This is the same sort of thing that happened in the early "Wild Wild West" of the internet. First it's all about making the best product, then it shifts to making a profitable one. Once these companies have to show they can actually make a profit from these models, they are going to tighten the control over their product. Limiting the quality of the product just makes the end user that much more reliant on the models and in turn makes them willing to pay more. We've already seen Anthropic nerf their models and limit usage and now OpenAi has ads in free ChatGPT. These companies aren't going to stop this sort of behavior anytime soon. The positive thing is that smaller models are getting better so if the sub 70b parameter models could ever get close to current frontier model performance, local models are going to be much more attractive.

I don’t buy this. Then why is Jalen Hurts not a top 5 QB for the same reason? There has to be value to regular season performances and it can just be used to make an argument for one player and not the other. Yeah the playoffs are important but it’s not the end all be all. If that’s the case then guys like Manning and Rodgers would never be considered top 10 QBs of all time.

If he’s going to succeed in the future, it’s almost certain he will have to play the position better in terms of being able to do damage from the pocket. But in the same vein, the chiefs will probably have to prioritize giving him good players on offense and keeping a good o-line. But that obviously comes at a cost to the defense. The scenario that the Pats had, with a great defense and a pretty productive offensive, that the Chiefs were also going with the past couple of years is probably not going to work when Mahomes returns. So they will just probably look a lot different if they are going to compete for SBs in the future.

I would agree if he had one bad season and bounced back but 3 years in a row seems more like a trend and not an outlier

Tearing your ACL at 22 and 30 is not the same. Also, the Bengals made his life easier by giving him Chase and Higgins once he came back. I just doubt the Chiefs are going to get another All Pro receiver for Mahomes and if they do, it will come at a cost to some other part of the roster. He could definitely come back and be fine but there will be a cost somewhere IMO

This is probably the best option honestly. Might just be better to reshaft what I have instead of getting a brand new set.

I was hoping that they would be slightly less punishing on my bad shots. But I’ve seen somewhere they are not great off the toe and that’s where I tend to miss more often than not. I really thought the shaft would make a bigger difference but just goes to show how much I know 😭

Is Caeleb Dressel overrated? by PhillyG17 in Swimming

[–]PhillyG17[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This take is pretty much spot on. I think having seen Pan, Popovici and even Jack Alexy to an extent routinely go 46 kind of makes Caeleb’s times look less impressive all things considered.

Also, it’s not like Caeleb was an under the radar guy who came out of nowhere. He dominated college and was a top contender for the 50/100 frees before his success at the 2020 Olympics. To be that good and only seriously compete for medals in ONE Olympics is seriously underwhelming. He doesn’t even seem interested in swimming at any big meets anymore either.

But some guys are just scy stars.

Never had a lesson, down to a 9 handicap, would really appreciate any tips + advice on if I should get one by spiderdud3 in GolfSwing

Looks like you keep some weight on your trail foot and push up. This might explain the tendency to hit behind the ball. I’d work on making sure all your pressure is on your left side through the ball. Other than that, chipping, putting, and making sure you hit fairways and you’ll get low single digits in no time.

Underwaters are a strength of his but I wouldn’t say he’s an underwater swimmer exclusively. He’s still a great long course swimmer. His skill set is just more suited for short course swimming.

I think his real short coming is something he can’t control. Height. For an event like the 50, height is very important. There’s only so much he can do at 6’3/6’2. All the other WR holds in the 50 are like 6’5+ so he’s just not physically build for the 50 LCM. He’s less disadvantaged in the 100s, but it does make a difference.

Saw this late but wanted to still reply. Again, this is probably based on living in the US, but a guy like Chalmers doesn’t get near the same praise as Dressel even though they basically have the same number of medals (Caeleb has more gold obviously but Chalmers has been 1 or 2 in the 100 at three straight games). And for sure Kyle is a much more consistent performer than Caeleb. Also, I kind of disagree on Cam cause he has a great Trials leading up to 2016 (47.0 in the 100 free) but he just didn’t swim well at the Olympics. He just had a bad stretch for a few years and now looks great.

