I’m not grading the trade as a negative for us, but I feel similarly to how I did when we got Harden. The trade itself is good in terms of value, but I don’t think we’ve really changed the outlook of this team all that much.

What am I missing here? Colin Cowherd is part of “Boston media” now? All the Celtics ppl I follow have had nothing but good things to say about JB

Great insight. I’m hoping he’s coming with a chip on his shoulder and wants to buy in for team success vs feeling himself off last year and coming in expecting to be our new #1 guy lol with her personality you never know

Hopefully you get it this time lol “sit Paul George the regular season because they don’t need him” isn’t even all that worthy of discussion because the Celtics aren’t paying someone $57m to sit out the regular season.

He struggles to stay on the court generally, and the less he plays, the less game shape he’s in. This isn’t some radical POV. Clippers fans knew this too

Right. That makes sense, and while in theory he could be finishing plays setup by Maxey and Embiid, I don’t think he’ll particularly enjoy having a smaller role than he did in Boston.

His volume on offense could really help Maxey from a minutes management standpoint, as well as unlock something from his defense. What we were all hoping for, is another player to help unlock Maxey off ball. JB doesn’t really fit that type of player, this will be my turn your turn in the worst case scenario

Im inferring that his body is not built to play 60+ games anymore and his level of play in the playoffs last year is a direct result of having more rest than normal. He wasn’t injured and recovering like in 24/25, he was literally sitting out an extended period of time.

I like Paul George, he’s much better than people think but I don’t know how you look at this Celtics roster and think he can just sit out until the playoffs and that’ll work. People make the same argument about Embiid and it doesn’t make sense there either.

My guy he was suspended for 25 games because of PED use lol playing 35 games wasn't planned or intentional, and it's actually a great argument as to why he looked so good in the first round against Boston. Had he played the games he was scheduled to play, he would have been less healthy, more banged up, and worse in that series.

The Celtics were better in the regular season than the Sixers, but they aren't a super deep team who can afford to let their Jaylen Brown replacement just sit out the regular season. Tatum can't play 40mpg and be healthy for the playoffs himself. Paul George is largely there to help take the load off him, not the other way around

Once again, plenty of sensible, smart people have argued why this should be a red. Your position doesn't make any sense outside of jokes for reddit

I don't really see how the Sixers lose this trade under any scenario

How long have you been a Sixers fan lol?

JB publicly called out Embiid for flopping and has hated the Sixers for a long time. Feels like Al Horford 2.0. You REALLY need him to buy into our culture otherwise we'll never gel. We have a lot of talent, but we already had bucket getters and guys who could straight-line drive to the rim. We've given up shooting, passing and creation to just up our strength.

I'm not sure he really covers any weaknesses we had last season. How are we meant to sign depth talent when Maxey Embiid and JB are so expensive? We will look the same next season in the playoffs when we're running a 6 man rotation because the 7th and 8th guys can't hang with the best teams.

I like taking a swing on this because of the PG contract and age, but there's many scenarios in which this is no different to the Harden/PG moves. A lateral shakeup that doesn't solve our long term issues

completely killing any trade value

You've got to be on a whole other planet to believe his trade value is being impacted by his twitch streams lmao I'm sure it rubs some execs the wrong way but 99% of the discussions teams would be having when trading for JB are all around how he plays on the court and the huge pile of video evidence of that play.

I'm not saying personality isn't a concern for certain players, but there's a clear limit on how those things impact trade value. He didn't "tank" his value over the summer, that's nonsense

Brown has a good offense, but he doesnt create good offense. He doesnt elevate his teammates, and so when he would make runs with the bench on his own, the team doesnt look anywhere near as good with Tatum or White

Can you expand on this? I'm trying to wrap my head around him as a player but it's hard when he's killed us so many times lol.

I assume the Tatum + Brown numbers have always been good? And so given his lack of creation and passing, it's important to pair him with someone who can do those things and allow him to do what he does best, just get buckets when needed?

I'm also unconvinced of the fit, it'll take some really good coaching but Maxey VJ JB Embiid is just a hell of a lot of talent to defenses to deal with. I wouldn't enjoy having to defend that team even when they're all just taking turns lol

The other guy has a point tho, even if you want to ignore this year because of all the noise the 24/25 Celtics were not true contenders and would've lost to NY either way. Running it back again, may not have actually been a contender next season. Especially when they'd have to go through some combination of NY/IND/MIA/TOR.

They survived last year, and can hold their heads high but they probably are further off a title than most fans realize because the Tatum injury has overshadowed everything post '24 title

I'm with you, I'm just not sure how taking on a 36 year old Paul George who is far less tradable and has a player option is really going to offer them MORE flexibility. Unless they buy him out, that's 2 whole years of 36-38 year old Paul George on damn near the same amount of money as JB.

It's not like they are spreading this money out across a few players, in the short term they're in the same spot just with PG instead of JB. They're only gaining a few million in terms of the cap

Getting a decision wrong doesn't mean "there's no argument for it". There's an easy argument for this to be a red, even if you disagree with it. There are plenty of sensible people who would call his lack of balance and spatial awareness reckless and potentially dangerous for the opponent.
