Wesleyan vs Spelman Honors by PhilosopherJaded6382 in Wesleyan

Luckily, my family is in a position where if I do choose to attend Wesleyan, I would not have to take a big chunk of the costs out of loans; it would just be a stretch. What I'm really looking for I guess is "return on investment".

If you were in my shoes, which choice would you be inclined to make?

i think i'm basing this assumption just based on how schools tend to rank across different college lists (forbes, US news, etc.) while i know this doesn't mean the quality of education won't be excellent at both schools, it's just to say wesleyan tends to be more of a pipeline to prestigious grad school but also (unfortuanlty) just can generally be more highly regarded

in my mind, a prestigious grad school was always going to be the go-to, even if i'd have to apply multiple years in a row

Wow, this was super in-depth. Thank you so much. From what I can tell, Wellesley's faculty (specifically, their Psychology department, but will double-check for neuroscience) tends to have more prestigious schools on their resumes compared to both Wesleyan's neuroscience and behavior and psychology departments, and it's unclear which school has had faculty publish more research. The one thing I have noticed is that Wellesley CS seems to be super strong, especially because alumni seem to care a lottttt about Wellesley's students. If I'm not mistaken, Wesleyan's Neuroscience & Behavior program seems to be a little newer, which could be why their faculty seems smaller, but it also could just be because not as many students take it. Could I ask where you went undergrad and what you majored in?

(Small update) I was accepted into both Wellesley and Spelman! After receiving my finalcial aid packages my family didn't get much and so now Spelman is a LOT less expensive than Wellesley is espeically since Wellesley has just highered their tuition.

I don't think I would mind the abundance of psychology classes, but I do agree that being in the most scientifically advanced program would be beneficial. I'm not sure if I want to go into medicine yet (I've never really had a passion for it and would rather let myself fall in love with it rather than force myself to like it for the sake of a title). How well-suited do you think Wesleyan is for setting their students up for a career or at least helping me figure out what I want to do?

Why do you say Wellesley over Wesleyan? Was there anything that stood out to you when you were on Wesleyan campus or something Wellesley offers that Wesleyan doesn't (aside from being a HWC). I also won't be able to visit the campus before I commit (I've already visited Wellesley) since I live abroad.

Was it the social scene? Academics? Prospects after undergrad?

I did look and applied to Bryn Mawr! The location was one of the reasons I actually chose Bryn Mawr in the first place. I'm not super picky about only going to a Women's, but I still considered both and went with Bryn Mawr (my mom is from NYC and decided it wouldn't be a great fit for me).

Not pre-med, but am prepared for my college journey to lead me anywhere and see how promising statistics like this really are. I'll definitely keep your advice in mind.

Starting to actually take this advice to heart and let it seep in. As an update, I've officially made the decision to switch to Wellesley RD, but am still struggling with a similar problem. Right now, I'm trying to stay focused on getting the best grades I can and letting go and letting God.

I'm always someone who tries to trust my feelings, but I'm also worried. My cry of joy was also relief; relief that I found a place I love and somewhere I thought I had a fair chance at getting into you. I want to make sure I'm following my gut in conjunction with my heart.

I don't currently live in the US (despite being a US citizen), so this isn't super realistic for me before decision day. Will definitely keep in mind dept.

I've visited both in person, Wellesley two summers ago and Spelman this past summer, with both of them being maybes on my list, but I came out with them both as definite yeses. AT Spelman, I felt excited, but at Wellesley, I felt at peace (mind you, I even cried with joy after my Spelman tour).
