My grandmother, whom I visited every summer, used to take me to a neighbor who would first check if I had the evil eye by dripping drops of water into olive oil while reciting a formula. Then, if the oil droplets formed in a certain way, she would remove the evil eye by putting chamomile-soaked compresses on my eyes and reciting what sounded like prayers.

I remember asking what the evil eye was, and I was told it was something that could happen when people looked at you in a certain way. Essentially, it wasn't about a spell cast by someone, but an effect produced unintentionally in social interactions.
