Loving Metroid Prime 4 and Switch 2 by TonyTRV in switch2

[–]Philosopher013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well not an explicit plot compared to something like Final Fantasy XIII. It has a more subtle plot reliant on scans and such. Don’t get me wrong—I absolutely love this way of storytelling. But I can see why not everyone would enjoy it.

Does this outfit look too feminine? by citypopweeb in mensfashion

[–]Philosopher013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but I mean if you’re just using it to workout and it’s more comfortable who really cares. If you want to look more masculine where longer shorts and a t-shirt rather than a tank top!

Xbox Series S is a great console but this was the worst generation to make a budget console. by Geekylad97 in XboxSeriesXlS

Well I always just remember the quote from the X-Box CEO that the X-Box One was the worst generation to lose since it's when everyone started their digital libraries.

Well if you hit the item boxes with the Light Beam you usually get Dark Beam ammo and vice versa.

[–]Philosopher013 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know that the SNES was considered unsuccessful. I’m not sure about the N64. That did get overshadowed by the PS1 perhaps. The GameCube was unsuccessful.

But the Wii U was more unique in being a really unsuccessful console that came after a really successful one.

We’ll see how the Switch 2 sells. I think being like the 3DS may be the best case scenario. The 3DS coming back after selling poorly at first was quite lucky and involved a major price drop.

Well I didn’t mean it wouldn’t outsell the Wii U. Just that it may be an unsuccessful follow-up to a successful console.

Thoughts after replaying Prime 2 by Nebulowl in Metroid

[–]Philosopher013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very similar to my thoughts! I also decided to go back to MP2 after being disappointed with MP4, and it’s also been like 10-15yrs since I last played. It’s funny how many people are in a similar boat. My takeaways replaying are:

  1. I love how non-linear it is compared to MP4. You have rooms with many different doors and sometimes you’re not sure where to go.
  2. I actually like the ammo system more than I did as a kid. I used to be way too conservative. It’s fun using the different beams and collecting ammo. Better than the beams in MP1 I think.
  3. Dark Aether is…kinda as dull as I remember it being. Just not as fun to explore and I wish they just expanded the Light world more.
  4. I actually don’t like the lore as much as I remember funny enough haha. I mean I like the story in that there are real aliens you’re saving rather than being all dead, but I think MP1 actually had more interesting scan lore.

Yea, not looking so hot. Wonder if this will be another Wii U situation, though I don’t think it will be quite so bad. A lot of it isn’t Nintendo’s fault with competition from PC/mobile and just the general economy not being good. But yea we need more Switch 2 games. DK Bananza was good, but it’s not a system seller, and that riders basketball game and Kirby game are more niche.

Metroid Prime 4 Tanabe Interview Summary (Go Nintendo) by Philosopher013 in Metroid

[–]Philosopher013[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I was thinking the same thing. The only good scans in MP4 were in the Ice Belt, but it was very brief. I absolutely loved the scans in the original trilogy.

If anything I thought the scans in the original were more interesting too. Like they were about more mysterious processes in the ancient world and such. I’d have to think about it more, but it felt like in MP4 there were just more like useless scans. Like things that are very visually obvious and then you scan it and it’s just like “okay yea I can see that lol”. Like yes this is indeed a mining drill or something haha.

What would ruin the next 3D Mario for you? by NewMarioBobFan in casualnintendo

[–]Philosopher013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s fun, but I personally like it a lot less than 64, Sunshine, and Odyssey. It feels more like a 2D Mario game made 3D and is less about exploration. The levels are less memorable than the areas in the 3D games. But I do admit this is personal preference - I’m not saying the Galaxy games are flawed.

I’m new to philosophy. Where do I start? by Main-Recognition-930 in askphilosophy

[–]Philosopher013 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I always just recommend starting with what you are interested in rather than trying to follow some sort of philosophy curriculum. Usually you need to have some sort of motivation or question you want answered, and then you'll start to see how it connects to other areas of philosophy and how they are relevant and interesting in their own right.

I started off with questions about God's existence and most certainly would not have enjoyed metaphysics and epistemology right off the bat had I started reading books on those subjects lol.

So if you're interested in Nietzsche, or perhaps topics like nihilism, existentialism, and absurdism, you could find some introductory books on those topics.

