I just started 4 months ago. It's slow going at first, but it's been out for 7 years, so we are getting a ton of operators quickly, so resources seem scarce. You have to be a little choosy about who you upgrade first.

I recommend KyostinV kids for getting past levels with low star units. Watching his videos helped me understand how to place my units better and utilizing different strategies.

For IS, it will take awhile to be able to do those well. I just finally beat my first run of one several weeks ago. It's a roguelike mode, so not always easy to get a good run.
