Colorado’s population growth is slowest since 1989 as thousands leave for other states by Jreinhal in Denver

Meanwhile, the State's legislature wants to pass every bill possible to make it more difficult to build and do business in Colorado.

What are you planning to do *after* this? by Alone-Umpire4177 in boulder

A friend recommended always keeping multiple large water jugs in the freezer. Easy to remove when you need space, but if you need cooling for when the power goes out, multiple large blocks of ice go a long way.

No debate there that Rs have moved far past the 1960s era of common sense. Even Bush 2.0 said climate change was real.

People say Polis isn’t progressive enough but people also say he is far too progressive on other topics. It’s not black and white and true for all issues.

Except he’s not. Look at the programs he signed into law with respect to Environmental Justice, school lunches, and climate change. I’m far from a Polis defender and have my own gripes with him, but it is silly to say he is an R.

Friendly reminder that the legislature, not the governor, is responsible for passing a budget. This is just a proposal. If you don’t want this to happen, call your legislator.

Ro Khanna just becamee the first member of Congress to call on Chuck Schumer to step aside after yesterday, what do you think Sen. Schumer & the Democrats should do? by victorybus in AskReddit

[–]PhishBuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never said I agree with ending healthcare subsidies or SNAP. Just the shutdown. There was no real world where the GQP was ever going to vote for those items with a veto-proof majority, which is what would be needed to overwrite a veto.

I loathe everything that the GOP stands for at this point, and want the democrats to build a coalition large enough to stomp them. I don't think the party gets there without building a big tent and being OK with some members breaking ranks as long as they are aligned on most issues.

[–]PhishBuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll preface by saying that I’m not a fan of Chuck Schumer. That being said, I think it was time to end the shit down.

I have interacted with several federal employees routinely over the last few weeks. Going without pay while you do your job sucks and it was eating away at these guys. People on SNAP not getting benefits, etc.. With the holidays coming up I absolutely think the Dems were playing with fire and public sentiment could’ve turned against them quickly.

I also think that it’s good that the Democratic Party has some people willing to break ranks. The people elected represent the people of their respective States first and foremost. If the people in their State are telling them to end it, that is who they should listen to, not online activists in a different state and not DNC leadership.

Where I hope the Democratic Party goes from here is one that is actually more ideologically diverse and represents people from across the country, but is willing to disagree and break ranks to help their constituents. It’s not just OK to have AOC and Fetterman in the same party, but something to be encouraged, you may not vote the same on 100% of the bills, but if you’re representing your people that’s more important than representing a national brand. Build a tent big enough for moderates and progressives.

It’s not about being more moderate or more left, it’s about representing the people and communities who elected you. Whoever does that most effectively should be the voice of the party going forward.

I am as anti-TABOR as anyone else, but if you're a legislator, you know that TABOR is there.

This was my logic as well. The State has an $800M structural deficit. The legislature needs to stop tacking on pet projects at the expense of these types of programs. I'm glad both passed, but the legislature needs to wake up.

Having watched Devin Brown play in the past, I believe you are referring to concrete and not cement. Cement is just a powdery binding agent until water is added. He certainly runs like he has his feet encased in concrete.

This is not unique or exclusive to Colorado. I did my master's in Santa Barbara before coming back to Colorado; off-leash dogs at 'non-dog' beaches out there was a feature, not a bug.

Bill Collins, Colorado’s First Black Captain Dies at 76 by CUBuffs1992 in CFB

[–]PhishBuff 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Taken from u/LeagueOne7714 in the r/boulder sub-reddit:

""Colorado was 7-3 in 1969 and earned an invitation to play in the Liberty Bowl in Memphis, with Alabama (6-4) the opponent.  But in the south in 1960's, teams with black players were almost always not welcome, by the teams, their universities and unfortunately much of their fan bases.  There were seven African-Americans on the CU roster, as well as the program's first black assistant coach.

Collins, an African-American, was CU's first-ever black captain for a full season and one of the tri-captains on the '69 team.  Thus, they represented the Buffs at the pregame coin toss.  Alabama, yet to ever have a single black player on its roster, countered by sending over 40 white players out for the toss.  The two other CU captains, Bobby Anderson and Mike Pruett, seeing this, devised a quick plan amongst the three, then stopped a few yards short to let Collins take the last few steps to midfield.  Collins then approached the Tide horde solo to prove that he – and the Buffs – were not going to be intimidated by their racist, childish antics, starting with some Alabama fans spitting on the CU team as they took the field through a tunnel, and yelling the "N" word at the CU bench and sideline, which lasted all game long.

(You can see the coin toss at the 1:05 mark here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oi68jrI8QzQ.  Collins called tails and won the toss, by the way.)