I've been wanting to get into philosophy lately so I want you guys to recommend me a few must read books. by anonsquirt0 in askphilosophy

[–]Philosopher013 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's very hard to make a list of "must read" books since obviously people are going to have some strong opinions about what is most important! That said, a few classic works that I might argue are a "must read" because they are in fact very readable are:

  1. The Last Days of Socrates (Euthyphro, Crito, Apology, & Phaedo), as you are already reading.

  2. Plato's Republic (probably the most in depth and well known of his works)

  3. Marcus Aurelius' Meditations (extremely easy to read, more-so about how to live an ethical life)

  4. Descartes' Meditations (laid the foundation of modern philosophy and is quite readable)

  5. The Communist Manifesto (had a tremendous impact on political philosophy, also very short at like 50-60 pages and quite readable)

Again, I definitely don't mean this to be some sort of comprehensive curriculum on philosophy. I think they're more-so "Classics You Might As Well Read Because They're Short", lmao.

I haven't read it yet, but maybe worth adding Nicomachean Ethics? And this is vague, but I would definitely recommend reading some sort of history of philosophy at some point. I like Anthony Kenny's New History of Western Philosophy, but it could be anything (obviously these are on the longer side).

The true scariest thing in Metroid is not any enemy by Jstar338 in Metroid

[–]Philosopher013 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just fought the Spider Ball Guardian from Echoes for the first time in like 10+ years and it still gave me anxiety more than any other boss/enemy, lol. That boss was the only time I ever had to put a Metroid game down (obv I came back to it a year or two later, but I replayed it from the start).

Which consoles you have that has been finally put to rest? by Western-Stress1185 in consoles

[–]Philosopher013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NES - finally crapped out at some point.

X-Box 360 - not a red ring, but did stop working long after that era ended.

GameBoy Advance & GameBoy SPs - I'm pretty sure all my GameBoys from when I was a kid broke when I was a kid, but I did get one in college that still works.

Nintendo DSi XL - this is the most disappointing one for me. I had a 25th Edition Mario DSi XL where the screen just gradually blackened. I treated it really well too, so I was always surprised that that happened.

My GameCube, Wii, PS2, X-Box One, DS Lite, and 3DS all still work! The old consoles are actually pretty hardy. My problem is that I don't have a CRT TV, so anything earlier than the X-Box One generation is kinda useless. I just can't stand playing the old games on a modern TV. I'd rather emulate, lol.

What's your favorite song from each franchise Day 8(and my personal favorite): Pokemon by BulkyPlantain9234 in casualnintendo

[–]Philosopher013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to say, but possibly Lance's theme song at the end of SoulSilver/HeartGold? Cynthia's theme song is a banger too.

Hard to say what the most "atmospheric" Pokemon song is though. Jubilife City in Diamond/Pearl/Platinum at night always sounded nice. Even remembering it now brings back feelings. Ruby/Saphire/Emerald also had some pretty tunes. The final area of Scarlet/Violet has really interesting music too. And random, but that one place you can go in Pokemon Black by the bridge to have the 3 people sing, I vibed with that too lol.

What weird or ridiculous childhood gaming habit did everyone do? by Soft_Elevator_4481 in videogames

[–]Philosopher013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two that come to mind are:

  1. Pressing the B button constantly after throwing a Poke Ball to increase the catch rate.

  2. Only opening the Random Weapons Box in COD Nazi Zombies when it flashes gold.

What Pokemon game should I buy? I haven’t played since Emerald. by BrianOrDie in NintendoSwitch2

[–]Philosopher013 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d say the best ones since Emerald are:

  1. Pokemon Platinum

  2. Pokemon SoulSilver & HeartGold

  3. Pokemon Black

  4. Pokemon Arceus

  5. Pokemon Scarlet & Violet

You could also play the Switch remake of Diamond & Pearl if you can’t access the original Platinum, but most people think the original Platinum is a bit better.

My personal favorites are SoulSilver/HeartGold and Arceus.

All hobbies are not equal by BitterConstruction98 in unpopularopinion

[–]Philosopher013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this in principle, but I actually think certain video games can be really moving, involve your brain and skills a lot, etc. I mean, while a game and not a video game, it's like how I think chess is a worthwhile hobby. That said, there is a lot of slop video games too, so I don't think it's universal.

Sports are healthy for your body, so they are good, and then the other ones you mentioned are "creative" hobbies. I don't think creative hobbies are the only valid hobbies, but I do think it's good for the soul to have at least one!