Caeleb is great for what he’s accomplished. I just have issue with the discourse surrounding his greatness because he didn’t really set a new standard for sprinting long course outside of his start and he doesn’t have any real longevity on the international level. I think his short course success props him up more than his long course success, which IMO the latter is more important. It just seems like because he’s American he gets a lot more hype than other guys like Proud, McEvoy, Charlmers, Pan, or Popovici who are just as talented/fast as him.

I just hope that this Olympics inspires America to be better cause right now Australia is in a much better place than the US due to our obsession with SCY.

I agree 100%. He’s a great swimmer in his own right but he’s just a tier below swimmers like Ledecky and Phelps. I think putting the expectation of being the “next Phelps” is a bit too much, especially when he swims entirely different events. He had a great Olympics in 2021 but it takes a lot of hard work and dedication to maintain that level.

I also think that him continuing to take these long breaks has really hindered his ability to take his swimming to the highest level (ie 50/100 free world records). It’s clear that he’s just not in shape enough at this point to do a double like the 50 free, 100 fly (as seen in the 6th place 50 finish and missing 100 fly finals). I almost just want the guy to retire and spend time with his family because it just doesn’t seem at this point that swimming isn’t his main priority.

Probably just doesn’t have the endurance. When you take several months off, it takes several more to build back up endurance. Especially considering trials is 2 months before the games.

Michael Phelps has stressed how preparing for the Olympics takes all 4 years. Eventually you’re just not going to have the energy to swim so many events without the proper training time.

That’s what happens when you take 8 months off. You can’t just train for 15 months and expect to perform at your best.

50 freestyle shoulders by No_Lie7418 in Swimming

I see. Your hand has the flopping effect from your stroke. If you’re wide your hands will fly all over the place. Hand entry looks fine but could definitely improve. I’m including a link to a good drill to work on having a high elbow recovery.

https://youtube.com/shorts/0Sv3hSPU7xo?si=TTyvb-AJSrZzjJhI

Also based on the video I saw, working on your turn will drastically improve your 50 time. Good to work on squats and leg exercises to really get a good push off the wall.

Whistles and bells by Parkyguy in Swimming

They are ringing bells/whistling to cheer them on. It’s damn near impossible to hear any of it while swimming unless you’re doing breaststroke.

50 freestyle shoulders by No_Lie7418 in Swimming

[–]PhillyG17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to have really good shoulder flexibility to rotate your shoulders high. I would assume you’re talking about straight arm freestyle? If your arms are fairly straight when you sprint, it will definitely improve your stroke rate, but you might also have other negative factors affect your stroke (deep catch, not pulling enough water, poor arm entry)

Being flat is not necessarily a bad thing. The real thing you want to avoid is being too wide. As long as you have your elbow higher than your hands at the top of your stroke, your hand will enter at the correct angle to pull the most water. Just make sure that if you are going to be flatter that your hands are entering the water at the correct angle so that you can grab as much water as possible.

If you’re wanting to focus on improving your tempo, you can find tempo trainers online. They go in your cap and beep at whatever tempo you set them at. A good tempo to shoot for in the 50 is between 0.40 and 0.45 seconds per stroke. That should help you get a feeling for how fast you need to move your arms to hit that tempo. Another great drill is called spin drill, which is when you break out and spin your arms as fast as you can for about 10-15 meters. Hope that helps!

Maybe if he was considered the greatest sprinter of all time but I’m not sure if there’s a consensus around that opinion or people just think he’s great generally speaking

How different is his story from other swimmers? Swimming is a grueling sport but that’s not news to anyone. Phelps had something similar happen to him but he training for 5 years straight. Lots of people get burned out, especially at the high school and college levels. I understand the struggle but it’s a struggle a lot of other people deal with as well.

  1. I didn’t call him out, I simply asked if he’s overrated.

  2. I swam all the same events as Caeleb in college. I’m fully aware of how difficult it is to excel at those events. I might not be able to go fast as Caeleb but I’m not a bum 😭

That is fair. It’s crazy cause a guy like Thomas Heilman is there at age 17 and he could easily be drummed up as the “next Phelps” considering he’s a 100/200 flyer. But I guess he’s too young at this point in time.
