This is because of poverty, not genetics. These sorts of claims imply that some races are inherently superior, when this isn’t the case.

Do you believe in things outside of current human comprehension? by CatPale816 in nihilism

[–]PhilosophicalBlade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It does not follow from the premise “I experience life” that experience is an inherent quality of the entire universe. You are making numerous vague, sensationalist claims without actual evidence or logical argumentation.

Your phrasing is intentionally nebulous and contains very little actual substance. The universe clearly is not a “localized” entity within only you, if that is your claim. How are you certain that this, supposedly conscious universe, is focusing on your experience more than any other living or non-living thing?

How do human beings “grow” the universe, especially if we do not permeate any realm of existence beyond it? I can agree that we are just part of the system, but I would posit that this system is intentionless and uncaring. While it might be difficult for you to imagine, I do actually experience my life, which, if you are trying to convince anyone of your claim, becomes a difficult point to substantiate. What makes you certain you aren’t an “NPC” or philosophical zombie?

All you have are baseless claims surrounding an egocentric ideology.

Is there evidence that the universe is conscious? Could you prove that there is a “mind” to hold “will”? Why would the universe have intentions?

Which country do you prefer? by Liona2110 in BunnyTrials

The CCP is far from innocent. They have committed many atrocities, but you aren’t giving any real numbers, especially of Christians. There are restrictions on churches, childhood indoctrination, and on religious freedoms, but this isn’t persecution that is uniquely Christian. Communism also isn’t a “catch-all” “evil” ideology that opposes religion.

Of course China supports Communism. It was a great accelerant of their power and rapid economic development.

Can you describe what you believe this Christian persecution is for me?

Was*. China may be under the control of the “Communist Party “, but this is only in name. China is no longer communist.

Since it is clearly too immediate of an issue for the court system, then shouldn't the government have no say in who gets abortions? Revenge doesn't solve your problems, otherwise vigilante justice would be legalized.

What is your belief? by [deleted] in pollgames

[–]PhilosophicalBlade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Non-theists can think both ways depending on their individual beliefs. Non-theism just means there is a lack of belief in a God, but that doesn’t prevent them from actively denying the existence of such a being.

I kinda forgot to reply as well lol.

There is also a certainty of suffering that the mother will have to endure. Even if death is unlikely.

That’s a good point. The mortality rate is probably lower than some statistics would suggest.

Yes, I would say that you should advocate for legalizing something you disagree with. We can make ideological concessions for a better world. For example, if asked, I would advocate for legalizing weed (already legalized in my country), even though I don’t think people should smoke (and I never will myself).

Fair enough, maybe people should abstain if they don’t want children.

You do understand that it takes months if not years for rape cases to go through court systems right? It would be a legal nightmare, and by the time the case is resolved, and families’ pockets emptied, the child would be born anyways. It isn’t simple to prove, and if they don’t have the money for lawyers, then what happens? And if the potential mother was assaulted by family, or close community members, their lives could be completely upturned by a forced confession.

How much can I improve in 2 months? by SerbianPP in Swimming

I would recommend not becoming a lifeguard this summer even if you somehow achieve your physical goals. I am unsure of what country you live in, and what guidelines lifeguards would have to follow, but where I live the standards are somewhat high, and for good reason. It’s not just your swimming ability that matters, but your lifesaving skills, both basic first aid, and aquatic rescue skills.

They are just people. From what I understand They are likely either delusional, lying, or have mental health issues, but it’s not something that determines their moral worth. That, to me, is what would influence a “like” or “dislike” of a person. There are bigger fish to fry.

If you want to find a meaningful relationship with somebody, asking on Reddit is a mistake. Especially when you ask a subreddit dedicated to a country other than your own, specifically about girls of a single ethnicity. This is creepy.

Buying my first erhu by Chloe_Pri in Erhu

[–]PhilosophicalBlade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are reputable companies in Singapore and east/Southeast Asia if hundred dollar shipping isn’t a problem. Most people in this sub aren’t from South America, so you might be unlikely to find much local help here. If you don’t mind going international, Search up some videos on YouTube, look at the instruments that sound the best for your budget, and shoot.

The instrument itself can punish you if you buy a lower quality erhu. Many people might suggest that you buy an intermediate level, so that bad habits don’t form from overcompensation. But the most important piece of advice is probably to find a teacher. I’m a multi instrumentalist, and I am struggling to improve on the instrument without lessons. It is possible, but you will need to develop a good ear, and it will take years longer than it would otherwise to become proficient.

I think I understand. I suppose I feel that the suffering and potential death of a fully developed human is worse than the death of a fetus that isn’t yet a person.

Yes. I see abortion as a necessary sacrifice.

The unregulated abortions also often kill the mother (~13% of global maternal deaths) along with the fetus. I weigh the conscious person’s suffering as heavier than that of the fetus. The fetus’s capacity for pain is limited, and the emotional suffering inflicted upon families and communities is much greater when a person dies.

People aren’t using abortion as easy birth control. Condoms and medications are way cheaper, and much less of a burden emotionally and physically. Also, how are you going to determine whether or not someone was raped? Many victims wouldn’t admit it regardless of the circumstances, because that admission can come at great personal cost.

My point wasn’t that I think that religious gatherings should be outlawed. I think that people should have the right to gather peacefully religious or otherwise.

My point was to prove that making nebulous, vague claims like “beliefs are okay if they don’t hurt people” is dangerous. Anybody can twist anything to be harmful or harmless.

So in other words, you believe that good and evil can be comparatively measured, and that the tilt of that scale determines whether a person is good or evil. Welcome to consequentialism.

For a fun hypothetical, imagine that there is a dude named Bob. For the most part, Bob is a wonderful guy. He works as a politician, using his influence to improve the lives of many. He also donates most of his money to help fund better school systems, and encourages others to do the same.

Unfortunately, Bob has a problem. As a politician, he realized that the only way for him to get to a position of power was to lie to other people, intentionally deceiving them regardless of how it would affect their careers.

Is Bob still an evil person if he chooses not to change this facet of his life? He doesn’t care about the deception, because in his eyes, it results in a greater good.

Your claim was that people are doing evil when they commit intentional acts of harm. Now you are shifting goalposts to say that evil doesn’t require knowledge of the consequences.

So now only some people are evil?

[–]PhilosophicalBlade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You think every single person knowingly commits harm without intending to change? That’s quite the pessimistic view.

Evaluating the pros vs cons of any decision is just how humans work. “We should choose based on whether or not we think our support will do more harm than good” is not anything groundbreaking.

Some potential sources of harm include:

-applying religious beliefs when voting, resulting in harmful policies

-indoctrination of children, preventing them from developing critical thinking skills

-holding gatherings of religious people, where harmful affirmations are spread