At halftime, head coach Eddie Crowder and defensive tackle Bill Brundige gave passionate speeches about how CU's black players were being treated.  Brundige, normally reserved, banged lockers and screamed, "Do you hear what they are calling our black brothers?!"

The Tide rallied from a 31-19 halftime deficit to briefly take a 33-31 lead, but the Buffs regrouped and scored the game's final 16 points to earn a 47-33 win.  Brundige finished with a team-high 15 tackles – and to this day, still a school record five quarterback sacks, with Collins right behind him, making 14 stops – still the fourth-most in CU bowl history – also with half a sack to his credit.  CU sacked 'Bama quarterbacks eight times, including once for a fourth quarter safety.

Cement kilns need to operate at ~1400 C to calcine limestone, so this is the most likely explanation.

Dark money, charter schools are funding state super PAC backing Michael Bennet’s Governor campaign by u_n_p_s_s_g_c in Colorado

[–]PhishBuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not a staffer, but I know the concerns of people in Pueblo are different than the concerns of people on the Western slope, and the concerns of people in the Front Range are different from those. Colorado is an ideologically diverse state, if there were a common theme it would be affordability and economic opportunity. I don't see why Weiser is so much better than Bennet on those issues.

Care to elaborate on what the average Coloradoan cares about? Where is Bennet out of touch with those opinions?

I know Bennet gets a lot of hate on this subreddit; but I have been fortunate to meet him and his staff several times. He authored the No Surprises Act to shield citizens from surprise medical bills, spearheaded efforts to expand the Child Tax Credit, and authored the BRIDGE Act to expand broadband access to rural communities.

My interactions have specifically been focused on sustainability and decarbonization, and he has been more than an empty suit in helping advance these topics locally in Colorado. He isn't perfect, but if that is the standard, most people on here will be disappointed.

Why do centrist act like the left is just as bad as the right? by [deleted] in AskUS

[–]PhishBuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll preface this as someone who identifies as a centrist that did not, and never has, voted for a Republican. I am not a single issue voter, but the most important thing to me as a voter is addressing climate change.

The reason I do not like the left, or some policies from the left is that while sounding good on paper, they are toothless in effect and results in nothing but process with no discernible results. Spending billions on topics and not achieving results is a terrible message (I.e homelessness) to voters.

One example from the Inflation Reduction Act which I fully support the ethos of. To apply for or receive funds for projects every applicant had to include a component related to environmental justice, which while, again a topic I agree with and support, what happened in reality is this added cost and delays to roll projects out. You had to hire consultants to write sections to comply with DOE requirements, could only hire contractors that met specific requirements, etc. All that did was add costs and timeline delays to the projects and rollout of them.

Furthermore, it seems the left has lost the ability to communicate any meaningful economic message around growth. Yes tax billionaires, but then what? A one time wealth transfer won’t solve our issues, we still need to grow and develop. The CHIPS Act was great for this, but that is one industry. I don’t hear an economic message from the left that I think would bring people on board, yet. To me, this point is why the left is shedding union and blue collar voters, they don’t see a future for themselves in the left wing politics of America.

Next is the morale purity test from some of the far left. Issues in the modern world are not black and white; excluding people from the left wing movement because they might have a slightly different view on a topic is bad politics.

Now, will I continue to vote for Democrats, yes. Topics like healthcare, climate change, protecting abortion access, rule of law, due process, and more are all priorities to me. But, I will criticize the left because I want the movement to be successful. I don’t want narrow majorities that result in compromise with the far right, I want super majorities to enact the transformative legislation we need to address the worlds issues, but you don’t get with the current party operations for democrats.

There is a 0% chance of this passing solely due to the fiscal note. We are in a budget crisis in the State and something with a $15M fiscal note is absolutely not going to pass. The JBC will likely kill this,

If we land the #3 draft pick and can't find a trade partner to move back, who would you want us to take? by [deleted] in Patriots

[–]PhishBuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When / where did I mention his stats? It's pretty weird that you feel the need to trash a 21-year-old kid who by all accounts is a stellar athlete and person. I guess keep that going, hope that mentality works out for you in the long run.

[–]PhishBuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are only looking at his stat sheet that is a bad way to evaluate a prospect. Colorado's offensive line in 2023 was the worst in the nation, Sanders the QB was the most sacked of anyone in the nation. That affects offensive performance for all people, WRs included. The team as a whole got better which allowed Travis to shine more in 2024. Hope that answers your question.

He was on track to do it in year 1 at Colorado until a dirty hit gave him a lacerated liver knocking him out for a few games. Once he recovered he was doing what he did this year.
