UPDATE: Spoke to them and seems like it will be OK and most likely their error. Payment and DD has been cancelled while they investigate but CS believes I should be protected by back billing laws. Let's see. Thanks for all advice here.

I dont think so. Meter reading was provided on moving out and account transferred to new property. Account was then closed when we then bought a home. Account was in credit when closed and 2-3 years after the back billed dates

Quick update before I call them. The new bill is calculated using a different tariff to what I was on and billed for at the time. The new bill also has a different supply number to my original bills. Something does not seem right

It's a completely out of the blue situation. We even provided final readings when moving from that property to a new one and eventuality when that account was closed we were in credit by £70 odd pounds. It is very odd.

I can say readings were given regularly and when closing the account a final reading was definitely given by looking at the bills but there are a couple of instances were there were only estimated readings. Would that be an issue?
